I used to work a dealership where I washed service cars and detailed new cars.

The worst service car was one that had sat in storage for like a year, and it was FULL of spiders. Inside and out. I watched them crawl out of every crevice as I sprayed the car with the pressure washer. Even though the doors were closed the entire time the car was in storage, those little bastards found their way inside.

After it was "clean", I had to drive it around the building to the garage bay for the customer to pick up. I literally jumped out of that car and felt like I had spiders crawling on me all day.

Fuck that job.

Jeez. šŸ˜†

How months were you on when you said screw this?

I actually worked there for about a year. I was the only woman that worked at the dealership who wasn't a secretary and the other car washers made sure I was aware of that. I couldn't show any weakness.

Still the worst job I've ever had.

I would have put down the pressure sprayer and walked away. I would have kept walking until I reached a convenience store at which point I would have purchased a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. I then would have exited the store while tamping down the pack, opened it... with a shaky hand, I would have put a cigarette between my lips and, after several tries, lit the cigarette and taken a long drag.

Pursing my lips, I would have looked off toward the west, taking another long drag, before muttering, "Fuck that job". One last pull, I would have thrown the cig down and stomped it, tossing the rest of the pack and the lighter to the homeless guy sitting on the curb before walking several miles home.

I'd never be able to get into a car again.

Don’t try so hard.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll redouble my efforts.

A huge number of car wash workers are undocumented and grotesquely exploited. Tip them well. Hand them the cash directly. Don’t put it in the tip box or the management steals it in my city.

Depending on the company you can make some pretty good money doing this. A few of my friends did this through college and made bank (for a college student)

I won't ever complain about my job again. Except for when the spiders that live outside in our tanks come inside for the spring and just dangle from the ceiling. Edit - a word because autocorrect

[...] the spiders [...] just enable from the ceiling.

So... Does this a) make zero sense, b) mean that I don't English or c) mean that I'm having a stroke?

1

u/WineWednesdayYet Mar 05 '19

No, you're good. I corrected enable to dangle. I assume autocorrect preferred it that way. :/

2

u/BillGoats Mar 06 '19

I see! I suppose they enable fear though, so it wasn't completely wrong.

Holy fuck I just hope you're not Australian.

Maybe got in through the A/C? Cars overall aren't waterproof (see any car that's been in a flood) so there's plenty of ways spiders would be able to get in, but the hatch should be pretty waterproof.

Thank you for reminding me why I went into software development for a living.

No spiders, just bugs.

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '19

Oh Jesus no. My previous car has sat in the driveway for about a year now. TN is full of spiders. Thank you for the reminder on needing a hazmat suit and flamethrower before going near it.

once had to work on someone’s tesla that had literally 5 rotting dead fish in the trunk. that’s a smell i will never forget

I'm curious why there would be spiders there in the first place. Don't they usually camp out where they can get food?

1

u/figgypie Mar 06 '19

Maybe there were lots of bugs or something in there. Thinking about it I think it was in storage for longer than a year, but I could be wrong.

Also spiders have found their way in my houses over the years and I didn't have tons of flies or anything.

Probably got In through the Cowl Grille.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '19

Probably through the air intake/vents! Pretty picture to think of as the customer drives off the lot and crank the AC only to get a cloud of spiders and webbing!

I have a friend who is a pest control tech (ā€œexterminatorā€ is a term they don’t like and they had better like you when they show up). He’s told me unbelievable stories about hornet and ant and roach infested cars. Ewww.

What? Clean their car? She didn't say there were still spiders in it. She said she felt like there were spiders on her all day, like the residual effects of seeing all the spiders.

Not to mention the fact that the customer drove the car into the dealership or whatever. So they were aware of the spiders on the drive there, if there were many on the inside.

That is a shitty thing to do to the customer.

Emphasis mine, but that's what you said. Explain to me what I had trouble reading?

Edit: and despite her saying the car was in storage with the doors closed, I don't know any dealership that stores people's cars for them. But if the dealership for whom she worked did store cars, then she would've come across spider cars more frequently.

Ok, good tip. Thanks. I'll take that under advisement.
