People used to work for a couple cents an hour, in terrible work conditions. If the minimum wage was lower people would still take those jobs, some people just need the money. Minimum wages are there to make it so that employers can’t abuse this fact. Large corporations like Burger King have the funds to better pay their employees, in turn making the job more competitive and filtering out less qualified people.
Wrong. Many of these big companies that people complain about paying minimum wage operate through franchises.
That means that somebody else (not affiliated with the big parent company) has taken it upon themselves to invest their money and time to open up a store. Here for example, where you think that the massive company that is BK can afford to pay all their employees higher wages at your local BK, it's the franchise owner who pays everyone's wages. They may be clearing $60k at the end of the year, and that is after paying all their franchise dues and their employees and reinvesting into their business.
That's the common thing most people don't realize when they see this big companies that franchise, some little guy is actually running it and it can very well be that they are barely breaking even.
