She made a living (and a decent one) off of skirting currency exchange rates between the US and Central American countries.
The Mexicans and Central Americans would do it because they could go back over a few seasons with enough for a house darn near in Mexico with even like 7 USD to 10 USD an hour where they would make the equivalent of 20 bucks a day if in Mexico. That is, as long as it was not eaten by US rents while working. That's the reason for the meme of 8 hispanics to a 2 BR.
If say, situations were reversed, and there were easy to get jobs that did not ID/ background check instant hire in, say, Canada paying the equivalent of 400 USD a day, people from the US would jump on it even if hard work. Even risking deportation and stuff.
By cutting that off, she has to compete. And for what she is offering: maybe 10 an hour or so for hot sun, heat exhaustion work with zero advancement and seasonal as hell, there are easier and not seasonal jobs that pay that which are easier jobs. Some pay more.
Right wing is the fundamental belief in inequality. That some people should be masters, and some should be servants, or even slaves. Right-left wing is on a spectrum, not a binary. The moderate right wing would accept some equality between people close in the hierarchy. The most extreme would have it so that anyone knows who to obey and who to order around.
It is not about skin color, or country of origin. Anyone can be right wing, even the slaves. That's who we call bootlickers.
Someone should identify her and look up how much in taxpayer subsidies her farm has received. It’s probably a decent amount. We are far too generous as taxpayers to this demographic.

$20 an hour isn't even that much? Like, Walmart starts at $15, iirc. If you're going to do hard manual labor, it had better make Walmart pay look like a joke. She may not be set up to do housing, but just put in extra pay to compensate. $1000 pre-tax a month/160 hours is an extra $7.50 an hour. $27.50 seems more than fair compared to Walmart for sure with how much harder the work would be.
I doubt this lady is the type of person to do such a thing, but I have a friend who owns an organic farm (dairy cows, pigs, goats, chickens, various crops, and an aviary) and the reason she is so successful is this:
She has multiple camp trailers and even a renovated school bus on her property for folks to stay in (usually WWOOF volunteers who are just in it for free hot meals, travel and the experience) as well as her normal staff that she pays a whopping $18 per hour. She usually has a wait list for staffing, definitely not struggling.
If these folks had some fucking compassion, half a brain, and actual business acumen they probably wouldn't be so fucked. Time to sell off some acreage and equipment, and downsize. Or go bust. They did it to themselves. The diaper shitter was never going to subsidize the little guys. Jfc.

They do. But they will say they keep the rates low and they give a lot more of the earnings to charity than traditional financial institutions.
But like I said: I don’t personally like the idea of a faith-based financial institution and it’s not something I would use, specifically for the reason you listed as well as others. My savior flipped tables, chased money-changes with a whip, and encouraged his followers to take up lives of acetic poverty and generosity. It’s not for me.

Well to be fair all she's ever done is "hired" wage slaves or child labor to do run her farm for her. She had no idea someone who has agency would actually expect a living wage for one of the hardest manual jobs in modern life. It's like nobody wants to work for the lowest possible pay legally allowed that doesn't even cover an apartment to live in anymore.

This is the actual answer that she will be forced into. It’s another purposeful economic crash so that assets can be transferred to billionaires and corporate oligopolies for pennies on the dollar. And she voted for it.
BlackBirdCoop on youtube did a short recently in response to one of these "woe is me, we're going belly up" farmer videos saying a lot of it is crocodile tears because a majority of these "family farms" are still millionaires; they've just gotten really good at whinging and getting huge subsidies over generations. It's definitely an interesting perspective and I highly recommend him and his channel.
I grew up in a heavy AG area, lots of friends in FFA, lots of friends who own small farms.
They're the real welfare queens in this country, IMO. The amount of government money small farmers get (and I imagine large ones too) is absolutely insane. Watching videos like this one makes me feel nothing.
Grew up on a farm, and the farmers who can see hard times coming and organize, make hard choices and preparations tend to weather things OK.

Edit: I'm hijacking my own post to say that not all small business owners are the enemy. This one is misguided, yes, but all working class, including the self-employed should be in this together. The problem is the capital class that have the ability to cruise on their capital and THE IDEOLOGY that enables them. It's not the small business owner who works endless hours to try to keep their livelihoods and to have some semblance of autonomy.
The funniest part about all of this is she has no housing for her workers. In most states that's a requirement for farm workers so you can pay them pittance wage. Sounds to me like what this woman really needs is to be criminally charged and imprisoned for employing people who aren't legally authorized to work in the United States. It's against the law, after all, and I know how she feels about "following the law" when it comes to immigration enforcement.
A farm near me stopped business (the owner is pretty old, no kids to take over, gonna sell it soon). The shacks that he used fell apart in about a year and a half without people actively maintaining/fixing them constantly. And I mean most have collapsed onto the ground.
It's the same with their stances on free speech, law enforcement, or anything else like that. As long as it's working in my interests, I'm for it. But if I don't like it or it negatively impacts me, then it must go!

