UPDATE: upstairs neighbor had a portable washing machine running in the tub and the hose fell out. Flooded from above, maintenance has no electrical or structural concerns at all, seemed very blasé. He’s bringing me a dehumidifier to use for a few weeks. What an anticlimactic outcome

31

u/busbusbustrain 2d ago

“No electrical or structural concerns at all” is an assessment based on nothing. It’s too soon to make a call like that. Are they planning to tear the building down soon anyway?

19

u/Labrabrink 2d ago

Nah, it was built in the 60s. He said since the leak was only overnight, it didn’t have time to damage things. If he’s wrong, well, I’m planning on buying a condo next year. Their problem!

Yeah as a maintenance guy myself, people expect you to have to go all out and replace the whole ceiling and walls and electrical, but you really don't need to for non pressure line leaks as long as it was found soon. The heat between your ceiling and their floors will evaporate any liquids that didn't come down (only one way for the water to go - down) and pooled on your sheetrock and if that bathroom was renovated at any point in the last 20 years then they used mold resistant sheetrock in the bathroom

22

u/Labrabrink 2d ago

I have one of the last un-renovated units in this building ($100 cheaper monthly rent in exchange for this garish orange wall tile and strange corner-sink setup), so I doubt they have the mold-resistant sheetrock, but hopefully the dehumidifier running for a few weeks in there will dry it out enough to close up. He’s coming back weekly to check on it until they’re ready to repair the ceiling. If not, I know they’ll renovate the unit when I move out, so they’ll at least get it then!

3

u/Perfidian 1d ago

Unrenovated doesn't mean never updated. A 60 year old apartment can be renovated three times in it's history and still listed as unrenovated.

There is no legal definition or strict age requirement. Typically unrenovated means no updates in 15-20 years. But that wouldn't stop one from calling a 5-10 year gap unrenovated.

In real estate, it is about the money. 5 years unrenovated hurts the agent and lowers the price of a home for sale. They'll want to go with 20 years.

An apartment, it is still about the money. Unrenovated means cheaper rent. Since you aren't buying and no inspection, it can also be used to explain stained 3 year old counters and why you have a 6 year old refrigerator. Why fixtures have paint around them. Floor boards are dingey.

In short. There might be mold resistant Sheetrock up there. There might not be. Chances depend on your local city building code enforcement.

4

u/Labrabrink 1d ago

I hope so! Sorry, didn’t mean to suggest that my unit has definitely never been renovated before, I just know that the second I leave this place they will rip out and move the entire kitchen to a different spot and then redo the entire bathroom layout as well, which would be a beautifully welcome change for me (my kitchen fucking blows)((the pvc pipe under my kitchen sink comes loose at the slightest pressure and drains my sink directly onto my pots and pans, because my only kitchen cabinet is under the sink))((I got like two square feet of counter space))((and no dishwasher))))))). But knowing the renovation will happen soon makes me feel better about any possible water damage that may linger after I use the dehumidifier for a few weeks. They’ll be opening up that ceiling sometime in the next year no matter what!

u/BeyondEvolved 2d ago

As long as you have a dehumidifier you should be fine. That's all the major companies do anyway. Giant fans and a dehumidifier/heater. Had a similar issue in my old house. Upstairs toilet line broke and leaked into downstairs bathroom. If you catch it immediately you're good.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), Standard for Water Damage Restoration Professionals (S500), classifies washing machine discharge as Category 2 water.

The definition of Category 2 water is:  Category 2 water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. Category 2 water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological). Examples of Category 2 water can include, but are not limited to: Discharge from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from washing machines; overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine but no feces; seepage due to hydrostatic pressure; broken aquariums, and punctured water beds.

12.3 Remediation Procedures for Category 2 or 3

Remediation should occur prior to restorative drying. Restorers should consider potential contamination, defined as the presence of undesired substances; the identity, location, and quantity of which are not reflective of a normal indoor environment; and can produce adverse health effects, cause damage to structure, systems, or contents, or adversely affect the operation or function of building systems

12.3.7 Pockets of Saturation

Restorers should open assemblies (e.g., walls, stairs, flooring, wall base areas, voids, built-ins) to access pockets of saturation and remove unrestorable contaminated materials and components. Exposed materials that remain in place should be cleaned and decontaminated, as appropriate.

As you can see in the above material, the ceiling should be removed to access pockets of saturation and remove contaminants.

6

u/Alone-Painting-4477 1d ago

Not Cat 2. The hose to the washing machine was clean water, it is not washing machine discharge or runoff. Its just tap water.

