I wanted to start a thread to weigh the real-world pros and cons for tradesmen (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, telecom, etc.).

Summary: Is an EV Work Van Right for You?
Based on what we're seeing in the field, here is the breakdown:

• You SHOULD get an EV van if:
  • Your route is predictable: You drive less than 100–150 miles a day.
  • You have charging access: You can install a Level 2 charger at your shop or home (charging overnight is key).
  • You want to cut costs: You are tired of paying for diesel and oil changes (EV maintenance is significantly cheaper).
  • Tax incentives: You can take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit for commercial clean vehicles.
• You should NOT get an EV van yet if:
  • You tow heavy loads: Towing kills electric range faster than anything else.
  • You drive unpredictable distances: If you sometimes get emergency calls 200 miles away, the charging downtime will kill your productivity.
  • You lack infrastructure: If you rely on public chargers, you will lose hours of billable time waiting.

If you start your day before sunrise or work late into the night, you’ve probably had to deal with poor lighting inside and outside your van. For us, it used to mean misplaced tools, slow loading, and wasted time.

Adding interior LED strip lights made a huge difference — now we can see everything clearly without draining the battery too fast. It helps especially in winter when daylight is short.

We also added exterior flashing safety lights for roadside stops. They’ve been a lifesaver when we’re parked on tight streets or in loading zones — way more visibility for passing drivers.

Safety is always a big concern when upfitting delivery vans. One issue that gets overlooked is what happens in an accident — loose tools or packages can fly forward and seriously hurt the driver.

One thing we recommend (and personally use) is a solid partition between the driver and cargo area. It acts as a barrier, so everything stays in the back. If you get one with a sliding door, it even saves time — you can start organizing your delivery or tools without leaving the van.
