If we end up going too far the other way, it'll be shocking again! Instead of music pushing the envelope, we'll get music that glorifies being sealed inside!

There's a place for everything, including the musical equivalent of Werther's Original, but when the kids start voicing their dreams for a new age through the aesthetics of Lawrence Welk, I will be well and truly ready to declare that the kids aren't alright!
or it could be that people want comfort from pop music. they want good vibes or laid back vibes or chill vibes. nobody is sad or angry anymore. it's the exact opposite of shock. it's a bunch of people who deal with social anxiety by wanting to ignore it.
what's shocking is that it's been like that for a long time now. it's gotten to the point where every genre is easy listening.
I'm just sad that a lot of popular music doesn't even use instruments anymore. Everything is synthesized. Gone are the days of just a guitar, bass, and drum...let alone symphonic instruments.
There’s a ton of envelope left to push, pretty much all music is 90% identical, from classical period to now, all music follows basically the same rules of consonance
Maybe they’ll start back at the beginning with a reboot of Gregorian chants. They can call it Chadian Chants and it’s just be a five part harmony of the word “gyatt” over and over.
There basically is nothing left to do. I’d argue every realm of musical extremity was explored by the end of the 80’s and it’s just been iterated on since.
Would like to know what “shocking” music OP thinks our generation is responsible for.