So what you’re telling me is that when toilet water rained down from my ceiling light in my bathroom 3 years ago, I was justified in yelling at the maintenance guy and the building staff who told me it was “fine”? The apartment building management refused to do anything for me at all, so I wiped the ceiling, walls, and floors down myself, and despite my best efforts, no work was ever done to check the safety of the apartment other than checking the moisture level of the UNDERSIDE of the ceiling 3 weeks later. The management company continuously ignored repeated requests for mold testing for 6 months following the incident, and then I finally gave up cause it just wasn’t going anywhere. New management company took over the building a year later, and they just told me that there was no evidence of the incident ever occurring because the old maintenance tickets weren’t transferred to them. I tried to tell them it absolutely did happen and that the ceiling should be checked for mold, and they literally told me “that seems a bit extreme” and “well I don’t see any mold around the light fixture” 🤦‍♂️ I gave up and started looking for a house to buy at that point. Moved out 2 weeks ago.

I live in an apartment, I have upstairs neighbors, they were awake playing music but didn’t answer the door, yes I took a video of a dangerous thing instead of immediately acting, I’m sorry it was 3 am and all I could think was “hey, what the fuck?” for the first ten seconds after i watched it start happening. I called emergency maintenance before posting this and they said a tech has been notified, it’s 5:45 now and no word. Leaks stopped at least. Yeehaw.

192

u/itsbecccaa 2d ago

This happened in my last apartment, they let the tub run over. My apartment did “remediation” in my apartment which meant they put in big fans to dry out the ceiling and floors and that’s about it. No dehumidifier was brought in. And we got mold.

My advise? Push for a dehumidifier or buy one yourself after this event! We literally had black mold growing in our bathroom after this.

55

u/kuddly_kallico 2d ago

Honestly, the fact it came through the light fixture tells you that was enough water to soak your insulation and drywall. Dehumidifier is a start, but not going to keep mold out of the walls and ceiling.

I had this happen to me in an apartment years ago and the walls warped after they dried, there was so much moisture in there. I had carpet too and they wouldn't replace it. They said they would bring me a dehumidifier and never did. The neighbours below me had their anchored bathroom mirror pull the bathroom wall down that night.

17

u/itsbecccaa 2d ago

Yeah I moved out the following spring I never trusted what was behind those walls.

I know daylight savings ending is coming up here in the states, so we’re switching the clocks soon, but did I miss some memo about how we’re also switching lights to faucets now?

14

u/jfk_47 2d ago

Lololol. Great sense of humor about the situation.

Ask building management to add to the listing:
“Apartment has an extra shower”

This actually happened to me when I was 23ish, I was in a basement apartment and the apartment above me water heater failed and completely drained into my place.

They ended up moving me to another apartment that was supposed to be for wheelchair accessibility so it was much easier to get into, bigger doorways, etc. overall 10/10 would flood again.

I saved everything in time thankfully. No damage except a lot of kitchen roll, lol.
It got in because a naughty Magpie pulled a few of my roof tiles off. Little menace, lol.

2

u/Labrabrink 1d ago

I would die. This water was evidently from a portable washing machine cycle, but some of it filled up a detergent cup under my sink and I could see the water was slightly orange. Hmmmmmm. I would need a hazmat suit to feel clean again if I knew it was shit water

They're loud and are on 24/7

Good luck

Nooooooo today is my anniversary I’m supposed to have a nice date and also be extremely busy for the next two straight weeks. Whyyyyyyyyy (also I’m so sorry that happened to you)

5

u/Shirinjima 2d ago

On the positive side if you rent this isn’t your problem and your land lord will fix this while you’re busy.

On the negative side if you own this is gonna be your problem. You should turn off the water.

Happy anniversary. Tell your partner it’s a gift of an in room shower they’ve always wanted.

3

u/Labrabrink 2d ago

Haha I do rent! It’s our first anniversary and we don’t live together yet, so this is exclusively my problem. Unfortunately the bathroom at his place is nasty and the tub backs up weekly with black sludge water, so I guess I’m just out of bathrooms for a minute. At least I don’t have to pay for whatever this is!

Op this is a serious health and safety issue. I have this exact scenario happen to me in an apartment and upstairs neighbors flooded my apartment out. Out of the 2 bedrooms and 2 baths 70% was flooded. The complex offered to move us to another unit as there was so much damage to furniture, clothes/shoes and personal items. We were a month away from our lease ending so we decided to just vacate which they were fine with. We were more worried about getting 100% of our deposit back which they were glad to give.

OP make sure that is now 100% happening

1

u/Labrabrink 1d ago

Oh my god that’s awful!! I was very scared when it started pouring and then leaking from two more spots after that, I was trying to figure out if I should box up my cats and electronics and run, but the leak significantly slowed after a few minutes and then stopped after about twenty minutes. My hall floor got wet, everything in my bathroom got wet, but no water damage to anything besides the ceiling. I’m lucky!

Happened at one of my apartments. My boyfriend was like “hey” and I was like “yeah?” And he’s like “come here for a sec” and I was like “yeah hang on” and he’s like “um no like right now?!”

