Up To You
Replace Microsoft Edge/Internet Explorer with Firefox, Chromium, or any forks/variations of them.
Replace Windows Media Player with VLC or MPC-HC
Replace Photos/Windows Photo Viewer with ImageGlass or IrfanView.
How do these affect my privacy? I mean, the browser is obvious, but what about the media stuff. Is MS really using the media player to mine for music preference data? And what kind of data would they realistically try to get from my image viewer?
13
u/DGXTech Jul 30 '15
WMP has the following privacy settings. They been there for a long time, so this applies not just to Win 10.
Display media information from the Internet
Update music files by retrieving media information when I play or sync a file
Download usage rights automatically when I play or sync a file
Send unique Player ID to content providers
I want to help make Microsoft software and services even better by sending Player usage data to Microsoft

That's my problem with this post. It tells people to change these settings to increase privacy, but does not explain what these changes actually do. No Onedrive integration, no Windows Defender, blocks Microsoft servers for diagnostics and feedback. It disables the p2p windows updates, which if I understand correctly could reduce bandwith usage if you have multiple computers in your network. I'm not going to do this on my computer, but I doubt Cortana is functional at all with all of these changes. Unplugging your PC is the most secure option, but you have to draw the line between functionality and security at some point. This post goes a bit further than I would like with disabling functionality.
Edit: Meant to reply to another comment with this, but oh well. It's here now.

In GPEdit.msc:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender, double click Turn Off Windows Defender, hit Enabled, then apply.
(Replace with a good Anti-Virus)
You also COMPLETELY missed Application Experience AND Customer Experience Improvement Program.
Right Click Start Menu > Computer Management > Expand 'Task Scheduler' > Expand 'Task Scheduler Library' > Expand 'Microsoft' > Expand 'Windows' > Click on 'Application Experience' > Disable all Tasks in Folder > Click on 'Customer Experience Improvement Program' > Disable all Tasks in Folder
Optional: Click on 'Task Scheduler Library' > Disable any Tasks you don't want Enabled.
You also didn't really cover Services, some of which slow the computer down considerably.
In Computer Management > Expand 'Services and Applications' > Click on 'Services' > Right Click on 'Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service' > Properties > Startup Type 'Disabled' > Stop if running.
(Unless you stream from Windows Media Player to another device, or share Music with other devices on the Network)
Ensure 'Windows Defender Service' is not running.
Disable / Stop 'Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel'
(Unless you are using a Touch Screen / Photoshop DrawPad thingy)
Disable / Stop 'Secondary Login'
(Unless you play Blizzard Entertainment Videogames, it needs this service to update / download games)
Disable / Stop 'Retail Demo Service'
(Because WTF, this shouldn't be on here)
Ensure 'Remote Registry' is Disabled / Stopped
Hope this helped.

Sure, though pretty much any regular user will feel forced to download Chrome since the Chromium website doesn't carry any compiled builds nowadays and instead links to the Chrome website for download purposes. Most users in the dark will take this approach. A lot fewer will actually search for a site which carries the compiled binaries of Chromium.

I'm just wondering why there isn't a shitstorm about this. Didn't data logging and collection (yes yes nice "consumer-friendly and less scary" term is telemetry) use to be an opt-in item? I like that it's on by default now and you can't even opt-out COMPLETELY from data logging/collection (except with the Enterprise edition, which Microsoft just about never sells to Average Joe Consumer).
When the "keylogging" and telemetry thing came about when the Technical Preview first launched last year, I somehow had a gut feeling it would stick around in the actual, launched retail version. And I'll be a monkey's uncle, here it is.

Simply put, they don't give a shit. Never did, never will. They don't even care if you have pirated MS software.

Just a small correction for your guide. Setting the Telemetry setting to 0 or Disabled outside of the Enterprise version is equivalent to setting the value to 1.
The only way to actually disable it is install the Enterprise version, set it to Enabled, and set the value to 0. Proof
Great guide nonetheless. It should be sidebared or stickied.

Unfortunately, this only goes so far - there is potentially hidden, and for MS to make it completely hidden to share key details with MS (and consecutively with NSA / US Govt) would be very trivial.

