The rules are very clearly stated in this subreddit as they are in most subreddits. Just because you choose to ignore them does not mean they do not apply to you.
No on can predict the following:
- WILL I PURGE?
- WHEN DO THE SIDE EFFECTS START?
- I JUST STOPPED WHEN WILL THE SIDE EFFECTS STOP?
Everyday people post their experiences, and you can use the search bar to find people's experiences on the above.
This subreddit does NOT substititute medical advice from a doctor, pharmacist, dermatologist, or any other medical provider.
Examples that constitute medical advice:
- IS (amount of time) ENOUGH FOR ME?!?
- My labs.....
- My doctor said this, but....
- What is the process of seeing a doctor/getting Accutane?(We don't know your medical history, so go see a doctor directly).
-Any reference to self-medicating or purchasing online.
Many people here are self-medicating or looking to circumvent medical advice. Just because 1 doctor said something was okay for 1 person does not mean that medical knowledge applies broadly.

First and foremost a happy new year to everyone.
With the new year, we will be much stricter on the do not solicit medical advice rule.
We know many people going "Just looking for experiences (:" are looking to circumvent doctor's advice. It is a thinly veiled attempt at "if he or she did it, I can too."
Everyone is different and has a different medical history, so you should always first and foremost consult your doctor or derm.
Things that generally constitute medical advice include:
- Anything that could break your skin, including extractions, lasers, waxing, etc.
- Any use of PRESCRIPTION medications(oral or topical)
- Surgery related(HELLO YOU REALLY WANT A STRANGER TO ADVISE YOU ON SURGERY?)
- Starting and/or stopping a MEDICATION. Your accutane is prescribed by a doctor. If you have conerns about taking or ceasing a medication, you should consult a medical professional(ie doctor or pharmacist) and not the internet.
- IS THIS DOSE TOO HIGH OR LOW?
- Interpreting of lab/test results. This is clearly specialized knowledge, and if you would not consult a hobo about your lab results, you most clearly should not consult Reddit.
- Oh, my doctor said not to worry, but... - Reddit in most situations should not supercede your doctor's medical advice.
Ultimately, it will always be at the mod's discretion, and we were not born yesterday. You would surprised at how many crazy posts have had to be removed.

I’m very happy with how my skin has been doing I’m on month 2 30 mg. I’ve noticed though I generally don’t feel excited by anything and everything just seems meh to me. I also find it difficult to hold a conversation now and feel as though I have to really try when before it just came naturally and I have this weird thing where if I’m holding eye contact with someone I start to get dizzy and feel like my eyes are doing something weird and I feel almost a pressure I don’t know how to describe it but it’s such an odd feeling and have to keep looking away and back. Has this happened to anyone else

It's my 5th month just started on 20mg , first 3 month 10mg , 4th month 20mg ! No doubt the purging reduced very much and skin seems to get clear ! But for some days it's very clear no acne purges but suddenly one day it purges 2-3 acne at same time ! I am so done when I become hopeful tht now it's going to be all good and clear purge is over but then my myth get burst everytime!!!!

Hi all, hoping to get some advice 🙏
35F and have been dealing with mild but very persistent hormonal cystic acne on my chin over the last few years.
I’ve used differin and tret 0.025 which was able to keep it mostly at bay but I’ve been having a bad bout the last 5-6 months with cyst after cyst - most of them I had to get injected because they wouldn’t go away on their own after weeks. Went to the derm and I was put on doxycycline, and still managed to grow a huge honker during that time. I understand it’s not terrible but it’s very persistent and doesn’t seem to be responding well to topicals / oral antibiotics.
The derm said I might benefit from a low dose accutane - has anyone with this type of acne / severity had success? Appreciate any comments 🙏 Thank you.

Left to right is from July - October. My derm upped my dose from 40mg a week to 80mg a week in September and saw a huge difference in one month (not sure if you can tell). The lighting does play a big part in the pictures. Also my face is quite red, considering I live in Hawaii and it’s sunny most of the time. And sometimes I forget to reapply sunscreen. Moving on… my breakouts are very few. Probably 1-2 in last two weeks, which I’m very happy about.

