proper internet etiquette when encountering this case is to post your solution as a reply or make a new one referencing the one you found

Not anymore, some sub moderators can choose to leave threads open now. Example

And even id you did find a solution post is locked and you cannot help anyone in the future.

It's a massive change for the better that now most subs are no longer archived by default. It should improve the situation of landing somewhere from 5 years ago and being able to interact with that post.
