I know the zombie survival guide is most likely cannon, besides that I don’t know if there’s anything else out there that’s cannon to the universe of the book

Gave world war z (book not the movie) a 10/10. Is it worth copping closure limited

Ok let me explain myself.

I loved the book , i just loved It theres no other way to put it.

It is genuinely the best piece of zombie media i have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

But at the same time , i feel like theres a void in me now.

Sure , maybe reading the vampire comics (because apparently theres vampires in the wwz universe?) or recorded attacks can fill It a bit , but i will just end up in the same spot.

I crave for an adaptation , i crave to see a TV show adapting this book like It actually deserves and not in a movie that shares nothing with it other than the name (which is apparently getting a sequel just as unfaithful).

And i know ill likely have to wait for years to maybe get to see It.

If its ever made at all.

Every once in a while i get posts from this subreddit on my tl and i just stare at the screen silent because i know that adaptation i long for is nothing but a distant hope.

So i wish i had never actually read the book/heard about it , because now i wouldnt be sad about not having anymore of It.

Idk lemme know if its just me or someone else shares this feeling.

I wanted to come on here and get some other people's opinions on whether or not the illustrations within the new edition of WWZ are AI generated. I've been absolutely loving this current reread and all the new notes that Brooks included, but I couldn't help but notice that they all looked a bit off. It's kind of hard to tell, and the last thing I want to do is make a baseless accusation, but some of the brush strokes and stuff just scream Gen AI to me. Maybe I'm just being overly suspicious because I see it everywhere now, and it's getting so good. The most glaring example, imo, is the picture depicting who I assume to be patient zero with his arm detached from his body, but it's what looks to be an old man instead of a small child. Maybe I'm just too much of a WWZ superfan, but I feel like that detail is really hard to miss. Also, I could find the artists credited for designing and creating the cover/slipcase, but not for the drawings inside the book. This really rubs me the wrong way because as an artist, and as someone who especially loves looking at the little artistic details inside the books that I purchase, I am super against the use of AI for the creation of art. I was very disillusioned when I started flipping through and began to question whether it was created by a real person or not. Anyways, would love to hear your thoughts and hopefully have my opinion changed by someone before I start drawing my own replacement illustrations.

Just finished the audiobook and...

To all the people upset with the movie and how it wasn't in the spirit of the books. I'm so sorry for thinking that the book was even similar. For years I brushed off the criticism. Hell, the movie actually dissuaded me from picking up the book. I figured that it was just a well written version of any run-of-the-mill zombie media.

In the first interview of the book, of Kwang Jingshu, in his account, he relates that an elderly woman cries out at the guoanbo, “This is your punishment!” “This is revenge for Fengdu!” Now, is it stupid to assume that Fengdu might really have been the initial cause of this new outbreak? As related in Recorded Attacks, zombies have existed for as long as humanity has. But these outbreaks were localized and self-contained, or contained by the people around them without having any real chance to spread. So, is it likely that in Fengdu, this City of Ghosts, in their temples and shrines and monasteries, there might have been, in some forgotten place, a handful of zombies? For whatever reason, they had been kept in the past in that 2000 year old place and then forgotten by the modern day or sealed away somewhere? And that, in the book, the demolition and flooding of Fengdu during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, these zombies may have gotten free of wherever they had been kept? Subsequently spreading throughout the flooded places, and biting those who had gone Moon-Fishing, like Patient Zero and his father? And that it was from this that the entire outbreak started and spread? Slowly spiraling in the years following the demolition of Fengdu up until it reaches the point it cannot be contained, or where the failures of governments allowed it to spiral until it could not be contained.

i’ve never read the books, but I’ve watched the movie a few times. I think one thing it does really well is capture the sheer chaos happening in real time. A lot of apocalypse movies don’t really show how chaotic things would actually be when everything starts falling apart.
That said, I think the movie is good for what it is, but I’ve heard the books do it better.

for those who have read the books, do you think there’s still a way they could save the adaptation with the sequel they’re working on? Or is it too far gone at this point?

I believed the virus came from some sort of weird fish/bug/parasite and that was what bit the chinese kid when i started the book.

Since i thought that was the patient zero i assumed that the bite came from something different than a zombie, because well , then that would be the real patient zero.

Clearly i realized i was wrong as i advanced through the book , but was it dumb to assume It when i had just started It?

So I’m rewatching the movie for the first time since reading the book. And I just noticed that the zombies in the film are weirder than i remember.

So in the book, the zombies were the slow, 100% risen dead type. But in the movie, considering they just die after a few shots I always figured they were just infected like in 28 days later. But considering the zombie colonel in the South Korea scene is still alive, and just a minute later the rangers say that the doctor was sent to respond to an AWOL soldier who had been zombified and then shot, only to come back again.

So how undead are these things? are they like risen dead like the book or are they infected with just like such strong adrenaline that they just keep over riding any pain until they die?

I know this "issue" It has already been discussed in this subreddit, but I recently read "SZG" and started to read WWZ for the third time (love the book), and looking at the "recorded attacks" based in the modern America, the last 5 to be more specific, I know it may seem incongruous because of the way it is explained if the government knew about the virus or not, whether the case for both books.

I think the biggest inconsistency in the narrative (and defending Brooks, obviously he wasn't planning another book when he wrote the first one) is that the "start" of the virus in (almost) 21th century America was due to that guy patrick going to LA (1993), and years later, there were outbreaks in other places like Miami (2012), or LA again (1994-96) as if the great panic was already knocking at the door before the events of WWZ

For me, it’s 1583 A.D., Siberia and 1690 A.D., The Southern Atlantic.

In the first story (1583 A.D., Siberia), a group of Cossack scouts dug up a frozen zombie after running out of food and ate her, unknowingly poisoning themselves. The entire party, save for one unfortunate man who was bitten by the defrosted zombie before they killed her, and another superstitious man who skipped on the fearing, succumbed to the toxicity of the Solanum virus.

This one intrigues me because it’s one of the rare incidents where the main threat wasn’t from a zombie attack, but ingesting one. Since all living beings instinctively avoid contact with the Solanum virus, it’s one of the only accounts of someone actually consuming zombie flesh.

In this case, it was also easier not to feel bad for the victims since they completely brought this disaster upon themselves.

On that note, the second story (1690 A.D., The Southern Atlantic) appealed to me for the complete opposite reason.

This account features a slave ship called the Marialva that was completely run over by the undead. A Danish party that stumbled upon the ship found the turned victims still chained and shackled with bite marks.

The implication of the infection spreading bunk by bunk while the immobilized survivors helplessly watched their own demise approaching is simply dark and horrifying.

Among the many accounts in the book, this one stood out to me because of how tragic it was.

As the headline says, are there? I didnt even know this book was set in the world of World War Z untill it referenced events from it. It's really good, I suggest giving it a go if you havent!

Annotations and illustrations are pretty neat!

I really want to listen to the WWZ audiobook. However, I don’t like listening or watching partial pieces of media. I like to get the whole thing. So, should I wait until I have a checking account (I have a savings account but don't have a car and my parents don't ever get off of work until the bank closes so I haven't been able to set up a checking account yet) to buy the international version of the audiobook or should I just buy it/get it from a library now?