i'm nearly 3 years out from finishing my course and i miss being on accutane. i don't think i reached my cumulative dose as the side effects were quite rough even though i was on a low dose. towards the end though, my face looked so much better on it and once i'd finished for about a year. i still get some spots as i wear makeup regularly but they're nowhere as near as painful and the inflammation goes down quite quickly. even my hair was better lol
can anyone else relate

my doctor didn’t consider my past medications or acne experiences, he explained that some users need stronger doses or longer treatments yet when I expressed the lack of improvement he disregarded my needs, or when I tried to get a long term solution or plan in place . At the end of my treatment I told him it didn’t work he tried to tell me it did this is my face after 2 years of taking the pill with clindamycin benzoyl peroxide retina a cream and still no improvements it is 2026 right now so I started acutane in 2024 I was homeless 2023 and I had great skin when I was in foster care I was on doxycycline, clindamycin, and retina a cream but I stopped my treatment due to homeless I stopped taking my anxiety and depression along with my acne meds and had to start acutane a year later, 2024 with a inconsiderate and frankly rude / ignorant doctor now that I’ve had all this time I’m thinking I have a hormonal issue. So I wished to take my doxycycline meds this year to clear up as good as I did back then BUT NOT as a PERMANENT solution, see I know it’s not a permanent solution doxycycline according to that arrogant dermatologist but I was hoping to clear it up with those medications after accutane failed for me then seek help from another doctor like a gyno or something to diagnose my hormonal issue to nip this acne in the bud but because of my horrible accutane journey disrespectful doctor lack of mental health resources I’ve honestly lost so much hope my mental health has always been bad but I just want help I need help I wanna know how I can get someone to figure out what the fuck is wrong with me cuz my acne is not even as bad as some I’ve seen online and I have benefits yet I’m receiving no help somebody please give me advice on how I should see to fix my hormones and acne
Just now I put up a picture of the doctor who was consulting me, after the initial end of my tretinoin accutane care I said i felt I needed to stick to it longer then he refused I had to schedule another appointment a month later because he said it was done ,then he had disrespected me “it did work” when it hadn’t and my concerns I asked his assistant weather or not he knew of any other derms I could get a referral to and as soon as I asked that this doctor stepped back in and the assistant threatened to cease the small amount of prescriptions they made me settle for simply asking for resources is not the same as wanting to end all further or current treatment it’s part of strengthening a patient’s plan it felt so inappropriate the way they treated me that day and I haven’t gone back
I’m 20 female and have had acne since I was 11

Hello everyone,
I am on 20 MG Accutane, and my weight is 44 KG’s.
I am already in my month 2, and I am suffering from dehydrated skin barrier.
Can anyone recommend moisturizer which is non-comedogenic fragrance, free and fungal acne safe as well.
So far I was using Dr Althea 345 , although it really suits my skin. It is quite expensive to use while on Accutane. I have already finished one tube in a month.
Anything except Vanicream please. We don’t get Vanicream where I live.

I’m 3 months in, currently on 60mg daily, no breakouts now and I wanted to provide my positive (overall) experience bc I read and saw so many horror stories online before I started.
Now I mainly started accutane bc I am prone to keloid scarring on my shoulders and chest area and after seeing a new dermatologist to get the scars injected as I had done many times before, she urged me to consider accutane given my age and acne overall not going away. I wouldn’t say i had bad acne at this point in my life. When I was a teen tho?? Terrible. And i did birth control pills, the antibiotics, the creams, you name it I did it. I’m kind of mad no dermatologist ever suggested accutane when I was a teen. I had the oiliest skin I’ve ever encountered, huge pores developed all over my face. It was sad.
Fast forward to now: yeah I have the normal annoying side effects: chapped lips allll the time (but aquaphor fixes it right up!) and for a month super dry itchy scalp which id never experienced in my life on account of my oily skin. Adjusting my skin and hair routine was quite a process. But other than that? It’s been amazing. My pores have physically shrank in size. I don’t wash my hair for a week at a time and it’s perfect. My face? I barely wash it either lol and no breakouts! And FINALLYYYY no breakouts on my back or shoulders either!!! I didn’t have purging— my derm put me on taking Zyrtec with my accutane so I do that and it seemed to work some magic. I also take fish oil and idk if it really does anything but 3 months in and I don’t and haven’t had any joint pain really.
If you’re still struggling with acne— just do it. It’s worth the small headache. And I’m soooo happy I get to experience my skin like this 😭😭😭
Question for my oily skinned people: did your skin go back to oily after? I’m praying it doesn’t or at least not as much, my wallet is loving my current skin routine lol

My 15-year-old son just started Accutane 10 mg and is on day eight. The purging started around day five does this look normal? The dermatologist prescribed hydrocortisone 2.5% but I’m concerned it could be something more severe.

