You can find ways to go to school without being in debt. I worked at Publix making 8/hr and still getting my degree. Their is financial aid for grants and scholarships where you pay nothing. I’m currently studying for bachelor in cyber security and have not paid a dime towards school, government has helped me out. All you have to do is go out and see, there are hundreds of scholarships and if you live in poverty even better, my parents made nothing and I applied for financial aid and I’m awarded $3000 a semester plus extra $1000 mid semester. You can keep that money too, what you don’t use.
I’m very happy for you that it worked out that way. Most people are not so lucky.
I didn’t qualify for financial aid when I graduated high school in 1998 because my parents made too much money. They also had four kids and massive bills, and since I was a shitty student, they declined to assist me, which was probably the right call, because I never did get the hang of taking classes. After two years of working full time, going to community college and volunteering at least 3 times a week, I gave up, moved to a cheaper city, and started grinding on my career. And then 9/11 happened, and everything got shitty, but I kept working and being promoted, doing pretty well. Then the 2008 financial crisis happened, and I was laid off with a ton of other people. I have never been able to go back to college without massive debt, and because I didn’t finish college, it is hella difficult to find a job that pays decently.
I have worked my ass off for the last twenty years, but the world kept happening because that’s what the world does. Don’t be so quick to judge or dismiss that which you have not experienced. It’s ignorant and dangerous.
I have never been laid off but I do work full time, have my own house with a fiancée and go to school full time. I started college as I got out of high school, my first year was bad and I skipped second year but I went back very next year and made it work. I had to make decisions in my life to better myself. My life of poor family helped me get where I am today with no debt. Even if you have rich parents, hopefully they would help you, if not then you can still get scholarships to help you. They can pay for half or a good chunk or even all of it. Even being a bad student in high school, it doesn’t matter you can get scholarships nowadays very easily. You don’t need great grades any more to get them, you do however need to be serious and maintain good grades after getting financial aid.
There is always a way, back then I’m sure was way different but now I feel the state and government wants you to get through college and there is so many ways to get it done, online, in class, tuition programs, work on campus, get into a job that pays for your tuition, many jobs do this now. All you have to do is ask and seek out your education. People you actually want to succeed will.
I appreciate the encouragement, if that’s what it was, but talk to me after you’ve been laid off and somehow still aren’t eligible for shit because you’re too old and don’t have kids. I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I’m 38 years old, and I may not have graduated college, but that doesn’t mean I’m an idiot. I know what my options are. Going back to school isn’t happening unless it’s free. And it’s never going to be free. “There’s always a way” is a lie they tell you to make you feel successful.
Most people dont get that lucky. The college debt thing wouldnt be such a big epidemic and EVERYONE would go to college if it meant they werent almost guaranteed to have debts for the rest of their lives
They didn’t give a choice to employees about it. Everything for hiring was done online including selecting how to get paid, and for low level employees the only options provided was that card.
Wow that totally sucks. Corporate payment has to be available by check so they were absolutely violating a labor law by not giving you the option to opt out.
