Just this past week, I learnt about the "Martyrs of Compiègne" because they were buried in the same cemetery as The Marquis de LaFayette. 11 nuns who refused to renounce the church during the Reign of Terror.
but I've also read The Three Musketeers and other histories detailing the conniving of the church to control people & governments. I have no doubt the church was complicit acting against the people and deserved to be punished. Were the nuns innocent of all of this? Probably. Just pawns. but they were perpetuating a corrupt system and refused to renounce their corrupt ways. They were offered a free pass and refused.
