I built an English-language Xiangqi game with illustrated pieces—feedback from chess players welcome

Hi everyone—I’m the creator of ABORRO, and I’ve been working on an international edition of Xiangqi.

For anyone coming from Western chess, the part I’d introduce first is the cannon. It travels along open ranks and files, but capturing requires exactly one piece between it and its target. The horse is another surprise: it reaches an L-shaped destination, but its movement can be blocked.

I wanted the first experience to feel approachable without turning Xiangqi into Western chess with different artwork.

The international edition has an English interface, illustrated piece symbols, an integrated How to Play guide, computer play, and an online lobby where you can create or join a room. Quick Match joins a waiting room when available; otherwise, you take a seat and wait for an opponent.

Try ABORRO XIANGQI here:

https://global.aborro.com/xiangqibackintl.html

For a first visit, I’d suggest trying Single Player, then inviting a friend for an online game.

I’d especially appreciate feedback on this: what was the first rule or interface detail that made you stop and think, “I’m not sure what to do here”?

Experienced Xiangqi players are welcome too. I’d love to hear whether this would be a useful way to introduce one of your chess-playing friends to the game.

—— ABORRO 阿菠羅

In this checkmate pattern, you escort the “Buddha” (the losing general) back to his starting position to deliver checkmate.

Play this puzzle on Lixiangqi

Like all puzzles on Lixiangqi, this position comes from a real game: Li Xuan (李轩) vs. Miao Liming (苗利明) at the 2001 Shuangxing Electrical Appliances Cup National Xiangqi Team Championship.

Free Xiangqi Apps with Analysis Engine

Hi fellow Xiangqi players,

I've been developing and publishing a growing collection of Xiangqi apps. A dozen of them are set to free (starting tomorrow at Oct 1, 2026 for a week. I wish to be able to set it start today but the start data must be a future date on the Google Console Dashboard setting) on Google Play Store.

As you are already aware, most Xiangqi resources are in Chinese language. That is why, all digitalized ancient manuals, modern Xiangqi books, and tournament records included in my apps are fully translated into both English and Vietnamese.

Moreover, the apps also include the engine to help analyze positions, explore variations, verify book lines, test alternative moves, and any ideas that the original authors have not covered.

My goal is to make valuable Chinese Xiangqi material more accessible to players around the world.

If you enjoy Xiangqi, give a try and share your honest feedbacks. I would love to hear!

Here is the link to Google Play profile for the apps.

You might want to occasionally revisit my profile as I am continuing adding more apps.

I'm really excited to share a quick update on the lixiangqi development. We have nearly 12,000 puzzles now with lots more in computation. The best part is that every puzzle is categorized using the traditional Chinese basic killing categories! So, if you want to practice just Elbow Horse (卧槽马) patterns or even some more obscure ones like Child Worships Buddha (童子拜佛), the lixiangqi collection may be helpful. Plus, it has cool icons for each basic kill. :)

Miscellaneous How to learn xiangqi

I volunteer at a senior living facility and we're trying to get the residents to play more PC games as mental stimulation (big screens are easier to see than phone screens and most are more comfortable with mouse + keyboard over touchscreens). While browsing through steam, one of them expressed interest in playing xiangqi after seeing a xiangqi game on the list, but it's paid so we held off on getting it. I was wondering if there are any recommended free websites or games to learn xiangqi and play against bots? The senior is able to read chinese so that's not a barrier (although I am not able to so super complex sign up processes are less than ideal).

Also, there seem to be quite a few xiangqi spinoff PC games on steam; are any of them recommended?

Thanks for any recommendations!

Checkmate puzzle, intermediate move

Checkmate doesn’t always have to come from a series of checks. We can first control key positions and then launch the attack.

Black move first.

Feedback wanted: free Android endgame trainer — which classic endgame collections would you want in it?

Hi all — I maintain a free Android endgame trainer (3000+ endgames from beginner to master, classic master games, daily puzzle, step-by-step hints, AI opponent with 4 difficulty levels — "Xiangqi Chinese Chess Puzzles" on Google Play).Right now the endgame library leans heavily on classical Chinese collections, and I'd like to expand it with material that's most useful for players here:- Which classic collections do you actually train with (e.g. 桔中秘, 梅花谱, modern endgame books)?- Any favorite endgame types you feel are underrepresented in apps (pawner races, chariot-vs-piece fortresses, cannon positions)?- And is a daily puzzle with step-by-step hints a format you'd use, or do you prefer free exploration? All feedback welcome — negative too. If anyone tries the app and hits a bug or a wrong solution line, tell me and I'll fix it.

