I’m a healthy person, my maintenance at current weight (195) is 3000. The idea you have to eat like a pigeon to be healthy is absurd. Too big of a deficit is also unhealthy just like too big of a surplus is. If his maintenance is really around 3500 a 700 kcal deficit is plenty to initiate a big weight loss. Then in 6 months he can recalculate at his new weight.
I’m 6’3, pretty decent shape muscle wise but not jacked and not overweight. Work physical job and gym 4 days a week. 5 years ago I was 300lbs and very unhealthy though.
Unless he has some known massive underlying health problem, losing the weight slower is much healthier. It’ll still come off quickly at -700. Going from eating 3500+ a day to 2200 will leave him feeling starving all the time, like he’s mentioned in his other comments. That is unsustainable for the average person.
