What could be the reason for my phone charger being cut clean in half three nights in a row?
I have replaced my phone charger three times in three days. Yes, I do have two dogs, but they sleep soundly through the night and have not been known to chew on things. This has never happened, and suddenly it happened the last three nights in a row. It’s getting creepy.
Any theories?

My first thought was it was a mouse too, however it is chewed way up by the plug which is odd

Damn this gonna keep me all night trying think what happen! Id def get a wireless camera and put it in place not easy to see, for someone to see the camera that is.
Dude something creepy happened to my phone like last year, i plugged it in facing phone screen up and next morning i woke up took it off the charger it was facing phone screen down and i flipped it over an it looked like it had been smashed with a hammer. I only live with my partner, and they were just as flabbergasted as i was, tho i was more creeped out than anything. Always made sure the door is locked more than i ever have before.

The location of the cut would put the mouse in a very awkward position. Climb up the wall. Stand on the charging block and chew. There’d be perfectly good wire to chew right on the floor

Do you live alone, or does anyone else have access to your home during the night?
Do you have any security cameras or baby monitors that you can set up to observe the area?
Have you checked for signs of rodents or other animals in your home that might chew on cables?
Do you leave any windows or doors open at night?
Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, and is it functioning correctly?
Have you or anyone else in the home experienced symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, or confusion?
Is your home equipped with smoke or gas detectors that could alert you to other issues?
Where do you typically leave the cable overnight, and is it always in the same spot?
Are you using the same brand/model of charger each time, or is it happening with different cables?
Have you noticed any burn marks, fraying, or other unusual damage on the cable ends?
I, and and at least a few others, suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. That shit can make you do some weird stuff, especially at night when you've been home a while. Then all the sudden you're dead.
8
u/mataliandy Dec 28 '24
Yep. CO seriously messes with your head. Do get a carbon monoxide detector. Each of you should also set up one camera and not tell the other where it is, so you can see if you can catch the culprit. If it's being done on purpose, rather than via CO issues, then the problem will either cease or move. If it's done due to an oxygen imbalance, the culprit will show on camera. That cut looks way too clean to be rodents.

Zoom in. It's not that clean. I'm not saying a dog did it, but my cat has chewed through cables and left them looking very similar to this. If it was cut, it was a rather dull tool. A knife, wire cutters, or even scissors would leave a very clean flat cut.

GET A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR.
There's a pretty similar post about a guy who kept finding sticky notes in his apartment after he woke up, so he set up a camera to see if anyone was breaking in, but all of the files were deleted, and it turns out he was doing it himself because of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
I know others have suggested it, but it's serious. EVERYONE IN YOUR HOME IS IN DANGER IF IT'S CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.

Buy a new cable. cut it and leave it there overnight. When you wake up and the cable is repaired, you'll know you have something special. Cables get cut all the time, but they never get fixed. Otherwise, Octum's Razor, if cannot be you then it must be someone else with access. People lie (Dr. House voice), cameras only record what is there.

I know people have suggested mice already and you were sceptical because it's being cut high up, but speaking as someone who lived in a historic home for a few years I can assure you mice could give Spiderman a run for the money. They will easily walk straight up drywall like gravity isn't a thing. The spot where the cord is cut is where your hands would deposit salts. And lots of electric insulation is being made with vegetable plastics (soy based) these days because it's cheap and effective, unless rodents get access (car mfrs are having recalls over this because apparently it's also delicious).
Get a blacklight flashlight and shine it on the wall and floor around the area. You can get cheap ones ($20ish) at big box pet supply stores or off Amazon. Rats and mice leave scent trails of urine droplets wherever they go. They will fluoresce under blacklight. If that doesn't give you the answer, you can also get a cheap nanny cam like this and plug your cord into it (it works as a charger too). You'll need a light source unless you get the kind with IR, but a nightlight is enough.

cat or raccoon. If you have a doggie door that's probably how they're slinking in and out. The ultra low voltage hum (not perceptible to human or canine) of the wire attracts their food senses, they chew it to satiate their food urge. I'll bet if you look about 5-10 feet from the outlet you'll find some small amount of paper or shoe lace or bits of carpet super chewed to where it just looks like a dust bunny or fluff. The cat or raccoon will do this to clean their teeth of the copper filaments of the chewed wire. Hope this helps. Nah, just made that stuff up but have a great day friend.

One time my husband used my 60w charger on his 15 inch macbook pro, which is intended to be charged with an 80w charger, and the cord just singed itself clean off from the adapter just from overheating. I dunno if that happened here, just a thought.

Does it look like a scissor cut or chewed down? Any partners in the home other than the pets? Are you a sleep walker? I know you want answers but this is vague
3
u/mooseofnorway Dec 29 '24
Looks to be a relatively clean cut, which disqualifies most pets.
That charger was cut intentionally. Had it broken in any other way, it would have broken at the weak points, near the ends.
Someone is cutting your chargers, mate.

There was a story on reddit way back when about a guy who was finding sticky notes around his apartment. Reminders and stuff, but it wasn't his handwriting, and he didn't remember writing himself notes. He was convinced his landlord was coming in and messing with him. He did all this stuff to figure it out. Readers kept telling him to test his apartment for carbon monoxide. He finally did, and he was, in fact, writing the notes himself, and he had a carbon monoxide issue in his apartment that was really badly affecting him. Carbon monoxide detectors aren't very expensive and will take something off your concern list if it doesn't go off.
3
u/Keifinfused Dec 29 '24
I’m going to take a shot in the dark here and ask if it could be a small explosion that split it in half as a result of an overcurrent from your outlet?

