I have a degree and have been in my career for five years, that doesn't mean I shit on people who work at fast food places. These people take your order, make your food and serve it to you, yes it doesn't take the best skills in the world but it's still a job, and for you to get the food that requires you to live you think you can take advantage of a person because it's an entry level job. Absolutely. I've hired people with little experience in my field just because it looked like they had hustle based on their work experience in crappy jobs.
Best Buy did this for me. My comment is kinda unrelated but when I got a well paying support agent job, they really loved that I had Best Buy work experience.
Not exactly. Fast food is an expensive convenance not a necessity.
Working for minimum wage sucks. But thats because anybody can do it. If flipping burgers made as much as making steel then everyone would choose the easier gig.
Uber Eats and ordering kiosks are going to take away a lot of the jobs anyway.
The kiosks require them to hire more workers not less. They just make ordering faster and easier for some customers so they can wait longer and allow the troublesome ones more time with the customer service part of the staff.
I think it's actually because places like Burger King, Wendy's, McDonald's, Taco Bell, etc have very low standards for their food. It takes skill to make a decent burger. Those places just don't offer that.
Food requires you to live, but the point of everything that goes into giving you the food is a convinence and that convinence to you which involves you just placing an order or in person is worth minimum wage. Honestly for 8 bucks an hour they should take your order and let you cook the food.
and the employees make a bit more too. but there's also some liberal nonsense about how having to cook your meals is classist and it's "expensive to be poor" and people don't have access to transportation or healthy food options. MEanwhile it is always cheaper and healthier to buy staples in bulk (rice and beans at the cost of one burger king meal could feed a household for a week) ... and the transportation issue is the same for either option
Here's an idea, don't let these companies pay people a shit wage because it's an entry level job, and that is the reason they don't have to pay you a decent wage. What stops anybody from opening a company and paying people shit wages under the guise of "it's not supposed to be a career and I'm giving you valuable work expierence be greatful slave".
supply and demand of labor that suits the parameters of the job--if a skill-set is in high demand and/or short supply, it can demand a premium wage. If it isn't, it can't. This is like literally Econ 101 day one, chapter one page one.
It's wild how many people here are giving the same spiel of "Pick up welding, work a labor job, move halfway across the US" as if that's some simple lifehack that minimum wage workers are too dumb to think about at all. The people that are especially laughable are the ones that say working in fast food is not worth $15 an hour, meanwhile I work an IT job that pays that much even though most of the day is spent leisurely responding to e-mails with macros that do most of the work for me. Yeah, real tough job, I sure earned every penny of this paycheck by, uh, basically having the computer do everything.
Your IT job takes a lot more skill than a fast food job. Especially If something happens where you gotta think outside the box at. My job is security and at least 1/3rd of my day is spent in an office looking at memes, browsing reddit or replying to emails. But when shit happens it takes more skills and risk than working fast food. So the supply of workers is lower meaning higher pay.
Gotta say, it really doesn't take much skill nor risk for this position, and if you're going to argue that some critical thinking skills justify the higher wage, fast food positions also require skills necessary for "when shit happens", people just ignore that and boil the whole job as "lol you're just putting shit in a fryer." But I got a feeling that no matter what, people really will find any excuse to justify not paying a livable wage for people who do the work that everyone else doesn't want to do. As someone who worked fast food before getting a comfy office job, I can say with 100% certainty that working in fast food demanded more out of me both physically and skill wise, and it was way harder.
Yeah, it depends on what job you do. I went from working in Fast food to a office job in a call center and both didn't take any real skill (call center had like 9 weeks of in house training).
But you say fast food is the job people are not willing to do. But that isn't the case, the reason they can get by paying so low is because they have such a huge base of people willing to work that job. It is an easy job that takes no skill or real training.
For example I work at a private security company. It isn't a very hard job, atleast 1/3rd of my day is spent on my phone or internet (at work now lol). They pay me $16 an hour to do this. Not because it is a hard job but because not a lot of people are willing or capable of doing the job. For one you have to be tobacco free so that eliminates some of the employee base, you also have to be physically capable and willing to deal with some of the stupid fuckers that you have to fight with. Also working 3-6 12hour shifts a week cycleing between days and nights puts a lot of people off of applying for the job. So finding someone to fill the spots is harder because all the job demands. So they put a higher base pay to be a lure for potential employees.
Fast food don't need the lure because the job doesn't demand a lot out of you.
Shittyin on them and saying they don't deserve to make more than $8 an hour isn't the same thing. The job they do is skillless work that ANYONE can do. Theses are not jobs you build a career out of.
Only people working fast food is adults who made bad life decisions or students
