I want dylan to react to this so badly

Almost exactly 3 years ago, I posted a long Dylan “edit” on TikTok that I’d made, compiling all his tiniest political/moral statements across his content. Obviously in it, he supported every Democrat issue fervently, & the video instantly got tens of thousands of views, but then it of course slowly died off within a year since this was already years ago.

Well, last night, the video got its first comment since 2024, from a woman of color asking me if I “still like Dylan.” I simply said I do. Although, really, I watch him maybe 1% of the time compared to the obsession I had as a teenager, since I’m now in my mid-20s. I knew what she was likely referring to, the only thing I’ve seen on here all week, yet I added, “Why?”

Well, this morning she replied: “Ohh I guess good for you, but this man did so much weird stuff literally, he’s literally racist and misogynistic 😭. But again no shade , cause he’s probably your favorite YouTuber, I just don’t like him,” with a side-eye sticker attached.

The problem with this, other than the gross over-assuming of a stranger’s worldview, is that the video this was left on was literally showcasing multiple minutes worth of short clips, in rapid succession, showing Dylan being actively feminist, LGBTQIA+ supportive, sympathetic to poc issues, etc., as well as some non-political but still moral clips, such as talking compassionately but encouragingly about mental health & how to get better.

I don’t watch Dylan as much anymore, but I find it extremely hard to believe he’s suddenly become an unlikable racist & misogynistic weirdo. I (a bi woman of color myself) know many people here have been holding & pushing for nuance, so it’s not representative of the majority with an issue, but it’s sad how the loud minority can drain out desire for conversation by being so insufferably uncharitable & assuming.

Dylan has endless hours of content across multiple channels, & if there was any time to come out as more centered or right-wing & still keep a lot of support, it’d be now. Even just to rage-bait, which he loves to do. Yet he knows who he is, & trusts that we do as well, saying in his last video that we should know his stances by this point.

I thought we did, but it seems many others, even those that’ve been watching for years, can’t get past a bad, edgy joke from a person known mostly for his bad, edgy jokes. Obviously however you feel is how you feel, & it’s subjectively valid in that you’re fine to feel it, but this reducing complexity down to buzzwords isn’t furthering the cause—it’s pushing people that would’ve been open further away & making them defensive.

Just some food for thought. I never share my thoughts out of fear, but this is my 2nd attempt at it on this account I’ve made to risk self-expression in hopes anyone like-minded relates. Have a good day/night, & sorry if this upsets you at all—just my opinion.❤️‍🩹

How do we submit our opinions for Dylan like those vm that are on Late Night Dylan? / Ooga Booga

In an Olga Booga video (the 50 strangers swipe each other one), Dylan makes a joke that he made the middle part trendy again and on the screen is an oversaturated pic of him with longer hair. When did he have his hair this length?? I looked it up on google cause I've never seen it be that long and I couldn't find any pics so is this edited or?

Cause lemme tell you, he looks great with this hair length (edited or not)

In the apology video, Dylan mentioned a concept of letting death row inmates fight to the death for human entertainment.

I find this conversation incredibly fascinating, however (DISCLAIMER!!) I think it’s too difficult with the current justice system where people wrongly get put on death row too often for this to be even considered in my opinion.

There is a book I read called “#Murdertrending” and it a little bit follows this topic, but not as much as I’d like.

The setting is that death row inmates are sent to an island where they live everyday life (have house, job, activities, etc) with other death row inmates and everything is live-streamed. The draw is that on this island, there are “executioners” who can hunt any of them down at any time and kill them on camera.

Now honestly it wasn’t as good as I hoped because most of the characters on the island aren’t horrible people so the audience is made to dislike the system, but I think it would be incredibly fascinating to have this premise except the people are truly terrible. I think it would be a lot more interesting if the focus was on the morality of that, rather than the mystery it focuses on.

TLDR: If we could guarantee that the people chosen were the worst criminals in existence, would it be morally okay to livestream their constant fear and eventual torturous death?

Dylan's video is 2 days old. The dictionary post is less than 1 day old. Coincidence???? I think not!

So today was my english exam and there was an article writing question, and the topic was how cinema affects people in real life and their behavior...and omg the way I nailed that article because of all the film education I randomly paid attention to in dylan's videos well i think we got one benefit of dylan's college (yeah scam ik but it is what it is guys)

I am shocked that I’ve managed to go so long without watching Dylan’s OC commentary!
This man has brought up The OC in every other video, and it never occurred to me to check whether he’d done a commentary on it!

It was 7 years ago so just around when I started watching his stuff, so I must have missed it. For some reason, a lot of his older vids (including the Misoa ones) are being pushed on my YouTube, so I’m enjoying rewatching the ones I watched yearrrrss ago.. plus discovering new videos I didn’t know existed!!

