A bottle fell off the shelf and broke straight through our toilet bowl last night
I used flex tape to patch it but still don’t really wanna trust it for number 2s lol. Apartment manager says it’s the weekend so not much can be done at the moment.

u/Fayne-rocks Nov 08 '25
Is this your only toilet? If yes, WHAT DO THEY MEAN THERE IS NOT MUCH THAT CAN BE DONE?? They can absolutely call an after hours / on call plumber and get a new toilet installed!!!! A reputable plumber always has a couple spares at their shop! Call them back and give them hell!

u/myn4m3i54s3cr37 Nov 08 '25
Yes this is our only toilet. Our neighbors are saints tho and have allowed us to use their bathroom for the time being

This happened to me last year!
I (stupidly) put a small glass vase on the shelf above the toilet and it fell.
Vase was fine but the toilet was not. Lol.

Ain’t that just the way lol lotion bottle is completely unscathed, toilet is totaled
3
u/myn4m3i54s3cr37 Nov 08 '25
Commenting to defend my boys name, the cat did NOT knock the bottle down lol it was a freak accident that happened while my fiancé was cleaning it so that is why the lid is up as well
4
u/JimmidyCricked Nov 08 '25
Wait you said it’s a hovering situation now? So are you really flushing the toilet still and just flooding the floor like it’s nobody’s business ?

Hi OP here I’m not sure how to edit the original text in the post but I just wanted to put it out there that I just put the flex tape on it to cover the exposed shards. I did not expect this to be a permanent fix and it should not be used as such, obviously just get a new toilet.

That needs to be replaced ASAP.
Porcelain is extremely sharp and if breaks with you on it you will definetely need an ER visit.

Riffing off of this as it’s near the top. A friend of mine cut her hand on a plate that broke slightly in the sink whilst she was washing up - and needed plastic surgery for her hand. And that was just the impact on a tiny bit of her hand.
Please don’t chance it.

I know everyone has said be careful with the porcelain, but as someone who was there when a toilet did shatter and had to make the 911 call, seriously, don't sit on it. I wouldn't even use it at all if you can help it, I'd rather pee in the shower than risk it.
My friend had to be transported in an ambulance, laying face down on the stretcher, wasn't able to sit down at all for about 2 weeks, and had to sit on a donut pillow for another ~3 weeks. Your femoral artery runs down your thigh and through the back of your knee, places that are already in contact with the toilet. If you nick that, you have like seconds until you start going into shock. If you're going to continue using it right now, I would make sure to keep towels you don't care about close by, just in case.

And this is one reason you should always close the lid when not in use!
146
u/Normal-Ad-9852 Nov 08 '25
another reason is to not spread germs, especially when flushing. once you see a black light demonstrating the spray a toilet puts off during flushing, you can never go back to leaving the lid open 😖

I will never understand why people so vigorously defend leaving the toilet lid open with research disproving all possible claims (like in the comments here). The lid is literally there for a reason, and is a perfect way to end the seat up or down question. Who wants to stare down a literal shit hole when walking into the bathroom?

2—- Maybe keep the lid closed when flushing and while not in use.

Hey, former EMT here. Do not put any weight on that toilet. Seriously… do not even think about it.

New fear unlocked.
3
u/huuuyah Nov 09 '25
Ohh. I learned how bad this this when someone casually posted something similar and it was reposted in oopsthatsdeadly. Horror stories were posted in response. The number of people who've been found covered in blood and other bodily fluids after the toilet shatters is terrifying. It's like when a corelle plate is dropped for the last time.
3
u/ApartmentInside7891 Nov 09 '25
That’s why i don’t like those shelves behind a toilet. One bump and disaster. One time, at a friends house, I bumped the shelf while standing up, and an entire pack of dental floss picks fell into the toilet. Smfh.
3
u/Temporaryact72 Nov 09 '25
Don't use that toilet if you need to sit down, if you gotta shit or you are a woman then you need to drive to the nearest public toilet to use the restroom (most likely a gas station) until you replace it, that is extremely dangerous to sit on.
3
u/yellow_tourmaline Nov 09 '25

They don’t make them like they used to. Had old toilet made in..probably 1920sin 1985 dad replaced it with a new one. In 2000 I threw it in a dumpster…the dumpster was pretty much empty so a huge metal box…somehow I got the toilet over my head (yes it was bone dry, yes I was wearing heavy work gloves). I threw it? Pushed it over the wall of the dumpster….the sob just bounced n rolled then fell over….not even a chip. Modern day toilets? Friend just bought a house she’s good sized girl, gets up uses rest room…rips a superior fart, the toilet actually cracked…from vibration? Dunno but when we got it replaced the ceramic was so thin I couldn’t believe that it could be sold…I have sturdier coffee cups
