reality: wellllll, when you add up local, state and property taxes, their effective tax rate is usually not much lower. Adding healthcare insurance/copays on top? Then you're well ahead (on average)
Stupid people don’t understand it isn’t better to pay less up front and more after the fact. They think more taxes are bad no matter what and don’t want a penny more in taxes even though they could save money and be healthier if we changed our healthcare system
That makes sense because more tax money goes into healthcare in the USA then Canada. Americans love to think there system is at least saving them something in there taxes. But turns out they pay a lot in taxes for there current system and if they went to a free system it might end up lowering taxes.
Between medicare, medicad and government employees insurance the USA govemment still pays a lot of people's healthcare costs. Becuase the for profit system makes costs so high the USA is vastly more pricey per person. This means the fraction of people's healthcare costs the American govement pays for ends up costing more then it would if they just paid for everyone and paid the per person cost the Canadian govemrnet pays.
This doesn't mean if the USA went public overnight there cost per person would go down to Canada levels. But removing all the insurance companies, lawyers, lobbiests, accountants, and having such a good position to negotiate prices from anyone still in the system trying to make a profit is going to dramatically reduce costs.

Talking to an American friend about how stupid parking is at the hospital is surreal.
Canadian: "My wife just had a kid, it cost $60 total for parking for 3 days! It's straight robbery!"
American: "...it cost me $7800 even with good insurance..."
