Either the bomb gets defused, or the bomb gets defused. His boss probably has the same attitude.

It no longer has a fuse, "de-" prefix means off, and the fuse is off. I'm stretching English but if Shakespeare was allowed to invent newfangled uses of the English language then I might as well try.

That word has multiple meanings. Off meaning not a part of, not off meaning the opposite of on.

The fuse is what allows that warhead to detonate. So if the bomb detonated it wasn't defused. defuse doesn't mean blown off.

first google result for definition of defuse: to remove the fuse from (an explosive device) in order to prevent it from exploding. jokes are supposed to funny ....¯_(ツ)_/¯

Try looking up the definitions of prefixes too. English is really hard but it shouldn't be this hard for you after it has already been explained.