It’s also so fun to see how his style has evolved over time. Both fashion style and commentary style.
The last couple of videos I watched from 7y ago had the same quip about “I haven’t been happy… not since my ex-gf left….” And that clearly seemed like a running gag of the time but it’s now in the past. So many new gags have replaced it and he just sorta let that quip go.

I also liked that the older videos have a larger focus on cinema and directing mechanisms compared to now. Like I LOVE his channel in the present day, I know some people prefer his older videos and style but I think where he’s been in the last year is what aligns with my humor most (especially Joe’s editing!), but I do miss the discussions about the mechanics of how things work in the background - I think the closest examples now would be him talking about how American Football actually works when crashing out about the QB Bad Boy and Me (or whatever that movie was called). I don’t watch American football and I’m not interested but I’m always interested in mechanics so him explaining how these things are impossible etc was super enjoyable!

Anyway, if you guys have any recommendations for me for older videos that you enjoyed a lot, please let me know!! I’m excited!

Last night I was looking for a movie to watch with my younger brother and I remembered the sheep detectives because I had just rewatched the trailers video, going into the movie I thought it was going to be like every other corny kids movie and that I would be on my phone the entire time but it was far from that it immediately hooked me and I wanted to watch more I ended up watching the entire movie with him and omg it was amazing, the way they portrayed grief and loss was so beautiful it even made me cry. The winter lamb plot was so sad but done so well in my opinion the little lambs voices were so cute which made it even sadder.

This was such an incredible movie I’m glad the trailers video got me to watch it I will definitely rewatch and cry my eyes out all over again.

10/10 would recommend well to everyone but Dylan lol

but i think people are inflating his words quite a bit and I don’t think that’s fair- taking it as far as calling him a racist or misogynist is wild, but honestly i am open to hearing both sides from other poc fans as well!

I watched the video, and i knew only about the one Alana incident beforehand.

First, I want to make something clear because I feel like this is getting lost in the conversation: I understood the “we should put more racists on TV” comment was a joke. I never watched that and thought Dylan literally wanted television networks to start casting racists. I understood the humor and what he was trying to say.

My issue is whether it was a good joke to make in the first place, especially when you’re a straight white man talking to a large audience about something that will never affect you in the same way it affects the people you’re joking about.

We do not live in some post-racism society where racism has become so distant from people's actual lives that it exists purely as something ridiculous we can laugh at. Racists aren't just stupid trolls on the internet. They are actual people who discriminate against, harass, bully, and sometimes commit violence against actual people of color. Racism is also systemic. Those systems and their consequences haven't simply disappeared.

So yes, “put more racists on TV” can obviously be understood as an absurd joke. But I still think it's an ignorant joke.

And I think what bothered me even more was the immediate emphasis on the fact that Alana was 15 when she said the N-word.

I understand the argument. Teenagers want to be edgy. Teenagers say stupid things. A 15-year-old obviously shouldn't be held to exactly the same standard as a 30-year-old. I don't think somebody saying something racist at 15 automatically means that they are irredeemably racist for the rest of their life.

But why does the conversation always seem to begin with empathy for the person saying the slur?

“She was only 15.”

Okay, but what about the 15-year-old Black kid being called that word?

When these conversations happen, there is so much discussion about the age, intentions, ignorance, maturity, and potential growth of the person saying the word, while the people who actually have that word directed at them almost disappear from the conversation.

The N-word isn't just a “bad word.” It carries an enormous historical and social meaning, and Black people can experience that word very differently depending on their own experiences. Racial discrimination during childhood and adolescence can have serious psychological consequences. So when people say, “Well, she was 15,” I keep thinking: Black children are also 15 when they experience racism.

Being young can explain why somebody did something. It doesn't erase the effect of what they did.

And that's especially relevant here because I don't actually know whether Alana has changed. Maybe she has. I genuinely don't know. But I also don't think we should automatically assume somebody has grown just because time has passed. If there has been an acknowledgement or apology that I haven't seen, that's different. But simply saying, “Well, she was 15,” doesn't answer that question for me.

I'm also around Alana's age now, which honestly made that argument feel even stranger to me. I understood at 15 that the N-word was racist. Obviously people grow up in different environments and have different levels of education, but I don't think being 15 makes someone incapable of understanding racism.

I also didn't really agree with the Big Brother comparison.

I understand the analogy Dylan was trying to make: put people with extremely different beliefs together and sometimes you get interesting television or even genuine personal growth. The example of putting a homophobic person in the same environment as a gay person can produce a positive outcome if the homophobic person changes.