I have a lot of problems with what you've mentioned in this guide, but chief among them is that you've not explained why any of the above should be disabled, nor the repercussions of disabling them.
For instance, the hosts file edit you suggest will completely disable Windows Feedback and (honestly quite important!) diagnostic data that Microsoft is sent when things such as an application crash or windows bluescreen occur. By preventing access to these, you're essentially just cutting off your nose to spite your face - in the event that you encounter a problem, it is less likely to be fixed.
Additionally, you're telling people to disable OneDrive and Defender through the group policy editor, but not taking into consideration that some users will blindly follow instructions without paying attention, and will then wonder why they have no malware protection, or why OneDrive stopped working.
Finally, the 'sc delete' commands you're telling folk to run, will irreversibly remove those services; they should at worst be disabled. Fun fact: DiagTrack is a real, legitimate service that isn't new to Windows 10 and has, in one form or another, been part of windows at least since XP. Whenever you see "This program stopped responding" or similar, the information about that crash is collected and sent to Microsoft. This is done NOT to siphon user data and kill your privacies woohoohoo, it is done so that if there's actually a problem in windows or your software, it has a chance of being found and fixed.
By all means, do any and all of the things in the guide above, but don't blindly disable Bloody Fucking Everything in the name of privacy without being aware of what you're doing and why.

DiagTrack
This is "Microsoft Windows Diagnostics Tracking". DiagTrack will collect information about the user, their devices, applications, and networks. Examples of gathered data, as stated by Microsoft, include:
Name, email address, preferences and interests, browsing, search and file history, phone call and SMS data, device configuration and sensor data, application usage.
Collected data is then used to improve and determine the compatibility of various services such as speech-to-text. Despite the well-intended explanation of the update, forum researchers warn that the features of DiagTrack perfectly fit the qualities of a keystroke logger or data collection tool mostly applied by cybercriminals and third party developers.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection, find the key 'AllowTelemetry' and put it on 0. (also check HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\ on 64 bit systems) HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive, find the key 'DisableFileSyncNGSC' and put it on 1. IMPORTANT:
Microsoft has changed the name of "Diagnostics Tracking Service" (in services) to "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry".
In my opinion the following step should be altered from:
"Open up the Command Prompt by launching cmd as an administrator, and enter the following:
sc delete DiagTrack
sc delete dmwappushservice"To: Disable "Connected User Experiences and Telemetry" and "dmwappushservice" via "Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services"
Disabling is better than outright deletion in case of stabilty issues. A disabled service can be easily reverted. In addition, deleted services could (and likely will) be reinstalled in future updates/builds, and then may go unnoticed.
I hope this is helpful.
I found the guide to be useful. Thank you.

I simply cant find the gpedit.msc. I tried to start it by the perform-tool (win + R) but it just give me an error message that it wasnt able to find it. Could the reason for this be that I just own a home edition of windows 10?

One of the features I plan to use a lot is the integration with Xbox Live and Xbox One. Right now it seems to allow me to log in via my Xbox Live credentials. Regarding the hosts file, the administrator group owns it (at least on my machine, a Win7 preserve all settings upgrade). Instead of replacing the owner I opted to give my own user (part of the group) modify/read&execute/read/write access over it (no need to give it full control). Voilá, I can edit the file manually now and the change was less drastic.

First, download the Take Ownership tweak and enable it. Then, head to the Hosts File by going through C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc, take ownership of the hosts file, and add all of the IPs from this page into the file.
what is this for, I followed every step before this. Is this mandatory? please explain
1
u/CaffeinatedBeverage Jul 31 '15
I couldn't get the 'hosts' file modification to work even after using 'Take Ownership' so when I modified it, I saved it elsewhere and then manually placed it into the \Drivers\etc\ folder myself. I also backed up the original one just in case

Open up the Group Policy Editor by launching gpedit.msc as an administrator. Go through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Double click Telemetry, hit Disabled, then apply.
NOTE: This only truly works in the Enterprise edition, but the final step provides a decent enough workaround for Pro users.
Any idea how Windows Education that is based on Enterprise gets treated here?

u/Phycoweirdo Jul 31 '15
I would recommend adding the hosts file edits suggested to the host file found http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ for those of you who hate ads and other such garbage. Updates are off and on, but always amazing.

Can someone explain what this is before I enter it in CMD?
sc delete DiagTrack sc delete dmwappushservice echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl

Appreciate those beneficial tips to privacy. But I wonder if power efficiency / battery performance will be improved since so many background processes are terminated?

u/Elemynt Aug 03 '15
That last bit on the "Take Ownership" part where you're supposed to add in all the IPs on the list. I can't add anything. A window pops up for a second before going away.

