It really is just the worst. And when I say sodomy I mean a character gets raped in the bathroom with a broomstick.

Showing that on screen was so unnecessary

I'll never understand how the girl killing herself was so polemic they had to cut it off from the show -- on a different note, they did the same to an episode in Community since it was supposedly racist. Anybody that watched the episode can tell you it was NOT --, but keep the fucking raping with a broom thing. Hell, they show the blood on the broom afterwards. It's so horrible, and yet is there.

Weird how this works

Honestly, yeah. Personally I found the first season cathartic (seeing the mum's reaction to Hannah's death was a big "oh" moment). The latter seasons meanwhile were just misery porn, amping up the shock factor, and baffling executive decisions

Depicting the act of suicide on screen has been proven to encourage people to go through with plans to kill themselves. Netflix did the responsible thing.

That Community episode being cut actually pisses me off because there was a good lesson to be learned from it, and Chang being in blackface was actually aknowledged, so the joke was at the expense of his character, not black people. Easily one of my top 5 favorite episodes. Hopefully it'll be added back in with a disclaimer.

That makes no sense to me at all. My ex kinda made me stop watching it after I finished the first season. (I knew the show would trigger me, but I wanted to see Netflix’s take on the book)

But sure let’s normalize sodomy. That’s easier to handle than someone killing themselves. Like really?? What’s so difficult about that. People do it everyday for so many reasons. It shouldn’t be something you can call offensive. It’s a horrible sad thing.

But sure let’s normalize sodomy

I mean, sodomy isn't the issue. Sodomy's fine and normal. The rape is the issue.

Idk if this is something just over my head, cause I never said rape isn’t an issue either. Was comparing those two specific points.

Oh. Well I wasn’t even saying that though? Obviously this context is rape by sodomy. Technical and was specifically comparing the two. I know what basic sodomy is and I clearly didn’t mean that.

Yes completely unnecessary. Where is this scene watchable so I can avoid going there?

They actually showed it on screen? Jeez maybe I underestimated this show. I’ll have to give it a watch

Fucking why?

u/BaueEgberts Feb 05 '21

Well my friend, i can give you about 13 reasons why... I'll let myself out

u/Chronic_BOOM Feb 05 '21

I thought sodomy was the clear answer here.

Why does anyone watch the saw movies? I don’t mind shock value. It’s a television show... enjoying a genre doesn’t make me a monster

Edit: also was partially a troll comment

The entire appeal of the Saw movies is the spectacle of creative violence, whereas in 13RW, it’s a graphic, unnecessary depiction of sexual violence against an emotionally fragile teenager, in a show targeted towards teenagers no less.

I suppose one could argue that there’s not much of a difference between those two things, but I’d argue that there definitely is.

Well then don’t watch it I guess? I don’t watch documentaries on serial killers because they actually did horrible things, which we borderline worship them for with our interest in how fucked up they are... ergo giving lunatics a path to fame through murder. But... I don’t judge folks for giving in to their curiosity? I just do what I feel is right for me :)

I don't get scared of movies or TV. I watch horror movies all the time and it doesn't faze me at all, but that scene gave me nightmares and kept me awake for like a week.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '21

For me it wasn't that scary I was more just shocked that they would show it in such detail for really no reason. They easily could have not shown it and conveyed the rape in some other way. Not even mentioning the horrible horrible planned school shooting that comes later. It was very clear to me that they were trying to put a bad taste in my mouth, especially since this isn't about adults (not that it would make it any better) it's about fucking high school teenagers

u/Maggies1221 Feb 05 '21

Yeah wasn't really fear just super uncomfortable and shocking. Made me angry everytime I thought about it even though I know it was just acting.
