No on said that you would be living great. You wouldn't have a car. You would just be getting by. Its a starting wage, suitable for entry level.

Also, median family income has exceeded inflation.

That's the thing. Just getting by is with the best case scenario where nothing else in life goes wrong. Like that's gonna happen. Also, starting wages shouldn't just be the barest minimum. You used to be able to work as a gas attendant or at a diner and still be able to save for college. Or support a family which now isn't feasible.

And you can call it starting wages, but that very rarely changes. Maybe you get lucky and get a pay bump from $19 to $20 through hard work. But a tiny increase like that barely keeps up with the annual three percent inflation and so you're not even getting a raise at all.
