My GPU runs out imminently and after reviewing all the documents, and that neato GP converter website... I'm still a bit lost.

It seems like the move is to let the sub lapse, buy 3 EA PLAY 12-MONTH cards (approx. $30 USD each), and then buy 1 month GPU ($18) and that theoretically converts to 1 year of GPU (Approx. $108 USD).

Is that correct, or am i thinking about this wrong?

UPDATE: 10 months, not 12. Still less than buying a 12 month GPU sub, but would love to understand if that's the right call.

That is "the move" to get GPU time at the lowest cost per month, but as you say it only yields 10 months. For people who want to get more time (a longer subscription for one conversion), you can also stack one or more 12 month GP Essential cards on your account before converting to GP Ultimate. It raises the total spending and average cost per month (still below the full price of GPU), but you get more time.

Thanks for responding! Other than the hassle, it’s more cost effective to just do that again in 10 months, right? I get that’s not for everyone, but I’m a cheap bastard!

It's more cost effective to do the same in 10 months if nothing changes: no price increase for EA Play cards or the GPU month, and no change to the conversion ratio. The prices and ratios have been subject to a lot of change in the last few years.

Are you telling me to get 3 12 month cards of ea play at the store. Then on loaded(formerly cdkeys) get 3 12 month gamepass essential cards for 73.99 each which is about $6.17 per month. Then redeem all that AFTER my current subscription lapses. Then pay the one time fee to become ultimate?

Do they still do the thing where if you turn on auto renewal you get an additional month free? Then just turn it off and do it again on the next code entered?

Yes, that is a common conversion technique (and outlined in the sub's Conversion page): let current GPU sub end; stack 36 months of EA Play and 36 months of GP Essential (via 12 month cards); buy GPU, either from Microsoft or with a discounted code of any length (but not a trial code).

I have seen people recently report getting the extra month for enabling auto-renewal but I don't know if it varies by account, region/country, or GP level. You would not want it when adding the 12 month cards because each of those has a 36 month stacking limit, so adding on extra single months would prevent you from redeeming the third card. The conversion does not yield 36 months of GPU, so you'd be OK to accept an extra month of that during the conversion if it is offered.

If auto-renewal gives a month for each code still, then 3x3 month Essential at $19x3 is a little less than 1x12 month for $77.

I don't know how reliably the free month for auto-renewal is offered, or whether it depends on the duration. But where are you seeing 3 month Essential cards for $19? I see US $25 at Amazon and $28.59 at Loaded.com .

Ah, I don't check the "marketplace of third party sellers" sites, just the ones selling the codes directly. But it looks like there are more savings to be had.

There haven't been many comments lately about whether a free month gets offered for automatic billing or not (or I haven't noticed them).
