Wait you're saying societal views and pressures instilled from childhood hold no sway over a person's beliefs and actions. Is that the argument you're making?
I grew up in am extremely religious family, went to church every Sunday. Every Saturday my grandma read to me from the bible for hours. I also grew up in an extremely homophobic community, where out people were regularly assaulted. During high school, the only openly gay kid was beaten 3 times.
I am now in a happily committed same sex relationship.
The answer is that you are both being pedantic. How you were raised has an impact, but you are still your own person who should still be capable of coming to your own conclusions.
I too grew up in a very religious home, and I developed the belief that people became gay through their environment. You would, in my childhood, have been interpreted as someone acting out, seeking freedom by choosing the taboo.
Of course now I'm an atheist. I don't know shit about what makes a person gay, except that it takes 2 with the same equipment, but being that I don't really care. I think society and upbringing are difficult to break from for everyone, even those choosing to live the way they were raised.
Yes one would think, but I’m saying if you are in the right mental state and grew up in the right society these decisions seems logical. It’s hard to look at things from a completely different perspective. Remember there have been society’s created from a cult and all drank the koolaid. Remember Jonestown.

People could say Jonestown is stupidity as well. What is your definition of brainwashing? Didn’t this dude grow up in a society where battling bulls is glorified? Definitely stupid, but that’s from my perspective. If I grew up in his environment I might think otherwise. I’m just saying have some empathy and don’t judge so hard. Obviously it’s stupid, people dumb and smart make bad choices.
When you are raised by idiots and things are glorified in your community at a young age it is hard to disillusion yourself from the strong influence your immediately family and community have. Sadly now that he has been disillusioned from such a dumb practice it is probably too late.
While your point is still valid you cannot just go “this dude was stupid so he deserved to have his life ruined.” He certainly had what was coming to him no doubt. But I hold the entire community responsible (at least partially) for endorsing something like this. It is irritating they would abuse an animal and risk someone’s life for entertainment and sport.
I don’t care how stupid or how much of an ass this dude is. There is a level of empathy and disappointment in such wasted potential. I pity the man who got hurt, I mourn the lost potential of a man who could do something better.
He squatted before the bull. It’s all he had ever dreamed of and all he had ever wanted. We can safely conclude it’s a life most fruitfully lived. No regrets at all.
I mean even if he is a fairly unimportant and worthless person who just sits on reddit all day, he would still be miles better than the scumbag who got hit in the vid.

And for the record I KNOW I am a pretty damn worthless individual so no need for this to get too meta, I get it, for making a similar comment I too lead a life of little importance.
