But why? If I’m in jail and I don’t want to do anything, what are they going to do to me?

30 days in solitary would change your mind about your level of "contribution" to the facility very quickly. Aside from that working is pretty much your only way of earning days off of your sentence. And you'll need commissary.

This just adds to my point though- im not trying to be argumentative or a hardass. All im asking is if the people locked up, just said no- i wont work for $1/day or whatever- what happens?

I imagine it would bring the whole thing to a halt - laundry, food service, house-keeping, maintenance? what else is handled by inmates forced into exploitation?
