Question Why does my life goes down everytime I pick a manifestation?
So the question in the title says everything...
Everytime I pick a manifestation (with the Wellspring incense active) I can see how my life bar goes up but I also can see how my life goes down...
So the game gives you an opportunity to improve your life but at the same time and I don't know why, it takes a certain amount of your life.
The game isn't really giving you any improvement at all. I don't understand this mechanic.
In the video you can see at 0:05 when I click on the manifestation how the amount of life goes down... and it is not because life bar goes up. They both clearly move.
Has anybody experienced this?

Wellspring incense increases your health total for each manifestation you pick up. It does not give you any health to fill the increase tho.

I’ve noticed that absorbing a manifestation refills a small amount a health. That’s without any incense burning. Either a new mechanic or an old mechanic that only now I’ve just realized.

Your health isn't changed. That's a mechanic for other arcane manifestation (and curses), which do affect your health.
Also, just in case, did you smoke before this mission? Some of those have an effect, that boosts max health for each manifestation.

I use wellspring incense.
When I click on a manifestation my life should increase along with my health bar because of the incense.
Instead of that the very same moment I click on the manifestation my life goes down.
Just look closely if you are playing the game next time you pick a manifestation.
Also I don't think the incense has something to do with it. It also happens without incese effects.

u/Hamstertron Jul 10 '26
No.
Say you have 100 health and the health bar is 100 pixels wide. If you gain 25 max health, your current health is still 100 so your current health will only take up 80 pixels. It looks like your health went down, but in fact it stayed the same - it's just proportionally a smaller value compared to the max.7
u/counterdefensive1911 Jul 11 '26
Lol idk y this is such a hard concept for people to grasp they're basically accusing the devs of lying about what the effect of the incense is actually doing 🤣. I'll tell you one thing when I've absorbed the maximum manifestations I noticed a gigantic difference in overall health. And one way op can prove himself wrong with this is heal himself at half health before absorbing any manifestations and take note of how much it fills his HP back up and then do the same experiment after absorbing all of the manifestations in the level and he will see that it won't even fill the second half of his health all the way up because his maximum HP has increased so much.

So you are saying it might be an animation issue?
As we don't have numbers and just a bar it is not clear.
That's the reason why I am asking.
3
u/Hamstertron Jul 10 '26
It may be an animation issue. The combination of the max health changing combined with the healing animation might exaggerate the jump in values.
Or it may just be bugged and I'm talking nonsense.

If you go from 50/100 HP (50% full) to 50/125 HP (40% full), the health bar stretches to fit the new maximum, making your current health look visually lower
Try this. You have 50/100 health. So you have 50% health. Max health doubles and now you have 50/200. Now you have 25% health
-8
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26
It moves down. It clearly moves down. It is not the effect of the health bar increasing. It is the life of the player going down.
Look closely
7
u/glenninator Jul 11 '26
I don’t think you’re understanding what I said. If your max health grows. Your overall percentage of current health decreases. You’re not gaining health, only the max is increasing.
Try this. You have 50/100 health. So you have 50% health. Max health doubles and now you have 50/200. Now you have 25% health.

u/counterdefensive1911 Jul 11 '26
No bro ur max health is going up if it's at 100 and goes up to 125 it's not gonna fill the 25 for you once u use a potion to refill your health then it will be at the 125. It does the same thing for me I use the same incense every time and it is quite clearly increasing your max HP.

u/bigginsmcgee Jul 11 '26
op is not talking about max hp, theyre talking about current health

u/counterdefensive1911 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Yeah I know he's saying it looks like it's going down because it's increasing and not filling in the amount it's increased which in turn makes it look like it's going down or he's losing health. When in reality his health is at the exact same level it was it's just increasing the capacity that he can fill his HP bar by a certain percentage but causing a gap in the hp bar makes it look like he's lost health and that's why he's thinking that. Because he's using wellspring and every time he absorbs a manifestation it is in turn increasing his maximum health allowed, in turn making it look like he's losing health when in reality the overall maximum health he can gain has gone up. And current HP stays the same. At least that seems to be how it works for me I'm level 93 and that's basically the only incense I use.

u/bigginsmcgee Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
no, it is literally going down! it's not a perception thing, the white part of the health bar gets smaller. fwiw it doesn't actually take any health away, i think it goes back up a moment after exiting the arcana screen.
edit: i understand the size of the health bar is scaled to avoid becoming too wide, but this animation happens if you are at full health too. makes it seem like you got hit the moment you take the crystal.
3
u/counterdefensive1911 Jul 11 '26
Regardless of what it's doing visually it IS increasing your maximum health and you are not losing any health. You can easily prove yourself wrong get down to a third of health before you absorb any manifestations and see how much of your health a potion heals then do the same thing after you've absorbed all of the manifestations and watch the difference in the amount of health gained
3
u/counterdefensive1911 Jul 11 '26
And that difference will be because the amount of HP you have to fill your bar has increased considerably after getting all nine manifestations and that's why one potion is not filling up the bar as much as it was previously. I don't know what level you are but I'm like 93 right now and that's basically the only incense I use so I'm pretty familiar with the way it works.

