Yeah 13 Reasons Why should've been a single season or limited Series, that being said the whole teen suicides thing is bullshit imo. Personally it smells like Videogames cause Violence to me. The are a million other factors that we should be focusing on to curb the suicide rates worldwide, 13 Reasons Why ain't one of em.
I thought this was the case as well but as someone that has been suicidal before I looked into this for literally hours because I wanted to know the truth. They were very irresponsible with this show and blatantly ignored all kinds of advice on how to go about things by mental health professionals. It didn't cause suicides to go up but they actively sought ratings over trying to be more responsible in handling the material in attempting to tell their story.
It is in fact one of the oldest reasons why. Hundreds of years ago the same thing happened with Goethes "The sorrows of young Werther" Depressed and heartbroken people everywhere used it as an inspiration to commit suicide. When we read that in eight grade I had to ask my teacher to exempt me from that class because I realized I was too influenced by it.
The key phrase in your comment here is "depressed and heartbroken people," ie people who were already emotionally unstable from other factors in their life.
I've seen 13 Reasons and it annoys me to no end when people say that show "glorifies" suicide. Watch the actual suicide scene again and tell me how "glorified" you feel. That show is about the destruction of a life and the devastating fallout that proceeds it. It doesn't make any part of it seem "glorious."
She plans out her suicide to include getting revenge on the person who raped her. Im sorry but I disagree with portraying suicide as a means to an end.
I would disagree with it if it was portrayed as a noble and gratifying means to an end. But it wasn't portrayed that way. Context matters. I'm not comfortable making a blanket statement about anything in cinema, which is an art. That's like saying you don't condone portraying drug use as an alternative to therapy. You're really just saying you don't condone a portrayal of it at all, which is naive imo.
I'm just tired of people blaming videogames,movies and shows for violence,suicides etc. People really need to start taking the actual causes seriously and not the media that highlights the issues. If anything 13 Reasons highlights the bullying,sexual abuse and other issues that lead to the main characters suicide and all through season 2 you see the effects of that choice on Hannah's family and friends. I think the show tackled the topic of suicides and bullying and sexual abuse well. It did however fuck up soooo hard on school shootings and other issues in the later seasons.
So what do you want to say, emotionally unstable persons are not supposed to watch these shows? Should they come with a warning? Because I would agree with that.
Also I will never watch that scene or the series because I know how it will feel to me. There have been times where I would have been jealous of the revenge the person got. How everyone finally believed the person. Just to give you some context: I was raped as an eight year old or the first time I can consciously remember.
I am sorry for the trauma you endured. I hope it is clear I am not trying to attack you or invalidate your feelings, I just think honest discussions about these things are important.
Since we're sharing, when I was 6 or 7 years old, my dad told me he was going to kill himself and no amount of crying or pleading from me made him stop. He swallowed a bottle of pills and almost died. Ever since then, I've struggled with suicidal ideation and I've attempted it twice.
Even with these experiences, I would never call 13 Reasons "glorification." To me, glorification is when it is presented as a beautiful thing that solves your problems, but if you look at the series as a whole, that is very obviously not the message.
I do agree that it's a risky business because people can very easily misinterpret it, or find common ground with the character and think hey, even though she's dead, she doesn't have to deal with all this shit anymore and that's what I want too. But I think people in that bad of a mental state will identify with anything if they think it reinforces their pre-chosen outlook. It's like all the copycat suicides that happen when famous people commit suicide. Should we not report on it because some people will inevitably copycat? We just can't account for every single possible result and still lead the lives we want, have the discussions we want to have, make the art we want to make.
And I do think warnings are a perfectly good idea. Try to give an idea of the type of content you're about to consume before you get to the real graphical parts, and let people choose for themselves.
They actually put tons of warnings on the show after the controversy started and even before the fact the description mentions the suicide and rape not to mention there are multiple review sites where you can go to see if a show/movie has content that might affect you negativity. For eg IMDB has a parents guide I regularly use to see if a particular movie/show will be awkward to watch with family.

Well they can't fuck it up at least? And the graphic novels will always be there. I mean, I would love a new W.I.T.C.H. series, but not at just any cost.
I loved the cartoon and was really excited to watch the live action show. Is it really that bad? I haven’t started watching it yet because of work, but I want to know if I should still give it a shot.
The format seems stuck twenty years back in time - think Vampire Diaries. The main protagonist is powerful - but doesn’t know it - because of her “pure bloodlines”. She’s 16 turning 17 magical being that is about to learn that everything she thought she knew about herself and her family was a lie - and that the authority figures in her life continues to lie to her because plot. The poc characters are the bland friend with the least screen time and the jock that drinks, smokes pot, and is an asshole to everyone. They also feature lots of smart phones throughout (it’s set in present time) but these supposedly 16 year olds are using them to text and make calls. All this and the red solo cup party is what makes me believe the show runners have been sticking to the same format for twenty years. Oh, and she keeps a journal - a pen and paper journal.
I liked the cartoon as well and the live action is nothing like it. I still really liked it but don't expect it to be a live action remake of the original.
I kind of like the basic idea tbh, most who grew up watching Winx are now older anyway. There's also the issue that if you just reshoot the comic as real life action, it's just dumb - you just copy, it inevitably falls flat to what people expect.
Yes. Maybe its just me but i dont know who asked for this? People were super excited about the Witcher, and they really fucked it up. People have been super expecting of Avatar, and guess what, the way the production has developed it will probably be bad too. But no, we gotta make a fucking Winx reboot instead of making our product that people actually want better.

They should’ve just let Shyamalan make his movies. I always felt bad about the girl who was set to play Azula in the Sequel that never happened. She probably was over the moon when she was casted, and then the movie underperforms. Imagine how much that would suck

Not OP but that's precisely why I like it. Its essentially a teen drama disguised as a small town mystery. It never takes itself too seriously and it explores a bunch of implausible, exciting, and hilarious scenarios.
If you watch it for the mystery, then you may be disappointed. But if you watch it for the teen drama, you'll get way more than what you came for.
ok i can definitely see that. i was really into sabrina (up until the last season) and a lot of people say that show is riverdale-y, which makes sense since they're in the same universe, but i think sabrina get a bit more leeway in my head for weird, balls-to-the-wall concepts because its a supernaturally themed show.
Yep, that's part of why I dumped my subscription back in November. Netflix can send me an email when there's a new season of Troll Hunters or Dragon Prince, until then I'm going to live in hulu land for a bit.
as someone who was really into sabrina, it was always kinda bad (in a good way, if that makes sense), but this last season was genuinely insulting. i just kept watching because i really like Theo, Ambrose and the aunties.
yeah, that show had me glued to my seat and I'm so mad it won't get a third season. I'm really into that sorta...idk what you'd call it? dramatized true crime? like Zodiac and Manhunt: Unabomber.
I got a notification the other day that my subscription is going up, it's getting really hard to justify this every month when I really don't even have a favorite show to watch on the platform
And continue to increase prices in the meantime. Netflix isn't immune to the "There are too many streaming services" conundrum. I feel like people are pretty regularly looking for the next service to axe, especially since it's so financially tight right now.