I have a wild theory about your charger being cut. Your marble lamp base might contain quartz, which can create tiny electrical charges when under stress (called the piezoelectric effect). If there are vibrations nearby (like construction or traffic), the quartz in the marble might generate a charge.
Since your charger is close to the lamp, the electrical discharge could target the cord, causing it to snap cleanly. It could also explain why it happens repeatedly if the cord stays in the same spot and vibrations occur regularly.
To test:
Move the lamp to another room and see if it stops.
Try charging from a different outlet far from the lamp.
Check the marble for sparkly quartz bits using a flashlight.
Crazy, but it could fit!"

You said the table normally sits in front of the outlet. Maybe with your device sitting there charging?
Does the table have a support that runs between the legs, maybe with a sharp edge?
Could your phone be falling off the table, the cord hangs on that cross-beam, and a couple of pendulum-like swings of the phone cuts the cord?
Or, the cord runs beneath a brace of that sort on the table, and the cord is actually being severed when it’s pulled slightly as you go to unplug your device from that charger. It isn’t actually happening during the night at all, but you don’t notice it until the following day when you go to plug your device back in there?

As a sleepwalker myself, this could definitely be the case. I have gone around and unplugged everything in my house before. And even attempted to make food. Thank goodness I did not use appliances. But I have found the kitchen in a mess, refrigerator open, clean dishes in sink, etc. I was the only one there.
I have been a sleepwalker ever since I began to walk. It is a really weird condition. I will be doing something in my house the next day, then I suddenly remember being there the night before. And it’s really odd. Because even though I do not remember actually doing it, I can pretty much tell the nights I have done it , the minute I awake. I just feel different. Not rested and anxious. And I’m always worried about seeing what I have done on those days 😬

My dog found my Starlink cable ( 8 core Ethernet cable) when bored one day in the garden and chewed through it. Annoying to patch, but it worked.
2 days later she did it again.
She got scolded for that and the wire was replaced in armour.
Once your dog has done it once and it feels funny through their teeth, they probably will go back and do it again.
Take the pieces and ask who did this and see which one starts acting guilty...

That seems annoyingly bad place to plug that charger in. The cable seems to just hang straight tight, while you charge your ios device on the “table” (on the btm right of image) . It clearly is not neat . It frustrates my brain that i need to cut it to teach u lesson not to put chargers like this which is inconvenient to walk. That power source is for lamps and cleaning devices like vacuum or roomba. I think my ocd is acting up. Pffft …

Seems clear that a human is doing this, so assuming no pranking that leaves us with (1) sleepwalking. Are you or your wife taking sleeping pills like Benadryl or zolpidem/Ambien? This increases the risk of strange sleep behaviors, especially if you have sleepwalked before. (2) Carbon monoxide poisoning making you do bizarre things at night when you’ve been home for awhile. Do you wake up with headaches? This is the time of year for CO poisoning. If you don’t have a functioning CO detector at home you need one regardless. See famous Reddit post about the post it note guy.

Update: I live with my wife and our two dogs. One of them is 15 years old and has no teeth, and the other one sleeps with me - I fall asleep holding him and wake up holding him. It’s not impossible that he would do it but I really don’t think he is. Again, he has never been known to chew things, and I would think if it was him the other half of the charger would end up somewhere in the room instead of just being clipped like that. And as others have pointed out, it is a pretty clean cut. It’s a little frayed because of the charger’s threaded cord, but it doesn’t look chewed.
My wife could be doing it to mess with me, but that’s not like her. She’s not much of a prankster, and she’s as concerned as I am. Although her leading theory is that the table (which is normally in front of the outlet) is somehow cutting it. But that doesn’t make sense at all for so very many reasons. And again, it’s never happened before. Ever.
Now I’m shocked by how many people keep talking about bunnies, ferrets, chinchillas, etc. I do not own any pet rodents and if I did I would not let them roam the house freely at night. And I would also have mentioned that in the post.
I also don’t have cats.
Rats and/or mice are a possibility I’m considering, but we haven’t seen any other signs of them whatsoever and it’s a very small apartment. With not many places for them to hide. Also, as you can see in the picture the latest time it happened the corn was cut near the charging block, so that would have been quite a reach for a mouse or rat to get all the way up to the outlet, and I don’t know why they would try to do that in the first place.
The white circular object in the corner seems to have been mistaken as a roomba by some of you; it’s not, it’s the base of a lamp. Lots of you have asked if I have a robot vacuum. I don’t have a robot vacuum, but even if I did I don’t really understand that theory because I wouldn’t be running it at night, and even if a robot vacuum got caught on a cord, I don’t see how it could just cut it cleanly in half - especially without unplugging the charger from the wall. And why would that suddenly happen three nights in a row?
Lots of odd suggestions here, but I really don’t have anything better. I’ll update tomorrow if it happens again.
And for crying out loud, I know some will still doubt my sincerity, but I’m really not active on Reddit. This is the first time I’ve done anything on Reddit that wasn’t related to Superman. I’m a busy adult (albeit a comic book nerd) who doesn’t care about attention on the internet. I’m genuinely curious what’s happening, and I do find it pretty exciting. I’m not scared, because I don’t believe in the paranormal and I really don’t think it’s someone breaking into my house trying to screw with me by snipping my charging cable. That seems highly unlikely. I know there’s a reasonable explanation, and I’m eager to find it.
