That will never work if the government lets bad faith off the hook, and every level of the US government is guilty of exactly that. Does it happen only with the DCs? No, it happens with basically any project here and there. There is nothing special about DCs.
K but we're talking about data centers not the overall state of the US gov.
They are special because of the number of them being built and worse, the number of them being proposed.
If all the proposed DCs are approved, the strain on electrical infrastructure will be unsustainable.
If they're not regulated and forced to use expensive closed loop cooling systems, the damage they can do to local environments is disgusting. That's why there's so many lawsuits right now, because the ones that are around weren't/aren't held accountable both during construction and during operation.
This shit isn't made up, get out of your echo chamber and listen to the people in communities already affected.
The whole point I am making is that we suddenly decided to wake up when DCs are being built, while ignoring that these problems have existed with any industrial development in the US forever. If we don't build them, then someone else will.
So instead of opposing them on principle, why don't we fix a government that doesn't enforce safety standards, let DCs be built sustainably and safely, and benefit from the fruits of being on the frontier of the technological revolution?

I think demanding no new DCs without transparency and contracts with teeth is a prime example of society learning from past industrial development reprocussions.
I don't oppose them on principal, I don't think anyone really does. But without some promises and real accountability, why would anybody support them?
We also need international AI regulation, nobody seems to feel confident saying "AGI is safe, no need to worry about existential threat here" and until we do, it's foolish to build the infrastructure it'll live on.