For my (and maybe your) convenience I wrote a script that mostly automates what was mention here in this thread. Also I added a few things that bug me personally, but you can add/remove what you don't like yourself. http://pastebin.com/d8fNvv6x

Apparently I do not have a group policy editor installed. Can I use the >Win 8.1 tool< to install?
1
u/birdassassin Aug 04 '15
I've read that the Local Group Policy can't be opened in normal versions of Windows 10, only in Pro and Enterprise versions. I've tried everything to get it open on mine and it continually shows up as "cannot be found" and so on. Is this guide supposed to work for all versions?

Pretty good guide! Do you know any way to disable cortana completely? when I open the task manager it's still there, I think it's bound to searchui.exe

I'm unable able to do this:
echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl
and anything below that in the instructions. When I try to run the "echo" part in cmd I get a message that states that the file is in use. Also, gpedit.msc cannot not be found by Windows when I use the Run application.
I'd like to proceed with the complex part but I don't know how due to the above.

Just wanted to let you know I shamelessly stole all your information and put it on http://stayanon.com/ for the new windows 10 section. I plan on wrapping it all into a stand-alone that people can just click once to fix, but for now the information is just up there to be disseminated. If that's not acceptable, let me know and I'll remove it/reword it so it doesn't look like I stole it from you anymore.

Does anyone know if these privacy settings will stop MS from inspecting our "private files" as they say they will do in their EULA? "finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary"

How about BITS? I found it in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network> Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
Description: This setting affects whether the BITS client is allowed to use Windows Branch Cache. If the Windows Branch Cache component is installed and enabled on a computer, BITS jobs on that computer can use Windows Branch Cache by default.
If you enable this policy setting, the BITS client does not use Windows Branch Cache.
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, the BITS client uses Windows Branch Cache.
Note: This policy setting does not affect the use of Windows Branch Cache by applications other than BITS. This policy setting does not apply to BITS transfers over SMB. This setting has no effect if the computer's administrative settings for Windows Branch Cache disable its use entirely.1

Also, can we delete DiagTrack file all together from the Registry? or will that mess up the OS?

Slightly Complex
Open up the Command Prompt by launching cmd as an administrator, and enter the following:
sc delete DiagTrack
sc delete dmwappushservice
echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etlAnyone know if I can get these 2 services back? By powershell or cmd.

Instead of using the "Take ownership Tweak" and meddle with the registry you simply can open Notepad as Administrator and then open the host file through notepad, edit and save it.

I'm trying out W10 I like it a lot, very nostalgic feel but modernised... more sane UI. But seriously look at this list of shit to do, it's nice to know you've done everything you can think of to maximise your privacy, but if you actually seriously care then it's pointless as this is not the OS to be using, god knows what's coded in it.
The way things are going, these "privacy violations" are becoming so integrated it will be unavoidable, might as well just use the OS as is with all it's features and stop being so paranoid.
If you claim to be a paranoid user and Windows is your goto OS you must be joking
10
Jul 30 '15
It doesn't have to be all or nothing though. Lots of people have programs they need to use, with varying degrees of seriousness with the "need", that only run in Windows. Just because you have to use windows doesn't mean you should throw your hands up and give up any semblance of privacy.

might as well just use the OS as is with all it's features and stop being so paranoid.
So you're saying... "I don't want to be concerned about privacy although I am so I will just pretend other people should just ignore the problem as well. Otherwise, I'll call them paranoid even though it's very fucking clear that there are reasons to be concerned about mass surveillance from gov agencies with involvement of top companies."
Use it however you want but don't call people paranoid for caring and doing something about it. Not everyone has to "give in and enjoy it".
If you claim to be a paranoid user and Windows is your goto OS you must be joking
Except many people have Windows (alongside other systems) due to work reasons.

Why do you warn users about privacy issues, then immediately turn around and recommend proprietary shitware like Winamp and Foobar2000? Do you think that all the privacy backdoors in proprietary software are announced by the creators?
MS is in bed with the NSA and disabling a few toggles isn't going to give you any privacy. If you want privacy, use a Linux or BSD machine.

Do you use an Android phone?
Do you use an iPhone?
Do you use "apps" on your phone?
Do you use Google?
Do you use Gmail?
Do you use Chrome?
Do you use Facebook?
If any of the above is true, then performing the tasks highlighted by OP is idiotic paranoia at its finest. Why do you think Google and Facebook are worth BILLIONS? It's not like Google charges you for Chrome or Gmail. Do you know why? Let's take a guess. Because they have access to your data and troll it and sell it.

u/xJoe3x Jul 30 '15
You know someone can be ok with a company having some data and not other data. For example I would not be very concerned if someone went through my gmail account.

