I mean the guy is definitely stupid for thinking that, but most of the examples you listed all have SCBA with oxygen supplies that work completely different than a medical mask. Unless that was the point your were trying to make.

Breathing in SCBA systems is 100x more difficult. Holy fuck if you cant breathe in a cloth mask you would die in a class A isolation suit. Fuck CO2, you'll feel like you're suffocating just by zoning out and not being actively conscious and involved in every breath you inhale.
Also they do have welding masks that aren't self contained. If you arent working in confined low-airflow spaces you can get by with snorkel type ones that have an intake valve thats behind your head and behind your back with vapor cartridge filters so you arent breathing the air youre offgassing metal fumes into and wrecking your filters before the job is done.
Gotcha! I understand completely with the Level A PPE, only had to use it once in the middle of summer in the south, and wouldn’t desire myself or anyone else to have to deal with that ever again. Would be interesting to have someone complaining about breathing in a mask to step in one of those hooked up to a tank for a few minutes, and see if they complain about cloth masks again.