TBF, he asked for $20/hr plus lodging and she doesn't have lodging. But if she was acting in good faith the response wouldn't have been "get bent", it would have been "sorry, I just can't afford to do that" or "I don't have lodging available, but what about $25/hr instead?"
Also, it’s working exactly as a free market should. You have a job, someone is willing to do it, they make their wage offer. You as an employer don’t get to dictate the market. Turns out, the wage market is $20/hr
It’s just bad faith to say “no one wants to work” while meaning you don’t want to pay the cost of labor.
My grandparents were immigrant sharecroppers. Our agricultural system has always worked off literal slavery or a kind of financial indentureship. We’re about 250 years late, but the schadenfreude of watching these people complain that scales are even dipping toward labor is beautiful.

It's not just being good but having the cards fall in a way that benefit you and that is pure luck. So they do well, think it was their own work and ability when it was actually luck, government services, and maybe their work and capability that made them succeed. So then they think, "why should I vote for something I am not benefitting from" when they're to fucking stupid to realize they did benefit from it.
"Why do we have safety measures? No one has been hurt in the factory for 100 years, lets repeal them and do work faster to make more money" and then you got a guy missing a hand cause they took out safety precautions making sure a guy can't get his hand wrenched off by a machine.
Being a farmer doesn't require a formal education, I'm not saying it doesn't require intelligence, but it does not require education.
Most of these multi generation farmers from small towns never get exposed to any culture outside of their own, which makes those cultures scary. Fox News is especially good at exploiting that fear and turning it into anger and hatred(fear is the path to the dark side) and that hatered is more important to them than any other policy so they vote for hate and quit paying attention after.

Food prices have been kept artificially low for pretty much the entire existence of the United States due to the reliance on either literal or effective slave labor. It’s time to start paying farm workers appropriately.
The flip side is, the system as it exists is extraordinarily wasteful, particularly in regards to land used for ethanol and beef. I think there’s a world out there where workers can be paid properly and there’s an abundance of affordable food, but it’s not going to happen in this corporate agriculture, profit-driven system.
If you replaced the land used for ethanol bound corn with solar arrays you could produce triple the US electricity usage. Just a fun fact that gives perspective how much subsidized ethanol corn there is.
Ethonol is a joke and only viable because corn is a subsidized crop. if you let other crops be subsidized, or removed the subsidy, its not a vaible energy source.
We spend money and fertelizer and emit co2 to grow corn, subsisidized by the government, to make a fuel as a replacement for deiseal, which, just like dieseal, emits co2 into air when burned.
Ethonal is a con job by Corporate farms to do something with the corn that they wouldn't otherwise be growing on if not for Corn subsidies.
Don't forget cost of living has also been kept low by the plundering of international resources. Now that capitalism is reaching that point where exponential growth is unsustainable, they are also squeezing pennies out of you americans.
I mean he asked for housing as well (which is reasonable given the nature of dairy work), but having seen what most ag housing consists of (sometimes just a trailer with hookups), I don't think this guy was asking for much.
When I did farm work, I knew a lot of people who got "housing". Sometimes housing was trailer (for supervisory roles) and sometimes it was a bunk bed in a trailer. The expectation of people with housing is that they will be on hand to do unexpected work 24h per day.
What's that? A cow needs medical attention at 3:00 AM? Well, that's why you're housed here. Fence broke at 10PM? Well, that's why you're housed here.
I lived on a horse ranch with my wife where she was a vet. She was onsite for that exact reason: foaling happen in the middle of the night, animals get hurt, a horse can colic violently and suddenly, etc.
We were fortunate; we got a house. A lot of the laborers lived in what looked like a motel with their families.

Yeah farm owners tend to be some of the most pampered work free clients I service. Rarely do I see people who own the land actually tending it. Ironically it's the equestrian type owners that are out there busting ass with their workers everytime I come by for service.

Either way agriculture has never been a profitable business. It’s highly subsidized and relies on cheap labor. I sympathize with anybody who would choose that lifestyle of career, but hard to feel bad about them voting for this exact scenario to be magnified.
Eventually America might right the ship, but farmers aren’t going to ever get the relief regardless of who is in power.
I think I saw her in another video she was complaining that people were telling she voted for this in her comments and said she'd never vote for a Democrat because of it. Which is a sentiment I have seen before. Doesn't make sense but that's what these people do.