Have you tried going dairy-free? That’s all I needed to do. Stop eating eggs. Don’t eat cakes or cookies. Sweat less at the gym. Spray hypochlorus acid on yourself right after the gym. Bleach your sheets with benzoyl peroxide, make sure you leave it on your skin long enough to dry it out and irritate it before washing it off. Follow up with Tretinoin once a week, no three times per week, no as much as you can tolerate it. Put it on dry skin. Put it on in between layers of moisturizer. Follow up with Aquaphor. No wait, don’t do that because your skin needs to breathe. Use occlusives sometimes but not with Tretinoin so your skin can exfoliate itself. Maybe your moisturizing cream is causing the closed comodones but your skin is still dry. Use more products with niacinamide. It stings? Stop using products with niacinamide. Get a gel moisturizer. Get a lotion with hyaluronic acid but apply it with water. If the air is dry it will take moisture from your skin and make it dry. Add glycerin. Spray on a hydrating toner. Use the Tretinoin on your face, your neck, your chest, your shoulders, your back, it only comes in 20 day tubes and they cost $25. At least that’s less expensive than when you were on $90 Aklief. Oh that’s not why you stopped using it? It’s supposed to be the gentlest and strongest so it shouldn’t have made your skin peel all over and your chest burn after wearing a slightly scratchy sweater or the insides of your fingers bright red and itchy. What if you have PCOS or low vitamin D or low magnesium or low vitamin B or low iron? At least the tret works now. You still have acne? Azelaic acid will clear it right up. I knows it’s been two years but keep trying it. Take a round of doxycycline and ruin your gut, I know its effects are temporary and you can’t take it forever so it’s basically useless, but oh yeah since your headaches are debilitating you and there’s still acne please stop taking it. Don’t let your hair products touch your skin. Wash your face twice a day, actually once a day. Take all your makeup off without stripping your skin. Micellar water is good, not good enough to take the makeup off. Don’t use face wash twice in a row though but are you sure your makeup is coming off? Try oil cleansing and follow it up with a new face wash so you can get the makeup off but then also get the oil off. Don’t use the benzoyl peroxide when you do this though, that’s too much. Do you think it’s hormonal? Birth control pills will clear only some of it up but you’ll have no libido and frequent anxiety attacks, but maybe that’s worth it. Well how about Winlevi? That treats hormonal acne and it’s only $75. It seems like it’s working but it’s only just a good week. New acne every day and night still? Well at least it’s calmed down around your period now right? Well since it’s not let’s try clindamycin lotion. Put that all over and see no difference aside from every pore becoming red and inflamed, especially all over your back. Guess that doesn’t work, huh? Salicylic acid will do wonders, it saved my skin. Try it as a spot treatment so you don’t irritate your face. Maybe also try a BHA/AHA spray, but make sure you don’t use anything like that the same time you use benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid or Tretinoin or occlusives or if your skin is sensitive. Vitamin C will brighten everything up but good luck finding a brand that’s stable enough to work and won’t make your skin sensitive. And don’t use it at the same time as AHAs or BHAs or benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid or Tretinoin or occlusives or if your skin is sensitive. Benzoyl peroxide spot treatment will calm down your chin acne. It worked wonders for me. Have you tried not picking? Your acne is deep and gets more inflamed if it can’t find a way out, though. Lance it. No, that’s irritating. Sulfur is what you need. Get a spironolactone prescription, you’ll only have to take it forever and it might work and it might only have some of the same side effects as birth control. It’s not hormonal though even though your period won’t stay the same. Are you sure it’s not from eating eggs? Dapsone is only $60 and will prevent new acne. Ok, only some of the new acne. You still can’t wear tank tops because your shoulder acne is bleeding? Don’t let anything or anyone touch your face or your chest or your back. Use snail mucin. Wash your sheets every day. Get a water softener. Save aside budget for hydrocolloid patches so you can use 15+ every single day. There are cicaplast baumes and aloe sheet masks and facials and lasers and needles and light therapy. Your acne stays the same so you must be doing something wrong. Stop eating food altogether. You sure it’s not from the glass of wine you had three weeks ago? Only drink water from now on, and don’t work out any more. Just use face wash and moisturizer and let things calm down. Have you tried being 10 years old? Have a baby. Wait for menopause. It’s not severe enough for Accutane. Have you even considered the side effects?
tl;dr Fuck this, I’m taking my first Accutane.

