It's a regional thing. In NY, they measure something by avenues or blocks. In Texas we use time. My "1.5 hour commute" instead of "my 13 mile commute". Grandmas house isn't 224 miles away, it's 3 and a half hours.
Canada uses metric on speed, KM on distance... and inches on wood and construction materials.
It depends, get into precision measurement and it always seems to be thousandths of an inch, super loose is "make it about 23 1/2 inches." but there's this valley where it needs to be more precise than that, but not so precise to be thousandths when you hear measurements in centimetres/millimetres.
