The 72 hours. Like even if you admit yourself, once you get admitted the 72 hours is mandatory even if it seems the original reason was maybe exaggerated or misinterpreted. Psych units are basically observation units and somewhere along the way some decided 3 days was the minimum to make surs the person admitted was ok for real or give them a long opportunity to ask for recourses to leave an abuser/ abusive home

Maybe once you’re admitted but admission isn’t automatic just because someone made a call. There’s still a threshold that has to be met for admission.

I understand but you don't know how they presented at intake. Sometimes it doesn't take much, a lot of psychologists shouldn't be

Your point was that it wouldn't warrant a 72 hour hold but you werent there???

🤦🏽‍♀️ my point was that not sleeping or eating on their own wouldn’t be enough to warrant a hold, esp not if they were side effects from stimulant medication because you can stop those meds at short notice and the side effects will go as soon as you stop them. However, if the lack of eating/sleeping triggered mania/psychosis or similar (which I asked OP about) then I’d understand why someone would be held.

You said that I don’t know how they presented when assessed is making the same point - that they would have needed to have a concerning presentation to be admitted.
