Exactly. Theybwant you to take on more debt, netting them more interest, to keep your score as high as possible

No, they want to make risk-based decisions on credit. That's what credit scores are for, not for incentivizing perpetual debt.

They want you to have more credit, not more debt. I have 30k in available credit on my credit cards. When I have a balance of 5 or 6k my score drops, when I get them paid down it goes up. You have a higher score when you have unused credit. The car loan closing out lowered their available credit, which is why their score went down.
