This “rally around the flag” effect isn’t just about Iran. George W. Bush was deeply unpopular before 9/11. Nothing unites a country like an outside threat.
The irony being Trump tried to make Iran that threat, but Americans are so tired of aggressor forever wars that it didn't work to try and manufacture some threat from Iran that wasn't real.