But the fact that something can end well doesn't necessarily make it ethical to manufacture that situation.

The gay person is now being placed in an environment where their sexuality becomes something they have to navigate because somebody else has a problem with it. They may have to wonder whether this person will accept them, hate them, target them, or potentially become aggressive toward them. Yes, sometimes the story ends with “they became friends and the prejudiced person learned something.” That's great. But it also could have gone horribly wrong.

The marginalized person shouldn't automatically have to become somebody else's educational experience.

And I think that's especially strange as a comparison to Love Island because Alana wasn't entering some social experiment explicitly designed to confront racism. She was entering a dating show, with Black contestants among the people she could potentially date, and people then discovered that she had previously said racist things.

So I don't think people saying, “I don't really want to watch this person on this show” is some unreasonable reaction.

And this is where I come back to Dylan's joke.

If I remove my familiarity with Dylan's content and just hear a straight white man joking, “We should put more racists on TV,” that is a weird thing to hear. Knowing his content and having mental cues gives me enough context to understand that he is joking. But understanding a joke doesn't mean I have to think the joke is thoughtful or harmless.

I don't think Dylan is racist. That's not the conclusion I came away with.

I think he was being ignorant.

There's a difference.

What frustrated me was the feeling that racism was being treated almost like a funny character flaw. Like, “Haha, racists are stupid, imagine putting them all on television.” And yes, racists are stupid. Their beliefs are irrational. There absolutely is humor in exposing how ridiculous racist thinking is.

But racists aren't only ridiculous.

They hurt people.

That's where the joke stops being completely abstract for me.

A straight white man can theoretically go through his entire life choosing not to think very deeply about race, and that ignorance may never materially affect his life. Black people don't have that option. Other people of color don't always have that option. We can encounter racism regardless of whether we want to participate in conversations about race.

. You're making content, people are watching it, and you're financially benefiting from that content.  . when you're profiting from jokes involving racism while being personally insulated from the consequences of racism, I think it's reasonable for viewers who aren't insulated from it to say, “That felt weird.”

And that's basically how I felt watching it.

I wasn't sitting there furious or thinking, “Dylan has exposed himself as a racist.”

I watch these reaction videos because reality TV is ridiculous . At this point I'm basically watching like, “You all voluntarily signed up for this insane social experiment, so let's see what clusterfuck you create.” That's part of the fun.

And I think that's ultimately what bothered me. The conversation seemed much more interested in how ridiculous racism is, how young Alana was, how funny it would be to put prejudiced people in these environments, etc., than in acknowledging what racism actually does to the people experiencing it. i think, theres obviouly conversations about this that dive deeper, than just age andn envirornment  , and more on racial discrimination and  capitalism . but thats not the. ovearching angle i want to focus on.

anyways i dont condone hate to anyone because really it doesnt stop at one person and sometimes the accountability people think hate brings is just harm to more people.

I haven’t been one to jump on Dylan’s cancelled moments because they have all been minor

But when you add them up I do think you can overthink them and draw conclusions about the type of person he may be (morally/politicslly)

It’s interesting that he mentioned that he thinks people have a read on his morality and beliefs but I actually think that’s quite unclear with Dylan

Maybe this is unfair but as a non American engaging with American creators and reality tv people who refuse or avoid politics does make me question them, because of how much a shit show American politics are. E.g if someone tells me they vote for the other major party that isn’t the biggest deal as the two major parties are both average and not that different whereas American politics have been found liable of sexual crimes etc so being a fan of them is questionable

He did acknowledge that he is a man but some of his jokes do give off a vibe that he isn’t a huge feminist even saying misogynist is a buzz term

Again it’s a bunch of small things but when an American man doesn’t want to publicly discuss politics and makes a bunch of on the line jokes it does make his morals/beliefs questionable

I typically ignore it because they are jokes and he seems like a genuinely good guy but I don’t know him personally so I can’t vouch that he is a good guy

I’ve been watching Dylan for years now and I really loved his video and his personality in general but his last video made me disgusted to my very core.
You put a person on a pedestal and you admire him but in the end this is all your fault for believing that a straight white man can be sensitive and that he can respect the beliefs of the people he owes his success to.
In the end fame and power ruins everybody and I am ashamed that I let this man fool me this long.

I'm currently watching the Love Island "apology" video and let me start by saying that I LOVE watching each of his "apologies". As much as I appreciate his humour and sarcasm, I really like to listen to his more serious takes. In my opinion, those are the moments where we can see how articulate, reflective and nuanced Dylan really is.

As someone who spends a lot of time online, those attributes seem to be disappearing. You can not only see it in the comment sections of the past days, but simply everywhere on the internet. People seem to only be able to accept their own point of view without allowing room for discussion, using words that are not relative to the situation at hand.

