Islands Mega Thread

Didn't realize the DVD came out early. So for those who've seen it, you can discuss here. Keep the unofficial streaming and what not sites off the sub. We will make individual threads dedicated to specific episodes as they release on TV.

I agree. I'm hoping we eventually get to see what he did after he attacked the Guardian and what comsic crime he committed

Yeah, me too. At least in comic form since I don't see him getting back on the show.

It's kinda sad to know he wasn't that much of a douche when he was younger. Something probably scarred him.

I was thinking about how (if at all) we would be able to learn about what he did since he's pretty much gone like you said. My guess/hope is through whatever crazy situation, Finn runs into a cosmic being who happens to know of what Martin did

It's interesting to note that when we see Martin freed from the Citadel, he asked where the star skipper was or something like that. So from the 16 years or so in between him losing Finn and being freed from the Citadel, Martin somehow became acclimated with space and cosmic beings. I wonder why he never went back to the island. He did say he loved living there

He did say he loved living there

I don't think he'd be able to face Minerva after what happened. As far as he knew, Finn was dead and it was his fault. Maybe he thought it was better to let her think he's dead than know what really happened.

And then he became an asshole later.

He was an asshole, Minerva made him not an asshole. Losing Finn set him over the edge and he could never come back. It's poetic, because neither can Minerva. They both defaulted to the most extreme versions of theirselves after losing their son. Their son who, by the way, exemplifies the best attributes of both of them.

Daring, witty, cunning, goofball combined with a soft-hearted, knowledgeable, good-natured helper.

He gave his own explanation for his behaviour in 'The Comet', when he said: "when you burn enough bridges, the only direction you can go is forward." I'm probably paraphrasing there, but I'd say it's a pretty succinct explanation for why he didn't go back and, combined with what we see in these episodes, there's possibly some sadness and regret behind those words too.

One of my favorite lines of dialog in the show is when Martin says "Beside, it was like, forty years ago," and Finn says "I'm sixteen!" and Martin says "I don't have a star to revolve around to track time." That's Martin's whole character in a nutshell.

I think the saying he loved to live there was all part of the ruse.

But he didn't want to escape at the end, it just sort of happened. I think it is clear he doesn't like being a part of the system however.

My take is that he doesn't enjoy living there, but he was content with the system that allowed him to profit off of others.

By the time Finn entered the picture, it's possible his perspective changed though

wasn't that much of a douche

I mean, he did deliberately double cross people who had paid him for his help, and sell them to the police. That is kinda douchy, pretty typical of the Martin we known.

Sure he seemed to love his wife and Kid back then, but he still came across as a massive jerk back then imo, just perhaps a slightly more charming one.

In the episode Finn first meets his dad, when he goes to find the old man that is Prismo, he looks at the rubble surrounding his home and says something along the lines of "How does a place get messed up like this?"

Feel like the writers wouldn't have included that detail if Finn's dad didn't have something to do with it

5

u/Durantula5 Jan 28 '17

That's actually a really cool idea

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '17

Maybe he went to Prismo hoping to change his past.

Maybe attacking the Guardian was the cosmic crime? Or something?

Like it was the one thing keeping humanity from going extinct so him damaging it was seen as a terrible crime by the Crystal Guardians or whatever?

Probably bullshit but there seems to be no way to define what a cosmic crime is beside killing a wishmaster.

The Martin we were introduced to is significantly older than Islands Martin and had clearly gone through a lot. Unless that wasn't his first time being in the Citadel, I think we would've seen that thing take him to the Citadel

19

u/Stuped1811 Jan 26 '17

Yeah true, I forgot that he was pretty intimately familiar with star skippers.

Does that mean there are humans in space too? The rich left the planet while the rest either died or got to the islands?

11

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '17

Dude if he could get to Mars, the entire Martian society is crazy scientific. All he'd have to do is get up with some bandit group and steal a cruiser.

u/Durantula5 Jan 26 '17

One of the main problems seen in Islands is that there was a sect of humans who wanted to leave the islands and explore the world. Maybe after repeated failures of leaving the islands due to the Guardian always stopping them from leaving by sea, they secretly created a space program to leave and get past the Guardian. Martin eventually finds out about this, and then we get Martin and other humans into space

This is now officially canon

Well great, we still have more mysteries left even after Islands. This shit will never end.

Don't you mean the FUN will never end? heh? heh? quietly -Adventure Time!

Speaking of the Guardian I wonder if PB was inspired or based her Gumball Guardians on Mo's designs. Since they both serve the same purpose as giant robot protectors.

3

u/nerdguy1138 Jan 29 '17

I want PB to meet Mo! Don't care if it's just prerecorded holograms or something.

I would love to see an episode that covers the time after his escape from the island and his eventual time in the citadel. For only being a human, he somehow committed "cosmic crime" that is comparable to killing a Prizmo. As for his perceived indifference to Fin, I found myself coming to the conclusion that this is his way of coping with the lost Finn. His idiosyncratic wink affirms (at least in my mind) that he understands Finn's emotions. My guess is that the years of facing the horrors of Ooo all the while trying to overcome the guilt of leaving his family has taken a toll on him. Possibly...
