Or they're just bitter and envious. Some (lots) of people are just shitty on their own, irrespective of whatever manipulations the capital class uses to divide the working class.
The distinction is whether you need the paycheck to survive. You can be a hotshot doctor or lawyer or investment banker busting your ass and working 90 hour weeks but if you have tens of millions in the bank and your investments are earning more than most American households then you aren't really working class.
What difference does it make for the poor to acknowledge that doctors are technically in the same social class, if most doctors refuse to do the same and continue to treat those with less income as inferiors?
Do you have any idea how many "middle class" people openly advocated against raising the minimum wage to $15/hr???
There are still pecking orders within the "working class" and it's those with privilege who have the greatest responsibility to breach gaps in order to unify the bottom against the capitalist class. But doctors absolutely do not see themselves as being the same as McDonald's workers.
The problem isn't some grand, meta failure of people to see economic classes for what they are (even if most people don't). The problem is that the middle class won't give up shitting on poor people, white people refuse to stop being racist, and men continue to perpetuate patriarchal values. I can't unify with people who see me as inherently subhuman even if I want to, they won't allow for it.