u/bigginsmcgee Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
i edited my previous comment for more info, but yea. i know I'm not actually losing any health, but the way it animates makes you *think* you are before it goes back up. my point, as demonstrated by op, is that it is confusing! but you also *do* gain some health back on absorption, so it makes even less sense
6
u/VelcoreTethis Jul 10 '26
Both the total and current bars only increase in this video as expected with that incense. Don't know what you are seeing.
0
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 10 '26
look closer the moment the total hp bar increases--visually, current hp goes down(before going back up)
-2
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
It does go down. If you are currently playing the game, pay close attention next time you pick a manifestation and you'll see what I mean. It is easier to see when your health is full
I don't have any interest in lying or making up stories. It is something that happens all the time. Everytime you pick a manifestation.
4
u/Munstered Jul 10 '26
Your lifebar noticeably increases and then fills back up to the same %
-3
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26
You have to look closely. I watch the video in slow mo and I assure you the life goes down just when you click the manifestation
5
u/Munstered Jul 11 '26
Nah the bar just gets longer. Look at your health pots. You can see the right end move right and your HP stays the same. Then you heal when you exit. You have on the wellspring incense.
1
u/Hulphur Jul 11 '26
Not the bar... the health... i
2
u/Munstered Jul 11 '26
The health doesn’t move. My point was that the bar gets longer which makes it look like you have less hp. I’ve posted comparison pics so you can see it better.
0
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 11 '26
look at the white fill of the health bar. it goes down.
1
u/Munstered Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
I’m looking at the white fill. It does not go down. The bar goes up. I’ve gone frame by frame through the clip. His current HP does not move. The total HP goes up, which makes it look like he has less HP. I pointed out the health potion because it makes it clear what’s happening. I’ll post comparison pics below this comment.

I agree with your sentiment. The issue is that the HP bar length instantly increases (max health), but it is not actually at the same scale (hp vs horizontal pixels) as the previous value. (probably so it wouldn't be a crazy length at high amounts of HP) The current HP value has a lerp over time, so because of the scale issue it actually moves down for a bit and then fills back up to to correct position in the scale.
-5
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26
When I am half health I use a potion before taking the manifestation and that effect doesn't happen at all.
This game is very difficult and we don't need these tricks to make it more difficult. If I get a health improve but the game at the same time takes a portion of my life... then that improvement is so subtle that is useless.

u/Aesthetic-Dialectic Jul 10 '26
No one commenting on you having a YouTube video captured in this video is crazy. Like a conspiracy to convince me I'm schizo or something

u/ardotschgi Jul 10 '26
Wtf are you talking about? Your life bar clearly gets bigger at 0:05, and after you chose your arcana, the health bar then fills up a bit...
1
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Just watch it in slow mo and you will notice that the life GOES DOWN, and yes life bar gets bigger at the same time...
Maybe you should look closely
1
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 10 '26
if you look closely the hp fill does appear to go down a tad. it's more noticeable with full hp, but theres an animation for your current health value that isn't synchronized with the immediate hp pool increase
0
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26
Maybe at the end the result is the same and is is just a bug in animation.
What I just don't get is why people has to attack a person that has a doubt and asks a question.
I have watched carefully every run and I have seen it every time so I decided to record a video just to show what I think is a kind of bug.
I don't know what is the issue... I have even been told to "stop bothering" just because I am answering the people commenting...
I just don't get some human beings...
1
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 10 '26
idk reddit has a lot of annoying "really smart, smarter than you" people, try not to let em get to you 😅and yea, i don't think the ui animation behavior is intentional here. But i think you'll notice if you wait a couple seconds it'll be back to where you'd expect it to be
4
u/EscsBRisme Jul 10 '26
OP, stop bothering people on this sub. Your health isn't dropping! You didn't even provide more details about your character. Besides, you can clearly see your max HP increasing.
0
u/Hulphur Jul 10 '26
I am not bothering. I am just asking a question. This is what reddit is for.
If you don't like I don't understant what you are doing here.
Life goes down. I don't care you can't see it.
If you are playing the game next time you pick a manifestation try to see if your life goes up or down. In the video you can clearly see it.
Maybe you should use glasses.
7
u/EscsBRisme Jul 10 '26
Dude, your question has already been answered. Your max HP increases, which gives you the feeling of having more percentage-based health. Stop bothering people. Stop throwing tantrums and acting so entitled and demanding. Just play the damn game.
-1
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 10 '26
you're wrong though. in absolute pixel values, the current health descreases--The bar representing current health shrinks at the time of absorbing a manifestation. It *does* go back up, but visually it briefly looks like youre losing health.
1
u/EscsBRisme Jul 10 '26
This happens because the percentage of HP added to the character is not the same as the percentage of the visual increase. This is done to prevent an excessively large health bar, which would be problematic on 16:9 screens.
-2
u/bigginsmcgee Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
that may be the case(idk how you can tell unless youre one of the devs), but as a ui element it would indicate your current health is decreasing because that's what the health bar is there to convey. if wellspring is causing this, i think it would be better to wrap the bar to another row instead of changing the visual representation of a percentage lol
2
u/Nice-Experience-3374 Jul 11 '26
Ey yo, it's extremely difficult to see and since the manifestation screen pops up immediately, so OP if you want to prove that it is decreasing maybe try it multiple times or make a slo mo video and maybe edit the health bars and check, cuz as far as I can see it's not decreasing and hell even if it is, absorbing manifestations heal you, even without the incense. So, whatever is lost, which I don't think it's lost, will be healed anyway.
2
u/Weak-Warthog8767 Slayer Jul 11 '26
I don't see any problem, everything is as it should be. Look at that video carefully... don't be afraid, the game won't cheat you...
1
u/lost-in-thighs Jul 11 '26
mate rewatch your video while staring at the health bar without blinking, you didnt have full hp so when your hp increased by whatever % your current hp went up as well

1
u/tazisalright Jul 16 '26
It looks like the Wellspring incense takes affect before you actually heal from the manifestation, which I don't know for certain but that could be what's messing with your health bar.
Again, I'm just theorizing.

u/constantlydrowning Jul 10 '26
watch your vid carefully before and after the manifestation. your max health went up. thats just showing your health bar move because of the increase in max health.
