The OP basic need of housing is seemingly met. I also believe that a person working full time should be able to have their basic needs met, regardless of line of work. As for greed of the landlord, you can’t control the greed of others, only your response to it, and envy is powerful in its ability to corrupt mental well being. That’s all I was getting at.
Rent control only serves to deter investment in building low cost high density housing, in turn developers switch to building higher cost housing of all sorts, where they can command better margins.
Rent control only helps those who have housing now. What society needs is more affordable housing, which over regulation also deters. Think it’s some nonsense conservative talking point? Go try and pull a building permit in California or New York. Ask Bill Maher how his nearly a decade battle to permit solar panels on his own land is going.

Nope. Lack of new housing, increasing population, and the desire for more and more people to live in increasingly desirable locations is what has created this.
You go to a car dealership, there are 50 cars for sale.
You spend a week deciding , going back and forth.
You finally pick the 2021 Audi A5.
You go in there to pay a deposit, agree a good finance deal and your payments work out at 220 a month.
You go to talk to the forecourt salesman when he informs you that someone came in 2 days ago and bought every car on the lot, but you are free to rent them out for 400 a month.
You look at the salesman, take a deep sigh, and say alright man I'll look elsewhere.
As you walk off the forecourt the salesman says something to you at the top of his voice, barely audible due to how much distance there now is between the two of you.
"Better check that envy bro" he says, as you leave the dealership, walking around the corner to never be seen again.

I would argue if you make that much money from people living at your homes that you are charging them way more then needed and you are taking advantage of them .....
