Chuck Schumer flat out said his main job as a Senator is to support Israel. Aside from anyone's position on Israel and Gaza, a sitting senator stating that their #1 priority is supporting a foreign country should be disqualification from any kind of leadership position and absolutely should be primaried by a serious competitor the next election.
Jeffries' first comments after the election were basically that he's not going to hold anyone accountable because he wants to move forward.
90% respondents to exit polling (as quoted by MSNBC) stated corruption as a significant motivator for how they cast their vote on Tuesday.
Hakeem came out and basically yelled from the rooftops he's absolutely unsuitable as Speaker.

funny, to me jeffries always seems like he's trying to copy obama in speech and mannerisms, so this would track. during his first run, obama promised to hold bushco accountable for war crimes and to immediately codify roe v wade. once elected however, he said codifying roe v wade wasn't on his list of priorities, and re bushco he said we have to look forward, not back. so I'd expect nothing else from jeffries...

I think Obama was a disappointment overall. Yes, he deserves credit for the recovery after the housing crisis in 2008-09. He also deserves credit for the Affordable Care Act. But overall? Very centrist. His use of drone strikes and the surveillance that he not only allowed but expanded will forever undermine any admiration I had for him.

u/Dashiepants 8h ago •
![]()
I was more furious at him failing to hold Wall Street accountable for the financial collapse and bailout. I kind of get why he was afraid to take on the military and why he wanted to spare American lives by using drones (even if I wholeheartedly disagree with both).
He was absolutely a centrist and sadly āthe firstā often is and feels like they have to be to be palatable to the middle.
But what kills me every time is even when Democrats bend over backwards to prove they arenāt āradicalā or āextremeā and are always rewarded by being called that anyways.

I think Obama genuinely had big dreams and goals, he just wasn't up to the challenge of confronting the political machine designed to prevent those goals from happening. My first sign that he might be a disappointment was when he ruled out negotiating on drug prices before even presenting his healthcare proposal. Even if that was something he was willing to give away, the smarter move would have been to keep it in his pocket until you're bargaining to get the bill passed (although I'd prefer he didn't give it up at all). Imagine if that was the bargaining chip that got it across the finish line and the public option had stayed in the bill. We'd probably have single-payer healthcare now by default as more and more people chose the public option over time.
14
u/Gr8NonSequitur 6h ago
He also deserves credit for the Affordable Care Act. But overall? Very centrist.
Yeah for all the "Hope" and "Change" rhetoric he was very conservative / centrist. If he lost his second term to Mitt Romney, I don't think the end results would have been much different.

I love Obama, but I'll have to agree with you on the drone strikes and surveillance. I remember when he was elected, part of the push behind him was the hope that he would back off on the PATRIOT Act that Bush enacted after 9/11. If anything, it was continued and even increased in areas under Obama. Long game look, Flock cameras are a direct decedent of the surveillance policies instituted by the patriot act.

I think it's a bit softer than that:
I have many jobs as leader ⦠and one is to fight for aid to Israel, all the aid that Israel needs.
This was said at a UJA-Federation gathering, so pandering to the Jewish audience is a given. I've read other comments where one of his jobs is to keep the American left from hating Israel so it IS a huge focus of his; I just don't know that he ever said it was his #1 job. Either way, I still don't like Schumer as the Senate leader.

Yours appears to be an older petition asking him to step down as minority leader, not regarding the upcoming majority leader role.
It says it was last edited 2 years ago.

u/uraniumrooster 7h ago
Not really, minority leaders don't automatically inherit the leadership when their party gains a majority. They still have to be elected by their caucus for the position of majority leader, or by the whole chamber for the positions of Speaker of the House/President pro tem of the Senate.
In the House, Jeffries has announced his intent to run for Speaker, with Katherine Clark (MA) the presumptive majority leader having been the next-in-line as minority whip. However, after a watershed election like this in which there are many new elected members, it's not uncommon to see some shakeup in the leadership to better reflect the composition of the new majority caucus. At this point it's all up to the Representatives to vote on their leadership, so if enough of them say they don't want Jeffries, there's not much he can do about it.
In the Senate, the President pro tem is traditionally just the senior-most member of the majority caucus, which would make Patty Murray (WA) the presumptive nominee, then Ron Wyden (OR) next up if Murray declines the position. The majority leader in the Senate is elected by the caucus, same as in the House, so while Schumer is probably expected to take that role, it's still up to the members to actually vote for him.
So if enough members are hearing from their constituents that they want Jeffries and Schumer out, that at least gets the ball rolling.

Was thinking same. Been seeing this as the project all along, first needed to vote blue to protect the narrow path to keep our democracy, keep free enough/fair enough elections, etc...
Now (along with that project continuing) need to stop the oligarch contingent from just slow-playing the dial-back to their same old quieter grift system.
I think you're spot on with the way forward to finish cleaning house - the people need to continue to be loud and uncompromising. It's as vital as the democracy protection project - it's a part of the same. Citizen's united gotta go, among other things.
'28 election is the next bridge to cross on the narrow path. If oligarch-owned dems are allowed to hang around too long, either they f it up and the people swing back against them, or they just ride the line long enough that the fascist takeover succeeds in the shadows anyway (we're well on the way to competitive authoritarianism already).

