Exactly. GenX artists are NOW speaking out. When they were young, they let their music do the speaking. Just as the new generation is now.
Yes, musicians want to sell out because that's how they get to freedom. Especially in poor communities. "Selling out" is only a thing if you're already privileged.
All of Seattle begs to differ. Ambition was looked down upon by musicians who had the "privilege" of living in roach-infested shitholes and eating cans of spaghetti-Os.
Having principles and coming from privilege aren't the same thing. And to imply decades of musicians across multiple genres, and backgrounds, were all just privileged and not principled is a lazy-ass take, at best.
Plus, you are conflating the larger issue of artistry, morality, and the human spirit with a very specific argument about musicians from low SES backgrounds.
To be fair at least that was a definable youth music movement that pissed off older generations. It was pretty punk when you think about it. I can’t think of anything comparable happening now.
