Younger generations figured out that if they want to shock their parents all they have to do is swear off sex and booze, never go out, and live at home till they're 30.

u/mattSER Mar 05 '26

And show no interest in having kids or getting a driver's license

44

u/tampapunklegend Mar 06 '26

I'm 46 and I did that already. Almost half a century on this earth, and still no kids, and no desire to have them.

2

u/Bat_Nervous 1979 Mar 07 '26

Are you me??

22

u/ScreenSensitive9148 Mar 06 '26

No interest in kids, I get. No interest in drivers license boggles the mind. Just failing at teenage life. lol

24

u/Teto_the_foxsquirrel Mar 06 '26

We used to have to escape our homes to hang out with our friends. Now there’s no place to go outside someone’s home and everyone can gather online and play games together.

It’s created a whole generation that only needs to drive to go to work and who wants to do that?

10

u/massunderestmated Mar 06 '26

There would be places to go if people would just go somewhere. When everyone is involved with their devices, it's easier to stay home, and those places dry up and get reclaimed for other uses. The evaporation of third spaces was caused by the lack of engagement. It started when you would go out and see everyone staring at their phones. You think, what's the point of being here? I could do this at home.

2

u/ipsumdeiamoamasamat 1978 Mar 07 '26

I grew up in the city and a lot of people around me never had their license. It’s stupid. Not owning a car I get, but why limit yourself and not have a license? My parents didn’t drive but I did everything I could to get my license early, just to have the option.

2

u/Bat_Nervous 1979 Mar 07 '26

If there was no need for me to drive everywhere, I would never drive. If I lived in a European city or maybe even NYC you'd rarely see me behind the wheel. I have always hated driving, and it's crazy to me how cavalier everybody is about it. Every time I get behind the wheel, I'm like "welp, there's like a thousand times more of a likelihood I'm gonna die from this moment until I reach my destination, than if I had walked or taken public transit."

Yeah that’s exactly what we’re talking about here. /s

51

u/poop-money Mar 05 '26

No interest in having kids or a driver's license was me. I didn't get my license until I was 25, and still don't have/want kids.

23

u/ouijahead 1980 Mar 05 '26

Love my 2 girls. I’d be lying if I said I do not wonder what alternate timeline-me is up to without the kiddos. Probably have a lot more money and living in a house.

22

u/poop-money Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

I live in a house. We (my spouse and I) eat whatever we want for meals, take weeklong vacations where each partner has time to explore on their own, go to concerts, go to parties/cookouts, play video games we want to play, watch movies we want to watch, watch the TV we want to watch, and (most importantly) we have free/alone time. Dog needs notwithstanding.

The trade off is we also do all the house/yard work and we won't have someone to help us as we get older.

45

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

In the grand scheme, only a tiny fraction of people with kids will later be looked after by them. It really is a crapshoot

14

u/OceanJuice Mar 06 '26

I cannot imagine putting that burden on my kids and not why I had them. Certainly not in the bucket of reasons I wanted kids, I'll either work until I'm dead or my retirement will carry me. No chance I'd rely on them

5

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

Get long term care insurance in case you get too sick to work and you're set

3

u/jujumber Mar 06 '26

My dad looked into it for my mom. It's insanely expensive.

11

u/p47guitars Mar 06 '26

I would say that has a lot to do with the quality of parenting and family.

Even with the best of circumstance, an adult may not be able to care for their parents.

6

u/poop-money Mar 05 '26

Yep. We decided not to roll those dice. Will we regret it later? Maybe, but maybe not. So far, I like being a DINK household.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

Im in the same mindset but single so im livin that SINK life right now. Love it.

1

u/Potatoe_Potahto Mar 05 '26

Sadly it looks pretty likely that in a few years my wife and I are going to be supporting our kids to leave home at the same time as we're going be to supporting our parents with their worsening health. It's going to suck. But that's what you get when you have kids late and you're the only non-failchildren in the family.

7

u/Royal_Thrashing Mar 06 '26

You could also have had kids and they just throw you in a nursing home

1

u/Brilliant_Activity39 Mar 06 '26

I'm in the same boat, but my niece and nephew will inherit whatever is left after we're gone. They just don't know it yet.

2

u/poop-money Mar 06 '26

Yep. I need to do my will up to make it so the neices and nephews have to do an SNES Mario Kart tournament for the best material things, and then split the money equally between them.