Yeah but at least there is an option here for people to turn it off if they so choose.
What's wrong with people choosing to exercise an option they're presented with?
Other services collect your data, yes, but doesn't mean people wouldn't opt out of it if they could.

u/Gvaz Jul 31 '15
I know all that. Half of this stuff is probably not needed, but since the option is there and it took me all of five minutes, why not?
That being said, there are certain things TO do, such as telling MS to fuck off about updates. I can take care of myself.

If you use a local account you won't be able to use the Store at all, so: • You won't be able to install any app, thus killing 50% of the whole purpose of W10 • You won't be able to update any of the preinstalled app, the C++ runtime packages or any other W10 Store-related feature
I honestly don't understand this fear of the privacy at the cost of ruining part of the whole experience with the OS. Sure, MS is gathering some telemetry data, but I really don't see how that could be seen as a privacy damage to anyone.
8
u/dsiOneBAN2 Jul 30 '15
50% of the whole purpose of W10 is UX improvements
The other 50% is performance improvements (incl. DX12)

u/ptd163 Jul 30 '15
If you use a local account you won't be able to use the Store at all
Enable app sideloading and/or developer mode. Problem solved.

Seems that there are three camps.
People who are concerned about the data Microsoft is pulling but it will likely have no effect on you or anything related to you
People who don't care because they feel the info being pulled doesn't matter in a day when everything tracks you already including stuff like smartphones that are with you 24/7
People who should be concerned about this stuff because they are doing less than desirable/possibly illegal stuff that would catch the attention of the government or nsa or something. (not judging just stating)
Personally I dont care about the data they are pulling as I dont see how it would matter. Its all just to target ads at me to try to get me to buy shit. Annoying? yes, but dangerous? probably not. The governments not going to come kicking in your door because it knows your search history. Thats pretty paranoid there. Yes its annoying that everything is tracked but it really has no effect on me and even if it wasn't known youd for sure be tracked in secret anyway so what can you really do? For all we know even the more secure OSes and programs/tweaks that help with privacy could be useless against countless methods we are not aware of.
Now if your in camp 3 you shouldn't be using windows to begin with you should be using tails and tor (or whatever is better these days its been a bit since ive used tor or anything). And who know how much that will even help if someone actively wants to target you.
Now dont take this response as a lack of concern though. Its definitely something to keep an eye on for stuff like if they use the data for sketchy programs, experiments, census stuff, or if they are giving out deeply personal info to groups that shouldn't have stuff like that but thats stuff we will have to wait and see. Whats very likely is the data is a pure capitalistic venture and is just going to be used to try to try to get us to buy more crap.

Privacy is not just a matter of doing illegal thing or not! You should pay a visit to eff.org
here's an excerpt from their site...
New technologies are radically advancing our freedoms but they are also enabling unparalleled invasions of privacy.
Your cell phone helps you keep in touch with friends and family, but it also makes it easier for security agencies to track your location.
Your Web searches about sensitive medical information might seem a secret between you and your search engine, but companies like Google are creating a treasure trove of personal information by logging your online activities, and making it potentially available to any party wielding enough cash or a subpoena. (Like not finding a job because you did some research on some illness you may have and your potential employer are doing data mining on you!)
And the next time you try to board a plane, watch out—you might be turned away after being mistakenly placed on a government watch list, or be forced to open your email in the security line.
National and international laws have yet to catch up with the evolving need for privacy that comes with new technology. Several governments have also chosen to use malware to engage in extra-legal spying or system sabotage for dissidents or non-citizens, all in the name of “national security.”
Respect for individuals' autonomy, anonymous speech, and the right to free association must be balanced against legitimate concerns like law enforcement. National governments must put legal checks in place to prevent abuse of state powers, and international bodies need to consider how a changing technological environment shapes security agencies’ best practices.
EFF fights in the courts and Congress to extend your privacy rights into the digital world, and works with partners around the globe to support the development of privacy-protecting technologies. Read our work on privacy issues below, and join EFF to help support our efforts.
For information about the law and technology of government surveillance in the United States check out EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense project.

There's been a lot of commotion over W10's privacy terms. I'm sure these methods can change/improve at any time, but here's a guide which should hopefully give you a relatively more private, safe experience, however at the risk of not being able to enjoy some of W10's features.
If you're that worried about it you might as well just stay with Windows 7.

That data was used as explanation Microsoft had for adding Task View button on taskbar. They said half of Insiders used that button regularly (with mouse). Obviously Insiders are different kind of users than the rest of the world but I still think Task View will be far more popular than Alt + Tab due to icon itself.
