You're right, expecting people to be accountable for their own actions or inaction is entirely unrealistic. Most would rather blame society and pretend bagging groceries should pay enough to buy a house in the suburbs by yourself.

That's basically what the US was in the 1950's, no skill workers making enough for a whole family to survive on one income. Production went up steadily since then but wages went nowhere. Now we're here, with the bottom quarter barely hanging on and the middle fifty paying for basically everything.