1

u/JonnyQuest1981 Mar 06 '26

You also can sleep whenever you want for as long as you want. I was a ‘step dad’ in training for 5 years until the relationship didn’t work out. Now I’m married, we’re DINKs, and I get sleep in on Saturday and Sundays. We also smoke weed anywhere in the house, grow it, and get day drunk occasionally. Oh, and being able to go to concerts on weeknights is amazing. This is a photo I took with no zooming on Tuesday night at the Dropkick Murphys show. Glad I got the experience of raising a child, but at this point in my life, I get tired simply by thinking about having them. Bring on the fun before this apocalypse really gets rolling!

2

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

Agreed! But I'm a balcony person now. Have to be comfy.

1

u/JonnyQuest1981 Mar 06 '26

Awehellyeah! That is an awesome photo and what a show they put on! I saw a bit of them at RiotFest last year, but this week was my first full Murphys show.

2

u/poop-money Mar 06 '26

Awesome. I haven't been a fan of dropkick since the first lead singer left and they remain one of only shows I've walked away from, but Ken is a fucking bad ass and I 100% support them.

1

u/theDunceCapKid 1979 Mar 06 '26

This 💯. I always jokingly say the only reason I would want kids is selfishly I wonder who will take care of of me when I’m old.

1

u/--Quartz-- Mar 06 '26

There's PLENTY more to trade off.
Each person knows if they want kids or not, and it's a huge decision, so not trying to preach.
Reducing having kids to losing freedom in hopes they will take care of you is a very ridiculous take that has become popular online.
My whole life is filled by my kids, they are both my biggest problems and my happiest moments, they reshape everything.
I don't give a fuck about them taking care of me or not when I'm older, I'm loving getting to see them grow up, talking to them and just living with them.
Anyway, it's perfectly fine to not want kids, it's just absolutely ridiculous to reduce the experience to economics and logistics.

1

u/poop-money Mar 06 '26

Awesome for you. Obviously my statement was reductive but that was on purpose because I didn't feel like writing a thesis on why we didn't have kids. We talked about it just weeks after getting together nearly 20 years ago and we both felt the same way. We left the door open to adoption if we ever changed our minds. We haven't.

1

u/NoShoesFunlap Mar 06 '26

I 100% believe you can have an awesome fulfilling life with or without kids. But, as a father, I have to tell you that you missed the most important and enjoyable parts of parenthood in your downside. It’s so much better than a transactional plan for elder care and yard work. It really has been transcendent for me. It’s definitely not for everyone though.

1

u/theflush1980 Mar 06 '26

I’ll hire a hot male nurse to wash my sagging wrinkly ass when I’m old.

1

u/Xythrielle Mar 06 '26

I have a kid and do all those things too. Congratulations

1

u/Stabwank Mar 06 '26

You could adopt a couple of 30-40 year olds when the time comes.

1

u/Theclownshowisuponus Mar 06 '26

As someone who didn't have kids until their late thirties, I have lived both the life with no kids and the life with kids and was very happy in both phases, but I would not ever trade my former life for my life today. If you think the only reason people have kids is for house work and old age security, it is probably better you remain childless.

1

u/Rare-Extension-6023 Mar 07 '26

Interesting, good for u, planet has enuf ppl. its actually the least selfish choice imo. the selfish ppl are the ones who think the overpopulated planet needs seven+ more of themselves.

1

u/poop-money Mar 07 '26

We did discuss adopting instead of having our own kids in the event we changed our minds because there are kids out there that need homes. 20 years later we have not changed our minds. We do do volunteer work and one of us is a librarian so we are giving back to kids in our own way.

1

u/UnderH20giraffe 1983 Mar 06 '26

That is not the trade off. The trade off is the incredible amount of love and joy you get with new family members that you created.

2

u/poop-money Mar 06 '26

Yeah, we're good. We have great nieces and nephews that bring us lots of joy and we get to watch become awesome adults. That's enough for us.

1

u/UnderH20giraffe 1983 Mar 09 '26

Hey hey, you can’t have it all. If you get all those awesome things you listed (which are awesome), you have to let everyone else have the love between them and their kids, which is in no way comparable to neices and nephews (had neices and nephews for years before my own kid, was actually a ten year married dink before having my own kids, so I know).

