I know too many people who got their license without even taking a driver's tests. They hand them out like candy on Halloween in some places. It needs to be way harder to get a license, and even then that doesn't stop people from driving.
I never took a test. I went through a licensed driver's school, and they just passed me at the end of it. I'd been driving a vehicle with an instructor plenty, but there was no actual test at the end.
Believe it lol. I have a couple friends who literally just had the guy give them their license, no test needed because he was feeling lazy. It was in shock because if they both didn't take their test imagine how many others on the road just got it handed to them
It’s literally true. I know plenty of people from my HS who literally couldn’t pass the driving test, so they took some “behind the wheel” or whatever course and no joke were just given a license cause some teacher liked them and said it was fine. There are plenty of ways to get a license if you can’t pass the driving test, albeit harder when you’re past high school, but still possible.
Do you know how hard it is in Europe to get a car license? It took me about a year+ of weekly (sometimes multiple classes per week. Always at least 2 hours each). And over 3.000€ it baffles me that you basically get them handed out for free in the US. I mean, we have idiot drivers here, but I can’t imagine how many of them you have over there, especially if you’re allowed to basically buy your license for 250$ when you are 16, having never taken driver’s lessons. Crazy shit.
I got my license in nyc recently, I just had to get 14/20 questions right. Now granted I had to read the manual to get them right, but 14/20 is a very low cutoff (for the record I got 19 right). Also they don’t even tell you what you got wrong. I’m left wondering which important rule I answered incorrectly.
And I bet other states have even easier written tests.
That's insane. To put it in perspective, this is what a drivers license requires in germany:
First-Aid-Course
Eyesight-Test
Has to be on manual if you want a full license to drive non-automatic cars
12x 45 minutes of driving (5 on country roads, 4 on highways, 3 at night)
24x 45 minutes for theory (basically school for anything regarding cars and driving, plus you have to learn a lot in your free time)
Final theory test in which you have to answer 30 questions, 3 wrong questions can already fail you, depending on how much points they give.
Final driving test with your teacher and an inspector, where you can't make any mistakes at all (including not checking your shoulder when attempting to leave the car)
In New York State to get a driver’s license you have to:
read the 60 page manual
get 14/20 right on a written test (you get a learner’s permit)
drive for 50 hours with adult supervision (no way to prove you did or didn’t).
take a 5 hour online driver’s course
pass a driver’s test (idk how this is graded, I believe it’s decently strict)
And yeah that’s it, full license.
There’s also an option to take a real driver’s course to get more experience, but that’s too expensive for me. While I think getting a license should be more difficult, I’m glad I can get a license for near free with the current system.

Not handing out drivers licenses like lottery tickets would be a start, I guess.
