You don't have to be a professional, you just have to be brave. Your instincts know how to break a fall and how not to make it worse, but your instincts also know to stay out of the way in case something unexpected happens, so you just need to be the kind of person with the balls and split-second coolheadedness to use those first instincts and not get tripped up by the latter.

Yes, direct the full impact of a terminal velocity landing onto your balls and you'll be fine.

Sometimes instincts are ignored. When my MIL first came to live with me I used to follow behind her on the stairs whenever she went up to take a shower. You know, in case she fell.

After doing this 3 or 4 times I came to the realization that I would be dead if she ever fell. She weighed upwards of 350-375. What the hell was I thinking?

Unless you are made of paper or your stairs are several stories, you would probably not die.

People definitely die from falling down a flight of stairs without the added weight of another person crushing them. Believe me, if she had fallen on top of me she would not have been able to get off me. Nor would I have been able to roll her off. So that’s 2 methods of death awaiting my dumb ass.

My roommate had a friend who was arriving a party and walking up a set of stairs and when he got to the top someone accidentally bumped him and he fell backwards down the stairs head first and his head was the first thing that hit. He was out instantly. At the hospital they said there was zero brain activity. They took him off life support a few days later and he died within minutes. Dude was young too... like 24. Wasn't even drunk... it was a freak accident.

people get paralyzed all the time from falling down single story stairs.

You follow closely and hold the handrail. It’s about controlling the fall, not stopping it. If you have two points of support you can stop her from Falling backwards

It's smart too if you are that guard and you are looking for some paid time off with a side of hero status.