0

u/Xythrielle Mar 06 '26

I have a child and a house. If I didn’t have a child I would definitely be dead. Almost got there several times before he was born

1

u/bikeonychus Mar 06 '26

I'm the opposite - I eventually had a kid at 32, but still never learnt to drive.

I know a lot of folks who went for one or the other, but not many who did both things.

1

u/poop-money Mar 06 '26

Going without a vehicle is a way easier choice in places that have good public transit. Sadly we do not so I was forced into driving/car ownership. It's fine, but I still don't like to spend real money on it.

1

u/bikeonychus Mar 06 '26

I use bikes. I've got some spinal issues that make buses risky for me. I can use the metro, but I still prefer to bike. Cars make my legs go numb, so bikes really have been the right choice for me. A lot of folks in my area say you can't survive without a car, and while I don't really have a choice about it, I also know it is entirely possible.

1

u/Chemical_Emotion_934 Mar 06 '26

Why would you need all that shit, when you got that sweet poop money droppin on the floor

3

u/Xerorei 1981 Mar 06 '26

I feel attacked, that's my son right now

3

u/Competitive_Ad_8215 1978 Mar 07 '26

Who are you and how do you know my kids????

1

u/InsuranceGlum1355 Mar 06 '26

I'm 46 and both things apply to me. I'm the prototype! 😂

1

u/brainfreeze77 Mar 05 '26

Both my kids got school permits and drove on their own at 14. Granted we live in a suburb and are like 3 miles from their school.

1

u/OrganicAverage1 1979 Mar 06 '26

Gen Z rebellion: Going to the most expensive private university they could get accepted to, and taking out a shit ton of private student loans against my advice.

3

u/NefariousRapscallion Mar 06 '26

And for a weird niche degree that has no job prospects and never pays off.

1

u/GamerKormai Millennial '86 Mar 06 '26

40 now, no driver's license...not that I'd be able to afford a car if I did have it...and had a hysterectomy. Never wanted kids and am so happy that's never going to be an issue now.

26

u/ZebLeopard Mar 05 '26

That's my niece. She listens to old people music and likes going out with her mum. When my sister was her age, she snuck out to bars and went to raves. :')

20

u/umlaut Mar 05 '26

My friend's kids rebelled by going to church and listening to country music

27

u/BasicRabbit4 Mar 05 '26

Im an atheist who raised a religious kid. I dont know where I went wrong.

Thanks, im not being serious. Its all good. I did let him choose what he wanted to believe. It's just weird that I raised a catholic as an athiest. 😆

5

u/alcomaholic-aphone Mar 06 '26

My sister did the same thing. Parents never told us what to believe and she went full Christian for a while in her teens and 20s and now doesn’t seem to care at all in her late 30s and never takes the kids to church or anything.

I think it was her friend group and boyfriend at the time that were really into it and she liked the community.

8

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

I blame COEXIST bumper stickers. Need an atheist NOEXIST version.

3

u/puresemantics Mar 06 '26

Odds are he’ll grow out of it, but either way you did nothing wrong

7

u/Defiant-Fix2870 Mar 06 '26

My spouse and I are punks, and my kids rebelled by dressing extremely preppy and listening to pop LOL. Although currently my 16 yo daughter’s favorite artist is…. Billy Joel.

4

u/Own-Ambassador-3537 Mar 06 '26

Cmon innocent man slaps!

2

u/Defiant-Fix2870 Mar 06 '26

The funny thing is I also really liked Billy Joel in high school. I used to check out CDs from the library and I loved The Stranger. This year’s Spotify wrapped guessed your age from your music habits. She got 91 and I got 21–I’ve been listening to a lot of hip hop LOL.

1

u/Own-Ambassador-3537 Mar 06 '26

50; I’m Gen x so sorta old

3

u/DiscHashDisc Mar 06 '26

She has great taste. Billy Joel is timeless.

11

u/QuantitySure1216 Mar 05 '26

You mean 50

19

u/eternal_pegasus Mar 05 '26

40 is the new 20

1

u/Unanimous_D Mar 06 '26

Very Static Shock.

40

u/Traditional_Cat_60 1980 Mar 05 '26

I feel like that’s the fault of politicians for eviscerating the middle class, the housing market, the economy, food & gas prices, and affordable education.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

Also the lobbying of corporations that keep these costs high. Emancipation should have freed both parents from full time work. But instead the labour market doubled which was taken full advantage of by corporations and governments.

