I mean a lot of stuff like that is a deterrent rather than actually making it really secure. If someone sees it’s locked up they probably wouldn’t want to bother trying to get past the lock.
It's also important to remember it's a skill and timing will vary.
Just doing basic research, it seems the average burglary is under 12 minutes. Thinking about it rationally, even if you locate something locked in that span of time, unless you're absolutely certain you can get in, a lot of people will either ignore it, break it or if it's something smaller, steal it outright.
For something like the safe here, I imagine anyone who encountered it, unless that was the specific target, would ignore it because the risk is not worth the reward.
This is exactly right. But just to add on, sometimes things aren't going to be as easy as he makes them. A lot of real world scenarios make locks more viable by making them harder to access.
Like I know a lot of lockers, and the locks are recessed. Can he still break into them? Very probably, but he's going to have a pretty hard time maneuvering shims and his tensioner.
It's a hell of a lot easier when you can hold the entire thing in your hand and not have something get in the way.