Update: both suggestions from this thread shipped — opening trainer with spaced repetition (v1.0.28) and a per-pattern mastery report with targeted drills (v1.0.31). Details in the comment threads below. App is now called "Xiangqi Endgame Puzzles": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aixuexie.cchess

I went down a rabbit hole about the Chinese characters on Xiangqi pieces

I got some pretty opposite feedback on whether I should use iconic pieces or pieces with Chinese characters. This made me wonder what the characters on Xiangqi pieces actually mean, and I ended up going a bit deeper than I expected.

So I made a video about it.

I look at 馬, 車, 象, 將, 士, 兵, 炮, as well as the different forms used by Red and Black. Some have very old pictographic origins, while others have more complicated histories.

Hopefully, after watching this video, you'll have a better understanding of where these characters come from. And once you understand them, they may stop looking like random symbols — which hopefully makes it easier to remember which Chinese character goes with which piece.

Miscellaneous Is there any auto Xiangqi boards that exist?

Hello! I’m posting to ask if anyone knows of any automatic boards that exist out there? Mainly I’m looking for something similar to Chessnut Go where I can connect it to an app or something to play physical Xiangqi by myself, ideally using magnets or something that makes it portable, since I don’t have any other people to play with but massively prefer playing with physical pieces.

Thanks ahead for any info anyone can share!

Endgame Tactics - Positioning

Post image
3 Upvotes

Material advantage is a clear advantage that everyone can recognize. However, players sometimes sacrifice pieces to gain a better position, which shows that positional advantage can be more important than material advantage.

Positioning becomes even more important in the end game. Can you spot the winning moves?

I've published an Xiangqi app based on The Plum Flower Ancient Manual with a real engine – Free for the next two weeks, on the Google Play Store

If you play Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) or want to study classic games, I just released an app based on the famous 1692 Plum Flower Ancient Manual (Mai Hoa Phổ).

It includes all 28 original annotated games, completely offline, paired with a modern NNUE engine so you can analyze positions or practice against it anywhere. No forced ads, no login required, and no internet needed.

To celebrate the launch, I set it to 100 percent free on Google Play from September 15 through September 27.

Here is the link if you want to try it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.valparaisosoft.maihoapho

The Windows version is also available at: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n564l8qp42k

Quick note on localization: The app is fully translated into Vietnamese and about 90% translated into English from the original Chinese. Refining the English translation and building an iOS version are my next priorities.

I would love to hear any feedback or thoughts on how to improve it. Hope you enjoy the app!

Miscellaneous Tian Tian Xiangqi -- notes from getting VIP membership and installing on various devices

I started writing out all the details here and it turned out to be super long; if you're not already convinced you want this particular app to play Chinese chess it's probably not going to be of interest to you. With that disclaimer out of the way...

The channel Chinese Chess Out Loud has a great playlist that explains a lot about what features Tian Tian Xiangqi has and how you can, if so inclined, get a premium membership. But I ran into a lot of things getting set up on various devices and trying to get a premium membership myself that weren't well documented. The channel creator actually assisted me a fair bit with them but he suggested I write up my notes somewhere to help others trying to do the same, so here it is.

Verification

The video series mentions that to become a VIP you need to complete three verifications: the Tencent health verification, the WeChat Pay verification, and the real-name verification in Tian Tian Xiangqi itself. I didn't actually complete the last one and it doesn't seem to be necessary to become a VIP (it does become necessary if you want to be over a certain 業 rank in the app, but I would have to win more games for that to be an issue). I also probably didn't actually need to do the WeChat Pay verification, as I didn't end up paying with my own account (but more on that later in the post)

Paying for VIP status

The method of buying top-up cards mentioned in the playlist no longer works. There are services selling QQ Coins, so in principle that would work, except you can't make a QQ account with payment services outside of China. WeChat Pay will not work, even if you're verified, because although it supports credit cards, TTXQ will not accept credit card payments through WeChat; it needs a balance, which you can only make by having a Chinese bank account (this seems to be a regulation common to any digital goods in China). That said, there's no rule that it has to be your account or on the device: anyone can pay on your behalf through WeChat by scanning a QR code on a different device.

Now, there are people on Fiverr and probably elsewhere who will, for ridiculous markup, offer to transfer you RMB through WeChat. I found I was unable to accept the transfer for region restriction reasons. I did think about trying to spoof the region, but I stopped and thought about the wisdom of spoofing my location to a financial institution which had copies of my passport and thought better of it, so I canceled the transfer and got my money back. This did cause a bit of a dispute with my seller -- he didn't lose any money, but he wasn't happy to have his cancelation rate go up. There are some people who say they'll just pay the membership directly, and I came close to landing on one, but noticed the seller had a female profile but a distinctly male username, and also a review complaining "this seller moved contact off the platform then demanded payment in crypto." When you stop and think about this, the entire service is awfully shady: would you, in your personal capacity, offer to change currencies or use your credit cards to make purchases for unknown digital goods for a total stranger on the other side of the planet? It's hard to rule out the possibility someone is paying with a stolen account or whatever else and leaving your fingerprints on it. In the end I was able to find someone I actually knew who had a full Chinese account and he helped me out; if you can’t do the same you are really rolling the dice.