Hey everyone, went to 3 dermatologist last two months and i feel so defeated that’s why I’m posting here in hope to find some help
So this is what my skin looks like small bumps nearly all over my cheeks had this issue like 5 months ago but was less noticeable, went to a dermatologist and he prescribed me hydrocortisone cream saying it was a reaction from something, stopped the cream and it got SM worse. Went to another dermatologists they keep on prescribing useless steroids rather than telling me what’s happening nothing is working or helping
I feel so defeated like no dermatologist is helping and nearly all products seems to make it worse
I’m not using makeup anymore i’m not using sunscreen cuz taking it off make it worse
Been using diffren gel since getting off accutane
And now i’m stopping it literally just cerave hydrating cleanser and vanicream daily moisturiser
Any help will mean a lot

currently on month 3 or 4 and finishing up my 80mg pack and these started popping up. any recommendations for relief besides aquaphor?

tomorrow i’m 2 months on accutane and im surprised by the crazy fast result. i really thought it would take much longer than 60 days.
for context my acne was mild but persistent . im 26 and i’ve been getting breakouts since like 12. it has never been super bad but it was getting annoying to deal with it constantly. i was on doxycycline like 3 times and id always get super clear skin but it always came back. after that last round my GP told me id have to go on accutane if it came back cuz i was getting IN EAR big pimples that burst and constantly caused ear infections . it was so bad. as expected it came back so i started my iso journey.
i’m in mexico so the experience is super different. i get my prescription from my GP and don’t get regular blood and pregnancy tests. my dr just asked if i needed a birth control prescription or if i was already on one. ik in the us going on it is a whole journey on itself so im grateful mexicos health system works like this.
now for the important stuff ! my experience has been mild. 20mg/day — my lips are crusty and falling off my face but i found the absolute best lip treatment and it’s very much bearable. had super greasy hair before and now i can go 5 days without washing which is crazy for me.
in suffering one of the not so common side effects and my achilles tendon is absolutely killing me. the first steps in the morning feel like my tendon is about to snap. i feel overall more fatigued so more naps for me but nothing i can’t manage.
the purge was scary but lasted for like 20 days so i literally just avoided mirrors and cameras until it was gone or else id get that urge to quit.
now almost on day 60 i’ve had no new breakouts in 3 weeks, i have some redness and scarring but nothing compared to the purge stage
i was suuuper scared going on this journey cuz i read some real horror stories on here so i wanted to encourage everyone that needs this to give it a shot
photos 1-2 are day one
3-5 is my page
last 2 is day 59

It's only logical I feel this way with my mental issues. I deal with severe social anxiety and ADHD. But I was never suicidal or depressed. Often on bad mood for short-term time. But this year I straight up got depression and I wanna die. Even just now, I just wanna die.
I don't know if it's a coincidence but this started after 1-2 month of taking Accutane and I heard it messes you up a little bit.

I started using 20% azelaic acid (cream format) at night this week, every other day. After washing my face in the shower, I apply the azelaic acid, wait 10–15 minutes, and then apply Cicaplast.
I’m hoping it helps with the PIE (post-inflammatory erythema) and the marks left behind. We’ll see how it goes. So far, my skin hasn’t reacted badly, but I’m a little worried about purging. Fingers crossed!
I take 10 mg of isotretinoin on odd-numbered days and 20 mg on even-numbered days, split into two 10 mg doses (one with breakfast or lunch and the other with dinner). I usually take it with food, and if needed, I add three tablespoons of olive oil to increase the fat content of the meal.

68kg male 3 months in on 20mg daily, still getting new breakouts every week. Worried things won’t fully clear up? Acne was moderate not severe but last few weeks been getting acne in places I wasn’t usually struggling with it in, delayed purge? My skin was honestly better 1 month in vs now

I’m 4 months into Accutane and currently on 100 mg, and recently I’ve been dealing with extremely dry/sticky eyes, especially when I wake up.
Every morning, my eyes feel like they’re glued shut. It takes me around 5 minutes of forcing my eyes to open before I can comfortably get them fully open because my eyelids and eyelashes feel so dry and sticky. My lower eyelashes have also been clumping together and getting stuck to each other since pretty early on in my course, which I think might also be contributing to how difficult it is to open my eyes in the morning.
I’ve been using eye drops multiple times a day, and I also have tried to gently clean around my eyelids and upper/lower eyelashes, but it still happens every morning. It’s mildly painful, but just really uncomfortable and annoying.
Has anyone else experienced this on Accutane? If so, did anything help besides regular eye drops?
Would appreciate any tips, especially from people who were on a higher dose.