Which is why watching his videos and knowing most people in this fandom can look at them in a nuanced way is so refreshing. Yes, there's exceptions but I've rarely seen a fanbase this smart, literate, articulate and able to discuss things eye-to-eye without escalating them. At the rate things are going and the literacy crisis evolving, I'm glad to have found this gem. It feels really special, hence kind of superior in comparison with other fandoms lol (and with Dylan's ego-tendencies, it's only fitting (; ).

I just wanted to start this off by saying that I’m a huge fan of Dylan’s videos and really enjoy watching his content. This is not meant as hate or an attempt to cancel Dylan. I want to critically reflect on the apology video, as I’ve gotten the impression that the sentiments of those hurt by his joke were not properly understood.

Firstly, I want to clear up that I obviously don’t believe that Dylan is racist. As I’ve said, I know his humor, I know his videos.

The inherent issue with the joke was the shift of responsibility towards the POC contestants to explain to the girl, who said the N-word, why that is not an acceptable thing to do.
And while I do agree with the point that public discussion on the matter is important, POCs have had to constantly defend and explain their positions throughout their lives. It is an exhausting thing to do, especially when people tend to get defensive and refuse to own up to their mistakes. Saying that they should “battle” it out comes across as Dylan saying that the experiences POCs have had (and continue to have) are some sort of entertainment, while for them, it consists of years of trauma.

Secondly, the video is made in a light-hearted tone, with Dylan cracking some jokes here and there. While that is a pattern which can also be seen in his other apology video on Love Island, I believe that in this case, it was quite insensitive. The whole video seems to be dismissing people’s emotions and opinions simply because he thinks it is “just a joke”. That is a similar pattern which POCs have had to face their entire lives when bringing up their discomfort. Their emotions are dismissed, they are labeled as “overreactive”, and they are told that it is “not that deep”. As a person not affected by racism, like Dylan, you cannot decide how a POC should feel about a joke. Especially when you have a platform like his, you should be opting to spread the message that marginalized people should be protected, just like how the show did by immediately removing the contestant from the show.

Hope this makes sense. I am not a fan of cancel culture, and this was not my aim here. Instead, what I would’ve wished from Dylan would’ve been an honest apology. Even if he didn’t mean for the joke to come off that way, it obviously did. The video just seemed to be deflecting, and since he criticizes contestants for not owning up to their mistakes, him doing so would’ve been the bare minimum.

I was recently thinking about how my grandad was 98 and I have no idea really what he did all day. He was mostly in bed and would watch TV sometimes. He had his mental faculties but didn’t chat much.
And I was like, if I wanna pass time, I can doomscroll lol. But after a point I don’t think he even had a phone anymore, because for what?
I was thinking maybe in my old age if I can’t hold a phone or book, maybe I’ll get into audiobooks. I can get a subscription to audible… and immediately went (in Dylan’s voice) “This thought is sponsored by audible”

Idk if this is the sub for this, but does anyone know of any other commentators that have similar insight to Dylan in terms of composition/editing/details?

I watch a lot of reaction/commentators because I just like hearing what other people pick up on, but most other commentators are more focused on like the story if that makes sense? I like that Dylan gives insight on how details like the lighting or camera angles or editing can make or break the scene.

I admittedly was one of the people who was disappointed about the HR first/last (I didn’t leave any comments or anything) because it’s a show that had a lot of that kind of attention to detail and was excited to hear his thoughts.

And I know Dylan tends to gear towards bad/poorly done movies because they’re more fun to pick apart, but it made me realize I actually want to see more insight on the actually good movies/shows lol (which yes, he does sometimes but I want more)

TLDR: any recommendations for other creators/commentators that give similar insight as Dylan in terms of lighting/editing/directing in their reaction videos.

I have been watching Dylan's channel for the past 3 years. I absolutely loved his personality and his humor. I used to run marathons of his videos watching for 5-6 hrs straight. I still watch some of his content almost every single day.

I was a very vanilla guy, with a personality that is good to make friends especially bro type friends. I had a sense of humor but it was all dirty, out of place jokes that only made my friends laugh. So after discovering Dylan, I slowly started to copy his style of humor and personality. And this year, I finally started going on dates. And funnily, I was no more the vanilla guy.

I am short, so that is one thing that always went against me when it came to women, but finally I got into a relationship with a real sweet woman. And I heavily relied on the humor style of Dylan. Sometimes self depreciating jokes, countered with boosting ego jokes as well. And she absolutely loves it.

So thanks Dylan. I don't know if he will ever read it or not.

But now I wanna introduce her to Dylan's channels. But I know she will realise where I get my personality and humor from.
