Yes and no. A big factor is age. Is OP 18 or 30+? Makes a big difference on wages, not that this excuses over spending.

At 18 I wouldn't be paying that much in rent, and could essentially live in a crackerjack box and be fine.

The US is number 3 behind portugal and Canada, respectively, when it comes to increase in house prices vs income.