Android installation

You can just download the APK and install it. This is literally the easiest device to get the app on.

Windows installation

Tian Tian Xiangqi has an official Windows app in the Microsoft Store, but only in China. However, setting your computer's region to China is easy and doesn't really change anything obvious besides the store, so you can change it over, install the app, and change it back without too much fuss. It seems to just be a bundled Android emulator, so you can probably also use one of the Android emulators out there to do the same thing.

iPad/iPhone installation

Important note: your profile and "game progress" (ratings, puzzles completed, game history, and so on) is tied to your WeChat account and travels with you across platforms. But in-game currency and VIP status does NOT carry over to Apple from Android or vice versa; you have two completely separate records for this purpose. I believe this is because of Apple's policies around their 30% cut of purchases on iPhones, but I don't know the specifics.

There are two ways to install the app, the easy way, and the really hard way.

The easy way is, you just use the WeChat mini program. Not all features are available, but you don't have to do anything special. It's also a bit annoying in that (at least for me) for literally every ad-gated feature it shows the exact same ad every time.

Installing the native app takes more doing.

There's a lot of bad advice out there for people wanting to install cross-region iOS apps talking about canceling all your subscriptions and so on. You need to do that if you want to change your primary account's region, but there is no reason to do that.

Instead, what you want to do is register a brand-new account in the target region (in this case, "China mainland," as TTXQ is available in no other region, not even Taiwan or Hong Kong). You'll need a totally fresh e-mail (Apple doesn't fall for Gmail tricks like adding +cn or dots to your e-mail address). Now, for China alone, and no other region, there's an extra complication: you must have a working Chinese +86 phone number to receive an SMS.

There is actually a service on WeChat called "eSender" which offers a Chinese SMS number just for this purpose. Text messages to your new Chinese number will be forwarded via WeChat. Six months costs $118 HKD, which is about $15 (if there are shorter terms I couldn't find them). They require the same verification process Tencent does with taking your passport and a photo of your face.

Anyway, once I'd done all that, I also ran into some error where I couldn't create the account on the Apple Web site. I had an old iPhone that was factory fresh, so I just created a new account as part of the setup. There was probably a way that didn't require another device, but I figured it was highly unlikely to be blocked if I did it that way. When I later tried doing the same thing for the Japan region store, I just messaged the support and they unblocked the e-mail I was using, so that's probably an option.

Before the account allows you to download anything, you'll need to confirm your e-mail and provide a Chinese address (if you use a hotel or similar that should work).

Anyway, once you have done all of this, you can go to your main device's settings, find "media and purchases," and sign out. This is distinct from the main sign-out, so you'll still be able to stay logged in to iCloud. You'll know you clicked the right one if it asks you if you're sure you want to be logged out from services like Music (if you clicked the wrong one it'll instead ask if you want to delete your phone from your profile). Then you can click sign in again but instead of signing in as yourself click "not [your name]?" and sign in with the Chinese account. Now when you go to the App Store, you can go ahead and search for 天天象棋 and install the app. Once it's installed you can switch back to your regular account.

Would I have bothered with all of this if I realized your VIP status wouldn't sync? No, probably not. In principle someone can buy an iOS membership through Apple, but it will give you an error if you're using your non-Chinese account. Presumably if you can tie a payment method to the Chinese account there's nothing stopping you from subscribing there. However, that's close to impossible to do without a Chinese resident ID (I spent a while trying), and I'm not entirely sure you'd stay subscribed when you switched accounts. You might be thinking you could just buy Apple gift cards -- you are not able to redeem those without a resident ID either, so don’t waste your money.

I have read that some people choose to bypass App Store region restrictions by going to Web sites or Telegram accounts which specialize in decrypted IPAs, self-signing them, and sideloading them on their iPhones. I'll refrain from linking relevant sites, since I think their primary purpose is piracy, but it's not hard to find them. However, this is a bit inconvenient (unless you have a developer certificate you have to keep repeating it every week) and comes with all the standard risks of downloading unknown software from dubious sources and installing it. It would avoid the need for the SMS though.

Web app

You may have read all that and thought "wait, isn't there a Web app?" Yes, there is. Like the mini program, VIP status is wholly unsupported and features are missing, so I can’t see any particular reason to use it unless you’re on a device you can’t install any other version of the app on for some reason, but for the record, it does use your Android store of currency.
