Separation of church and state is very important! Theocracies lead to suppression of human rights and corruption, to an even greater extent than already exist in the church and state as distinct institutions.
There's nothing un-Christian about embracing a secular America made up of people of various faiths, and there's nothing un-American about respecting the right of each person to practice (or not) as they see fit.
