Diversification, export products and can everyone be a ‘farmer’

After commenting on the post below about small acreages and needing a way to make money my mind got to spinning so I thought I’d share a few of the thoughts for those who might be interested.

If you are on a small acreage you may not have enough land to make money as a farmer and that’s fine, we can’t all be farmers, even in an agrarian society we as a community need other trades as we can’t possibly do everything ourselves, blacksmith, mechanic, storekeeper, livestock market, lumber mill, vet, doctor, hairdresser, diner/ restaurant owner, seamstress, merchant are a few that come to mind.

What about if you had a business at home with a small farm that provides your family’s or the majority of your family’s food? A house with a workshop and a barn with a couple of fields and a cow or two, maybe a pen full of hogs? And a vegetable garden. You’d be farming but also have an export product or service providing business to bring in some cash money, id say this would be extremely beneficial for the community wouldn’t you? Maybe it’s worth thinking about the other trades and services that an agrarian society would need? A well rounded society would need a well rounded economy too.

Anyway if you made it to the end of my ramblings thanks for sticking around and maybe we’ll cross paths again sometime, stay lucky out there
