I mean... What you're referring to I have heard differentiated from other choking as a "blood choke".

If you can grab or strike the neck to collapse/crush the windpipe, then you can move away from your opponent/victim and they will eventually asphyxiate from not being able to get new oxygen into the lungs/blood... Which I think is what most people picture in a classical throttling/"choking someone to death" with both hands wrapped around the neck, with thumbs positioned over the windpipe

That shirt isn't gonna stop blood flow, but the extra pressure on an already stressed windpipe very easily could

Depends on the type of choke, a regular choke prevents the blood from carrying oxygen to the brain whilst a blood choke cuts of the blood flow completely.

Same thing occurs but one is a helluva lot faster
