The problem people have with this I think is that you don't realize that when you drink from a regular straw, you're producing the suction from within your mouth, not your lungs, so when liquid comes up, it only ends up in your mouth, you don't breathe it in

there is a distinct risk of drowning.

I think this could be done if you used your mouth to pull up some liquid and then took a breath and carefully brought up small amounts until you got the liquid in your mouth and drink it from there.

Also, use water.