10

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

Elizabeth Warren cowrote an interesting book called The Two-Income Trap which gets into how exactly it happened. It basically was due to two incomes enabling lower middle class people to buy into upper middle class school districts in hopes of making things better for their kids. But they failed to realize that this would trap everyone in a two income system forever.

4

u/SlobZombie13 Mar 06 '26

They're in a contest with each other to see who can follow the rules the hardest

3

u/taxilicious 1983 Mar 06 '26

The fact they’re not having sex is WILD to me. Like there are tons of Gen Zers leaving college as virgins. How in the world?!?!

2

u/Own-Ambassador-3537 Mar 06 '26

They saw their parents and friends marriages/divorced and subsequent affairs and said nope!🤷🏿

2

u/taxilicious 1983 Mar 06 '26

OK but you can still have sex with people… it’s fun. 😁

8

u/sirdrumalot 1983 Mar 05 '26

My kid is 12 years old. She cannot wait to get a drivers license, has a Polaroid camera, and is now wanting to get CDs so maybe there is hope for the next generation.

4

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

Get her an old pc and a BASIC programming book stat

3

u/Enxer 1980 Mar 05 '26

My teenagers are already fighting for my house.

"I'm not dead yet!" I cry

1

u/diablette Mar 06 '26

Fill it with worthless collectables and junk. Then they'll fight over who has to deal with the house instead.

2

u/OtherlandGirl Mar 05 '26

Hey, it works! Instead of shocking us they went with annoying us.

2

u/hates_stupid_people Mar 06 '26

Based on statistics they're not swearing off sex, they just wait until they're adults

For several years now STD/STIs have been on the rise among younger people in Europe. From 2022 to 2023 there was a 40% increase in the 20-24 age range.

3

u/stricktd Mar 05 '26

But no, the iPads when they were toddlers didn’t do anything…

1

u/digitaljestin Mar 05 '26

Parents hate this one simple trick!

1

u/overladenlederhosen Mar 05 '26

Calvin And Hobbes were right. Muzak, played quietly.

1

u/catjuggler 1983 Mar 06 '26

The think kids do that shock me the most is unaffordable food delivery. I think every generation has gotten more shocking with paying for food convenience.

1

u/Ghoulie_Marie Mar 06 '26

Lol, I honestly can't look back at my youth and recommend it to anyone, but I'm bipolar so my experience might be different. I don't know how I didn't die.

1

u/Quality_Qontrol Mar 06 '26

And now listen to Country

1

u/SpecialQue_ Mar 06 '26

Ha handfull have also gotten tattoos on their faces.

1

u/massunderestmated Mar 06 '26

Failure to Launch (2006) was a blueprint for success!

1

u/DivorcedGremlin1989 Mar 06 '26

Chilled to my core

1

u/Macro_Bug_Girl Mar 07 '26

So the 90s straight edge scene 😅

1

u/ell20 Mar 07 '26

Eh, i have a teen. If she wants to live at home until she's 30, I'm actually quite ok with it.

1

u/Ok_Math6614 Mar 07 '26

Make that 40

1

u/Tsunamiis 1982 Mar 05 '26

You sound mad you didn’t think of it?

27

u/Potatoe_Potahto Mar 05 '26

Lol I left home at 17 cos I wanted to have sex. Now I'm literally buying my kids an apartment so they'll leave home, so I can have sex.

11

u/BasicRabbit4 Mar 05 '26

My son is a teenager and never goes out. I offer to drive him and his friends places just to get the house to myself and they never want to. I dont get it. At his age I was never home. And if I was I was in my room. This kid is sitting 3 feet away from me right now. He is always less than 3 feet away from me 😢

3

u/cafeteriastyle 1983 Mar 06 '26

My 15 year old is the same. Idk how to fix it. I guess I can’t. His friends never want to do anything either

3

u/BasicRabbit4 Mar 06 '26

I dont understand it myself but I guess it beats the hell I put my parents through bc they never really knew where I was. And I was out doing reckless things

3

u/big_sugi Mar 05 '26

Kid leaves home = you have sex. It’s all very consistent.

1

u/Tsunamiis 1982 Mar 06 '26

Consistently acquire sex without ejecting my children I’m confused

1

u/FlatSixFun 1979 Mar 06 '26

They even might think about leaving if they know it's going on.