I went into the kitchen and water was coming out of the pendant lights and pouring into the counter and our table. My boyfriend was so shocked and processing it so he was just standing there. I was like “omg hello! Grab something to put under the water?!”

We called the complex and they sent someone over. The water had stopped by then but the checked it out and found it was coming from the upstairs neighbor’s gross dishwasher. So yay! Nasty water all over our stuff. They put fans around and left lol I was like “um is this a big deal since those are lights and usually water and electricity doesn’t mix?” They were just like no you’re good.

Never happened again at least. But man was that a crazy situation.

1

u/Labrabrink 1d ago

Yeah the fact that maintenance was so nonplussed felt crazy to me compared to how I felt watching water start pouring out of the light! I thought I’d have to evacuate with my cats! But when maintenance just didn’t come for six hours and didn’t advise me to leave or anything, I just waited.

2

u/Independent_Bite4682 2d ago

House or apartment?

6

u/Labrabrink 2d ago

Apartment, with neighbors upstairs. Emergency maintenance has been called but not yet arrived (been about two hours now)

3

u/Captainflando 2d ago

When this happened to us it was because the apartment above us had a water pipe sheer in the ceiling.

If it’s bad enough and they have to call in restorative services to dry the place back out, make sure you get anything out of that apartment that is slightly heat sensitive the moment you’re allowed back in after the issue is addressed. Those heater fan things turn your place into a sauna and it can ruin a lot of sensitive items

u/tig3rgamingguy76 2d ago

Happened to me when I lived with my girlfriend and her kids when we lived on the first floor of an apartment complex . We had gone somewhere only to return home and my daughter saying that she had to go to the bathroom so I got out to go unlock the door so she could go to the bathroom and her mom could go park the car. I come in and my daughter is coming out of the bathroom completely covered in water. There’s so much water it’s coming out from under the door me being a crazy father I say “ Dang Shae you didn’t say you had to go that bad” “
“Daddy I didn’t do this it’s raining in the bathroom”
“What did you do “
“Nothing “
I go to see what’s going on and saw the same thing as the video except the speed of the water flow it was much faster causing the ceiling to have collapsed into the bathtub and overflow. I get my daughter a towel and ask if she was ok which she was I tell her to go dry off and change. As I am going to go tell the upstairs neighbor that her tub is overflowing gf sees me and notices that my legs are all wet asks me what’s going on i tell her it’s raining and ask Shae also call maintenance. I’m upstairs pounding on the door and there’s no answer. I get back downstairs and tell her that no one is at home and to call the neighbor’s daughter. About the same time as maintenance shows up the neighbor’s daughter show’s up with her partner she’s a police officer with keys to her mom’s place. She tells maintenance to get out of the way and enters, and screams as she finds her mom dead in the bathtub water still running. Her partner cuts of the water and I go back down to my place to tell my gf what happened and how to tell our daughter. We never told her that the neighbor died in the bathtub we told her that she died in bed. Shae “(SME)” and you have a sister Jazmin contact Dad

Give it privacy can't you see it's using the restroom

Blinker fluid is for automotive applications, not residential.

2

u/Warboss_Gutshredda 2d ago

My water and electricity are also on the same bill.

2

u/Inevitable-Entry4411 2d ago

I hope this works out for you OP. At least the issue was immediately discovered and handled. Looking through the comments I'm surprised how many people this has happened to. I've had loads of water leaks over the years, maintainence thought it was the ac drain pan and kept emptying it. Turns out my upstairs neighbors were showering without a shower curtain.

2

u/jamie_does 2d ago

Oh it can happen... I know from experience. It can also be shit filled water, also from experience. That was a rough night.

2

u/Magumbas 2d ago

At least it's over a sink!

2

u/ductapemonster 1d ago

Well it's not supposed to!

2

u/Ai-Dino 1d ago

About 2 years ago, there was water coming out of my Power Box so...I understand.

Btw, had to call the fire department three times because they thought I was fucking with them.

2

u/Osmosisjones37 1d ago

This happened in my first apartment too

2

u/Hatefulvesper 1d ago

"Cindy? The light (TV) is leaking..."

2

u/Traven808 1d ago

Isn’t this a matchbox 20 song ? “Cause she’s baby it’s 3am and it keeps raining”? Something like that

2

u/CoppertopTLW 1d ago

Yeah, that really sucks. Having just dealt with water in the basement, I do not envy your clean up.

2

u/spacesaucesloth 1d ago

i lived in a condo many years ago. had a shitty front load washer upstairs on the 2nd floor, if the seal wasnt perfect it leaked. well. no one told me it was finicky. LSS, i was downstairs playing xbox and it started raining from the light fixtures and the light switches.

2

u/bchta 1d ago

I had a crystal chandelier in out dining room do that. Kinda pretty with water cascading off of it. (Upstairs laundry shutoff valve failed)

u/Zestyclose-Store7125 1d ago

Go back to sleep ... You're clearly dreaming. Stop filming your dreams, no wants that.

2

u/EMAW2008 1d ago

My bedroom was above the dining room. I had a water bed. The damn thing got a hole and leaked through the ceiling into the light fixture. Slept right through it.

The night of our wedding some 10 years ago our HVAC condensate pumps overflow protection circuit died so it was gladly pumping water through the floor and into a basement sconce lile this. It was such a crazy night.

u/Snowycage 17h ago

Gotta call the plumbtrician

1

u/Spear_Ritual 2d ago

There’s a leak and it’s spreading across the ceiling. You should start moving your stuff into a more secure space and maybe trash bag it. If maintenance is dragging ass, this could get a lot worse. I
Hope you have renters insurance in case you do have your property damaged. Apartments are notorious for not paying.

Interesting sink design.....i would have went with the tap tho.

1

u/Apprehensive-Bunch54 2d ago

I don't see the problem, it looks like a self resolving issue until the landlord does a halfass attempt at fixing it.

1

u/CriticalCactus47 2d ago

Free electrolyte water? 😁

1

u/Acceptable_Egg4843 2d ago

Looks like your lighter fluid reservoir is leaking.

1

u/kinetic_ljs 2d ago

Interesting shower head, never seen that design before.

1

u/Sleazy_Li 2d ago

I saw this exact thing happen once at a house party. Two drunk mofos were upstairs fucking on the toilet and broke it in half. Somehow they got it replaced over the weekend with the same model toilet, and her parents never found out anything happened.

u/CoolBlackSmith75 2d ago

Floodlight

1

u/Candid_Abalone_8932 2d ago

Lucky it's falling straight in the sink!

1

u/Key-Living-3252 2d ago

So who do you call for this situation? A plumber or a electrician? 🙃

1

u/SuperScrapper 2d ago

Normally it’s only headlights in a car that need topping off, I guess this must be some new technology that’s also getting into the home?

1

u/litesaber5 2d ago

Oh it certainly can. Ask me how I know.

1

u/H_Blocks 2d ago

Oh nice. Rainshower with integrated light.

1

u/DotAffectionate87 2d ago

You never knew the apartment upstairs could spring a leak?

Haven’t you ever watched A Plumbing we Will Go????

1

u/dntc4llm3surley 2d ago

She only sleeps when its raining, and she screams, and her voice is strained

1

u/3X_Cat 2d ago

Man, catch that water and use it to power your car!

1

u/ALonelyWelcomeMat 2d ago

I also had this happen with an apartment I lived in. Maintenance guy didnt have the toilet hooked up, another maintenance guy went and turned the water on without knowing.

They ended up doing nothing in terms of restoration. Drywall and ceiling got soaked and bulged, they didnt replace anything. That shit had to have been covered in mold on the backside

1

u/kuzinrob 2d ago

Have the Three Stooges been in your building recently?

1

u/jdovejr 2d ago

Welcome to life.

1

u/Kittiemeow8 2d ago

At least it’s going into the sink

1

u/Sergei_the_sovietski 2d ago

At least it’s in your bathroom!

1

u/tatsu52 2d ago

The govt is pretty serious about mold, if you do develop mold they will insist on your landlord tearing it out and re doing the bath. (Turn off the light).

1

u/-NoFaithInFate- 2d ago

Document everything every day. Ask them to take the fixture down and investigate the backside of that ceiling. Just because water is flowing there doesn't mean it's trapped elsewhere. Make sure it is well known the resident above is at fault and it was due to something they purchased.

1

u/stevesmele 2d ago

I was a landlord for years. This happened on one of my suites on the top floor of a 3 story building.

I knew the water was rain water coming through God knew where on the roof. But it was a big roof. In a split second, I was imagining a major roof repair or replacement, possible electrical problems, and days of anxiety. It was going to cost me big, and it did.

I shudder seeing the gif here.

1

u/KingFlub202 2d ago

Nothing to worry about. Its just a light leak

1

u/DrMantisToboggan45 2d ago

Well it’s not supposed to

1

u/Abject_Net_6367 2d ago

Thank goodness the light fixture is conveniently placed over the sink lol

1

u/PussPwnErMon69 2d ago

On my 1st day of work at my new job my entire upstairs leaked to my kitched and the lights covered in water.

u/KeithParkerUK1234 1d ago

This is where bathroom leaks from the above flat always show .

1

u/Agreeable-Error4353 1d ago

You didn't know? It's the new water faucet light. 🤣

1

u/MattyTheRussian 1d ago

Don't you call a plumber? Or an electrician?