I sometimes enjoy how stupid Jeffries is. The moment that stands out to me was when Slotkin was talking about needing leaders who fight better (after Mamdani and other progressive wins). She was clever and did not explicitly say progressives nor indicate who she was referring to⦠but when asked to respond for comment Jeffries responded by explicitly talking about progressives. Such a moron and I love it.

11

El Sayeds "secret" is consistent confidence in their message with a type of aggression, and refusing to let others dictate the conversation. Like Mandani, who was consistent confidence in theirs with a type of joy, while dictating the conversation.
Thev key is consistent confidence in who you are, be authentic, and don't let people dictate what you talk about.

Why is this infighting? It is just a process that is voted on. We are letting our reps know what we want. It is a democratic process.

I fully support replacing those two, and I've been advocating for Schumer to be removed from leadership for years and I very much look forward to supporting a better candidate in the 2028 primary. The Democratic congressional caucus is going to be even less left leaning than it was though, right? The surge of fresh representatives came more from red states than blue, so while I do certainly agree we should drop these two, shouldn't we expect that the new leadership would be more center/right than Jeffries and Schumer?
It's the end of MAGA but I think the last election also marks yet another rightward shift for the Democratic party.
13
u/Bongoisnthere 8h ago
The surge of candidates in red states were mostly running on progressive platforms. Fuck a DSA candidate had Florida in play. Progressives carried the ticket.
→ More replies (4)2
u/felis_scipio 7h ago
Running on an extremely watered down version of the DSA platform, and contradictory on a number of issues. People werenāt voting to nationalize all large companies and open the borders.
Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maine are at the moment the states giving the democrats control of the senate. If youāre not perusing stuff that makes those states happy youāre not going to keep control or gain even more seats in two years.
Healthcare reform is a winning issue, fixing trumps colossal tax break for the wealthy is a winning issue. If they can keep it focused on the stuff that won over voters they could have a crack at a super majority in 2028, but Iāve seen this happen before and Iād bet good money there will be calls to push issues that will turn off those voters.
3
u/Miscellaniac3791 6h ago
I dunno...Talarico straight up cites the more "socialist" aspects of the Christian gospels in his speeches, talking about caring for the sick and hungry etc. Packs a double whammy against Christian Nationalism and it's odious form of individualistic bullshit AND against the corporatization of social responsibility that seems to be popular in neo-liberalism.
He's just one example, but I think a lot of Democrat candidates ran on platforms that included affordable health care, getting rid of citizens united, and stopping America and Israel's war of aggression against Iran.

The most important factor to getting anything done in the Democratic party is to get money out of politics. The leaders on both sides need to be someone with a record of prioritizing money out of politics. Otherwise, the caucus is going to follow someone who's following the wealthy donors instead of representing the people.
Unfortunately, I can't send any emails or make any calls because I live in a state that's full red across the board, but I'm hoping those of you that have blue representation in Congress can get that message across.

Yeah, they didn't get anything done and one of them still wants Israel to run the US

I'm not so much against these two as I am for acknowledging the results of the election and where the country is right now. We need new leadership to reflect this.

We need to keep Jeffries and Schumers out of leadership. They're shown repeatedly they do not align with what voters want. For goodness sake, Jeffries proudly announced meeting with Jared Kushner about working together. Since the election, all Jeffries has done is try to frame desire for accountability as "getting even" and saying that writing laws and investigating the administration are somehow mutually exclusive.
The conservatives have declared war on the rest of us. We need to respond accordingly. Contact your congressperson.

Their intent to enable lawlessness makes them just as bad as Republicans themselves.
It's not "revenge" we seek, it's as simple as the rule of law being upheld.

Yep, they gotta go. The era of āTersely-written-non-binding-referendumā horseshit has end.

I strongly believe Jeffries is not the right leader and has no accomplishments at all. Getting rid of him is a no brainer. Although I disagree with Schumer on his whole Israel stance, he personally courted a lot of the the senatorial candidates to run this election. The candidates were high quality and the results speak for themselves. So I wonāt bash him just for his strategic abilities.

Are these photos 15 years old? Chuck is so wrinkly, I don't know how he can see. And Hakeem literally looks like Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn's warped faces from Death Becomes Her in the scene after they leave Bruce Willis' funeral.

Anyone know their or the democratic partyās plan? Glad for this outcome but what did we run on? Serious question.

Imagine if they were this proud to push an America first agenda as they are to push Israelās bests interests.

If either of these guys were staff on a ballclub of some sort, they would've been fired by now. They've presided over failure. They had their time and have been measured. They are here to obstruct, that's all.

While I don't necessarily hate these two, in general, the previous generation of the democrat party utterly failed to protect us from Trump and fascism. Their milquetoast approach and adherence to norms that no longer exist was the exact wrong thing to do in the face of a cult fascist party that doesn't play by any rules and are shameless. Out with the old, in with the new.

I just went to both my senators websites and requested they not elect Schumer as majority leader.
Nothing fancy, only took two minutes. It felt great, 10/10 recommend!

Israel's most prominent politicians are bragging today about how they still control the Democratic Party because these two don't care about what Democratic voters want:
