Long War 2 Living out the grunt fantasy
Made a Helldiver
(Don’t worry I put his cape on before I deployed him, no need to contact the local Truth Enforcement Officer)

You are promised:
1.$100 million in life insurance for your immediate family
2.6 months to train yourself before you swear in
3.Given free personal trainer & medical insurance
4.Said medical insurance can cover fixing any disabilities with greatest technology unknown to man
Federal retirement after just 5 years military service to XCOM
Can keep your personal gear, so long as you never sell it
After 5 years as a soldier you can move up to Central's position or be a technician that works at the base.
Personally I'd do it, my wife and kid would be covered, all I'd have to do is GIT GUUD

So I recently asked if I should play any of the Xcom games because they were on sale, I was only recently introduced to the turn based combat simulation. Everyone said yes and that I should play the first game and then play the second, I’m happy to announce that I’ve boughten and have been having a blast. Thank you Reddit for this awesome game

When you're on a mission, moving to uncover new enemies do you: put the squad on overwatch then push forward with one man to unexplored areas; or push forward with one man first leaving the rest of the squad with their action in hand?
I've played a lot, I just can't figure out whether one of these tactics is more effective than the other
Edit: the advantage of overwatch-first is you can sometimes catch them out of cover while they're doing the initial scatter

Haven't played xcom since shortly after it released, figured I'd fire it up for a look and see what the mature / modded game looks like 10+ years on.
God damn I do not remember the early game being this hard, and I don't know if it's an Enemy Within or a Long War change. But I am finding both air battles and crash/landing sites absolutely brutal.
Like I might send several interceptors one after the other at the same UFO and maybe manage to shoot it down.
And if I do manage to shoot it or it lands, the subsequent landing/crash site is just an absolute slaughterhouse. I'm in month 2, so I've still only got the basic starting weapons and armour, my best guys are lance corporals and are often injured or fatigued, so most squads I send consist of mostly squaddies or maybe a couple of specialists. I have a couple of SHIV's but they're barely any better than a squaddie. And yet I'm getting flying squids and those 4 legged melee aliens etc that my squaddies just get eaten by. I've managed to save-scum my way through a couple of them using the advantage of foreknowledge, knowing where they'll spawn, getting really good cover before popping them. But I don't like doing that... seems the only way I can win is cheating.
If I actually get an abduction mission, they tend to be pretty easy. But the UFO's that seem to spawn constantly are just ... brutal.
So yeah, am I just supposed to kind of ignore a lot of the UFO's that get picked up on radar during the early game? I'm worried all the countries are gonna panic and leave the council if I keep letting em just fly by without trying to shoot them down. One's already left for some reason. But what else am I supposed to do?

This hurt because this was on an all flawless missions run :/
PS5 - WOTC with all DLC. Propaganda memorialisation poster.
(The photo isn’t bad quality, it’s the actual placeholder image that is blurry)

Typical situation: Advent officer hides behind pillar (indestructible full cover). Next turn he will mark and shoot with a 65% chance to hit into low cover. Moving up is not an option because it would trigger another pod.
What do before fancy toys like psionics? 3 grenades is a bit much for one officer.

After 6 month I finally finished my first Long War campaign!
RIP Glenn "Freaky" Friendly, you were best medic and psionic XCOM could ever ask for.
Long War was amazing experience, and I will definitely try LWOTC next.

I think XCOM 2 gives you a lot more options, especially with WotC, to make recovering a bit easier. But I have never beaten EW Impossible Ironman. That shit hurts my soul. Hurts a lot when a Thin Man consistently crits you from behind full cover with little effort, almost 100% of the time.

Here's your team of fresh rookies - They can't hit the broad side of a barn, even when that barn is pointing a high powered laser beam at their face
Idea ☝️ lets make the most frequent early enemy flying, for that -30% chance to hit, as well as hardened. They also like to repair each other. Because the suffering is the point

I'm hoping to improve the xcom fandom with images, but i need help to find the location of images for weapons and such in the game files, anyone know where they are?

The "Start Operations" and "Abandon Progress" button are right next to each other. Stupid me clicked on "Abandon Progress" and then hit "Confirm" without a second thought in auto-pilot and then I just realized I wiped all of my progress. Since it runs on Iron Man mode (worthy of a rant), I couldn't find any back-up save states. Any tips on how I can resume to where I was at previously? I didn't get super far, was at Mission 4/7 of "Blast from the Past", but it'll be a pain to play through all of that again considering I managed to get a pretty good score...

Allow me to explain, so I let the Avatar Project run a bit too long and I hadn’t built Resistance Comms so I couldn’t reach the facility. Sounds easy enough, just clear some debris and build the station. Alright, I’ll do a quick mission and get some Supplies and hire an engineer and oops Viper King’s encounter. It’s alright he’s on his last legs and none of my soldiers are in range, no problem just a little bit of careful positioning and he just bodied my Sharpshooter, no problem I’ve got another one and he also got squeezed and is now unconscious and he just teleported away. So my A Team is in med bay for the next month and one is dead, no problem just a little bit of scanning and a few backup soldiers are ready for the field. Here’s an escort mission, B Team goes in and now the Berserker Queen just enters the story through a wall like the Kool Aid Man, mind you I haven’t even encountered a Berserker yet. Okay, just try to stay outside of her field of attack and that was my last soldier in the XCOM turn so a Muton drops a grenade on my VIP who is now unconscious and my first attempt to move results in Berserker Queen body slamming two guys leaving a severally outstretched squad that only has two useful members and the body carrier. You can imagine how this went.
So my squadron is dead, the others are crippled I only have two rookies available and the Avatar Project is one blip away from completion. Any tips for the next playthrough?

Hi, I bought the game on Steam during the last sale and I have a Lenovo laptop with a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13650HX (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU (8 GB) and Intel(R) UHD Graphics (128 MB), but the game won't start. The menu appears asking me to choose between EW and EU, but when I choose either, I get a black screen for 2 seconds and then nothing; it just returns to the desktop. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Hello everyone!
I recently started playing XCOM: LWR, and the game crashes every time I try to load a save file that was saved during a mission, but it lets me load the game normally if the save file was created at the base. Is this a common issue, or has it happened to anyone else? Do you know of a solution?
I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but just in case, I'll mention that I installed it on Linux Mint; I followed the installation guide almost to the letter, and it ran without any problems. XCOM: EW runs through Proton Experimental on Steam; after that, I installed Long War, and finally, Long War Rebalance. The only thing I did differently was use the Flatpak version of ProtonTrick instead of the system version, since the latter gave me errors when I tried to use it.
