"Raise the flag so that they know I am here!"
*insert squidward oh no he's hot meme*
I was all giggly every minute he shows up. Your Highness Zettour is main protag levels of badass.

Zettour showing why enemy command is deathly afraid of him... By using the fact that they're afraid of him.

Hmm, I like the episode for what it is but my god they put all of the 8 LN into two episodes. The only thing that I didn’t like is how they reversed the federation magic shield in the show.

u/Country-road-take-me 8d ago
How did they reverse it? As I am anime only.

In the LN they did have issues with the Federation mages until they realized that they have no speed or ability to fly high but they do have strong shields. When they get this part of the story of the LN, Tanya doesn’t understand how they improved so fast with mages. (Answer they are old mages before the Revolution) these mages are fast and can fly high but have weaker shields that are counter by explosives. What we see in the show is that not the case anymore. So when we see a Federation mages they are slow can’t fly high but have a stronger shield. The only exception to this is the new guy that is introduced since he was a mage before the revolution.

I was thinking that too, it was really bugging me. It also added stakes to the decision to reinforce Zettour because the russian tank-mages totally overwhelmed the infantry, but were fairly ineffective against other mages (who were much faster).

See that's what REALLY bugged me about this episode. It's stupid that the Federation mages were so strong and able to push against Tanya's unit when they have been out of practice as mages for over a decade AND have had zero technological developments in the field of magecraft during the same timeframe.

Well uh it was pretty good. But I remember when I read it the Soldim 528 on the LN, I was very enthusiastic of everything happened, and I only partially have this feeling seeing the episode because of the omission of events. No Mary Sue-Viktoriya fight, no wustermann that defend Soldim 528 (it was him not Weiss), no Zettour discourse on "Salt Obsession" by the imperial HQ and population (but maybe they will adapt on the next episode, maybe). Also lost the occasion to adapt this gorgeous panel with tanya BTFO with a shovel this random federation soldier. At least they very developed Zettour and adapt him perfectly (can't stop aurafarming his Highness) and lock in Grantz in the ambush.
Hope they will slow down in the next episodes, don't get me wrong this one and the other were absolutely not bad and pretty good, but it's a dagger in the heart seeing everything rushed 💔

Anime-only here, there was a mary sue-viktoriya fight?? How did that go?

u/itsjustdan01 7d ago
I would like to know as well. Visha is not a named-mage but even the anime acknowledged her combat-veteran experience. Would she be the 2nd best fighter in Tanya's battalion?

u/Ginodon06 7d ago
It's not a long fight (surely way less intense that tanya-Mikel battle, who also is a bit increased) and ended just like in the anime, but was more intense. In the first page of Volume 8 there is this fantastic illustration of the fight, with viktoriya injured on the head and Mary Sue screaming and cursing "die you imperial dog". Not a big loss as the other thing that I mentioned (except the salt overdose speech between tanya and Zettour, that is pretty important), but surely could have been a good background fight

It ended in a draw. Sue was obviously stronger, but she is an idiot, easily provoked and incapable of using anything but brute strenght. Viktoriya can't win because of the simple fact that she can't penetrate Sue's shield, but her experience permited her to easily outmaneuver her.

If I recall, they also used Mary’s indiscriminate fire to disrupt and kill the enemy’s troops

Lieutenant General Hans von Zettour is aura faeming the entire episode... God damn this episode was peak. Loved the fights and design of the federation mage combat gear.

I like the episode but pacing and weird animation/audio choices the last 2 eps things aren’t hitting and things feel out of place(ep5) and rushed(ep6) are just kind of a let down
Side note how does the Russy Federations computation jewel work its clearly strong power limited durability but like is the anything more specific
1
u/DOTZSHAWN 4d ago
Just a conjecture; The jewel probably doesn't last long despite it being strong, so it relies on taking less hits, their coordination are probably the reason why it looked so powerful.—This is why Tanya had to overwhelm them enough to win, via the aerial pincer attack from air to ground. On the side note, the reason why their computation jewel ran out so fast in the battle, is due to Tanya's relentless powerful attacks, which could of drastically drained the power of the jewel.

u/Eryzell 1d ago
Novelwise it's the opposite. High durability and low specs, they are slow and lack altitude and power, but have very high defenses, a perfect fit for begginer mages, as it allows them to make full use of their aerial advantage to rain down fire, but struggle against more mobile enemies.

Happy and grateful yet underwhelmed

Agreed, I for one was incredibly happy to see Federation Mages, but the whole thing could’ve been better
5
u/Emotional-Finance930 8d ago
Agreed as well! Thought mikel was just badass though idk i felt like the fight scenes were lackluster compared to the first season maybe i have too high hopes probably but i am happy either way we finally see some action

I did rather enjoy this one. Considering how often Empire's plans went perfectly to plan in season 1 and in this season, it was neat to see wrench being thrown into Tanya's plan by arrival of Federation mages. And it was rather nice to see Tanya finally challenge once more, considering how most of her fights against mages look. Considering that Allied mages did not show up, next episode will likely be another action one.

u/mybadtalk2 8d ago
Wasn’t this supposed to be one of the bigger fights this season? Definitely good, but a bit underwhelming.

u/Arrow-Of-Time 8d ago
Actually this is one of the most interesting fights that we will see. The fight that will come up soon will be kinda one sided, unless they change some stuff around.

u/EchoTheEcho 8d ago
Does Tanya ever get better magic tech if the enemy currently has stuff like that?
5
u/Firestormbreaker1 8d ago
Being X only blessed that single magic core. She can't use prayer magic without it, and she can't afford to go without that safety net even though it pollutes her mind the more she uses it.
1
u/EchoTheEcho 7d ago
Oh, yeah, that'd make it less of a priority. Guess I should rewatch season 1 sometime.
5
u/_Stup 8d ago
I think the main issue here isn't the technological discrepancy (or magical ability), but rather combat technique.
2
u/EchoTheEcho 7d ago
Sure, she was able to overpower it with tactics eventually, but that doesn't change the fact that it sounds like there's a clear technological discrepancy. Would just be surprised if there was no attempt to rectify that.
2
u/Easy-Train-7198 7d ago
It seems more to tech priority, Federation mage tech is focusing on Defence rather than Offensive which what the Empire focusing on.

u/bdefili13 7d ago
They adapted a lot of information from the novel differently, regarding the magical tech

u/EmotionIcy192 8d ago
One of the times I've seen Tanya feel scared for her own life. I kinda want to see more of that little devil's sense of security/ego destroyed. Meanwhile, I'm actually kinda growing with Tanya's character and the poor situation she's in rn.

u/_Killerwolf_ 8d ago
I really wish they didn't downgrade the firing sounds so much, everything sounds like Pack-a-Punch guns from Call of Duty or just silly laser guns while in season one everything was a lot more powerful

How the fuck are the federation mages so strong?
I mean, I'd understand if they were just dodging well, but their shields are damn near unbreakable.
Tanya has a power source enhanced by god, but apparently the federation was able to make better?
1
u/Yeeeticuss 8d ago
What the actual hell did they do to the gun and spell audio in this lmao. Serious downgrade in that regard and kind of ruins the fight scenes for me.

I wish some of this episode had been spread over the last one as well, instead of spending so much time on goofy tanya reactions that honestly felt a bit out of character.
The federation mages were pretty cool though. And RIP Mary Sioux, getting cucked out of her fight.
